what's a good hdd?

I'm just getting my new system working, but I still have this old 2 gig hard drive holding me back. What do you guys think for a good replacement? I don't need lots of capacity, I pretty much just want it to be fast, 40 gigs is plenty for now. I also don't really want to spend money for scsi stuff, so just tell me what you think. I also want to say, if you need a new video card, I think the gf4 ti4200 is the best for it's price, 200 bucks less than the ti4600 and hardly any slower. anway, just so you know.

...and it overclocks rather nicely too!

I prefer Seagate, IBM and Maxtor, in that order for HDDs.

I just swapped a 3G for a 20G Maxtor, but I decided to get a PCI IDE controller. It was either that (which allows me to run the drive at ATA100), or do the software thing.

Good HDD? Take your pick.....Maxtor, Seagate, IBM, Fujitsu (yes, you read that right

I personally have had great success with the IBM Deskstars. If you are only going to run your system for a day and turn it off at night, go for the 120GXP. They are truely wonderful for speed. If you plan on 24/7 operation, go for the 60GXP. (120GXP arn't designed for 24/7 operation, that's all) Fujitsus are a good buy too; run almost completely silent, and fast transfers too.

STAY AWAY FROM SAMSUNG HDDs. I have seen these fail all too often.

Maxtors have good return policies; that I know for sure

Seagates are good and have a decient return policy

If you are interested, just found a 40GB IBM 120GXP HDD at NEWEGG.COM for $71. Not a bad buy.

I have a Seagate Barracuda IV and love it. It is, to my knowledge, the quietest 7200 rpm drive on the market now. It's a performer, too. The new Western Digital drives w/ 8mb of cache are sweeeeet as well

I like the Cuda ATA IV. It's just so quiet and has great performance. The IBM stuff has been unreliable in 7200rpm speeds, so I wouldn't touch it. Maxtor has just never appealled to me (dunno why). WD rocks with their 8mb cache drives, but of course those are only available in 80gb, 100gb, 120gb sizes.

maxtor. all the way.
after IBM royally screwing a lot of people over with their 75gxp series hdds (including me) i went to staples after the drive failed the 2nd time and got a 30gb maxtor. i had bought a 40gb maxtor after the 30 filled up (w00t for porn....) now i recently bought a 120gb maxtor from frys and i think ill never have to worry about hd space again.

Well, Now that Maxtor and Quantum have merged.... Maxtors seem to be doing really well. (I really like the Quantum SCSI lines)

I been running one of these WD 8Mb drives (120GB) for a bout 4 days now, and yeah, it flies!

But i cant seem to find any software that will allow me to monitor the drive temp using athe on board sensor i thought the new WDs came with. - anyone know of an app that will give me the real time temp of the drive? Its becuase i want to put it into a SilentDrive enclosure and am worried about the drive getting too hot. just want to monitor it.

I tried a few apps off the web like HDD Temperature, but it says it cannot find any supported drives (!!?? - though WDs had SMARTS and all that jazz).

Tried WDs own tools, but came up with some shite DOS utility to create a disk, only works on 9x and ive got 2K. And i didnt want to create a bootable disk. - just a windows app that gives drive temp.

Anyone have anything they use and like for this??

hey i use something called ActiveSMART. it seems to work pretty good. you just go into the "SMART info" tab and a few lines down is a temperature attribute.

funny, this is one of the apps i tried, v2.12, but when i look down the SMART info tab, i cant see anythign on temperature. What is it called exactly.

Are there additonal plugins for this app to get more info fro mthe drive. or you think this (brand new bells and whistles) WD drive doesnt have temp capability? Find it hard to believe. Even WD site mentions its top performance IDE drives having temp monitoring on them. This is top of the range!

hey i forgot to say that you have to click the checkbox next to temperature and restart the program or your computer. im not sure which. it always helps to look at the read me.

these WD drives with the 8mb cache seems pretty sweeet, plus I should get a fat paycheck this month, so I might get one. an 80 gb runs about 120 on newegg.com, think that's a fair price?

I read the readme.

But the prob was that with this new WD drive, that attribute doesnt exist! So i didnt even see it to check and restart app.

i guess the drive doesnt have an onbaord temp sensor. That's pretty lame for a top-of-the-line drive i think.
