Default Getting hammered....

Just wanted to share with those who haven't seen this little test yet.
It's kinda nice, if it's not fake.

With a thread title like this I am sure Kevin will show up... hes taking a Bachelors degree in getting hammered with a second major in slacking

Yeh its a nice review and all.... but really, this is like seeing the pre-sneak peaks of the athlon. No one will know what it will really do till it really ships.

Ye... it's nothing but a sneak peak.
And they're only running Q3, wich really benefits from the hammers on-chip mem-controller.
But it's nice to see that it's up and running after all

We'll also have to wait for the custom MS Windows for it...

it should be there tho, it is being made. and regular windows should still run on it, just in 32 bit mode instead

Maybe so but I'm talking about the version that AMD got Microsoft to agree to make, that has the set of instructions specific to the AMD chip.

32 bit or 64 bit... the hammer was made to bring down the house on 32 bit apps.. however they added in the 64 bit capability... or am i wrong and its designed around 64 bit apps but is capable of rocking the house with 32 bit apps aswell? hmm..?

Jason:

YOur not wrong. From everything I have read thus far on 64bit processing and Hammer, Hammer is designed by nature to run 32bit apps extreamly well (unlike the original PPros). AMD decided that 64bit processing was in the near future but knew that it would take time to move everything over to it. SO they designed their chips to have 64bit processing as an EXTENSION of the 32bit processing. Quite interesting approach, if you ask me.

Intel went the other way and decided to make the Itianium, which is a 64bit ONLY CPU and made to extreme processing only. (ie. Scientific calculations).

In short, Hammer will run exsisting Windows better if not as well as exsisting Athlons. You do NOT need to upgrade to a 64bit version of WInXP just to take advantage of Hammers abilities. EVENTUALLY when a good version of WInXP 64bit comes out then Hammer will be ready for it.

Till then, fear not! Hammer will crush all opposition.......

Hammer is 64 bit, but still runs all legacy software. IE: anything written for the x86 platform will still work with the hammer.

Intel, like you said, went the other route, getting away from the x86 architecture, and making a completly new processor, for 64bit applications. The only problem is, you have to design completly new software for it, as it is not compatible with x86 32bit applications. Which is both the single largest drawback, and single largest advantage of the Itanium.

Basically, Hammer takes a step forward, but is still backwards compatible (like Windows), but Itanium takes a leap, and hopes everyone can jump that far.
