A few months back when I was putting together a dual athlon water cooled system :-) I had some swiftech blocks and I ran some purple ice through them.... here is the thread

By clear i didn;t mean no build up I mean not blocked.

Most domestic water systems have a load of crap on the insides of the pipes, however max efficiency isn't an issue for them as they aren't cooling a computer. Definitely go with distilled water.

wow... were you using distilled water?

now the black coating was simply because of the purple ice. but that sucks about the copper build up.
hrmm... now im thinking again... is the black BAD or is it GOOD. is it an anticorrosion coating... or is it gonna kill a system

and how much copper buildup was there? i cant see any

****update on the test****

i didnt take any pics cause of lack of time but....
any of the aluminum that was pitting is now starting to have its pits covered in the black coating... which is stopping the bubbles from forming there... and therfore stopping any more corrosion in the pits...

that's what i think the intent is, cover the Al with some oxide. What I want to know though is how good/bad is the thermal conductivity of this coating is

well danger den was cool enough to hook me up with some scrap pieces of copper and aluminum... how much i dont know yet... but that will still give me real life water block metal to test with... package comes next wed along with me ehiem to do the bix testing!!!!

Nothing has happened to the foil yet, but the alu HS is experiencing some rather strange things! The edge of the anodizing (where it "fades" over to the bare metal where I sanded it) is covered with some strange white... um... thingie. THere's nothing on the full anodizing or on the bare metal though, and nothing on the copper.

Just took out all the metals out of the jar and inspected them closer, the foil has been pitted quite a bit (it looks all dotted) but nothing has happened to the copper, the alu heatsink is veeery vaguely red-toned (can be scraped off but is fingernail resistant), and the white stuff on the anodizing is actually quite resistant against sanding, so it's on there pretty hard.

alright... well dangerden has sent me some copper and aluminum to test out, not sure how much, but now i KNOW that these metals will be real life water cooling metals...
they should get here tuesday or wednesday... so that means a retest

What you need to do before the metals arrive is state your point of reference and how you intend to run the test.

This way others can either try the same test for accuracy, or try other tests showing different situations.

Let everyone here know how you intend to run the test, either with pumps or none, what metals in what combination in which solutions, concentrations and the like.

imho you should try normal tap water, distilled water, then distilled + WW and distilled + PI

and have the ww and pi in their recommended concentrations, simply cause thats what most people will be doing

I'll be the lab rat this time. I got a gallon of coolant i mixed up and only 1/2 of it used. It consists of about %70 Distilled waster and %30 Prestone ethylene glycol antifreeze. i got a piece of copper flat bar and a big all alluminum non - anodized PII heatsink. I'll put these in the coolant for a week or so and see what i get. I have been running this coolant in my system for 2 days now and see no problems, my system is all copper by the way.

your mixture is not what we have been doing. the glycol is more for low temps... not designed to stop corrosion... the redline and purpleice are more of an additive.. not a large part of the mixture... BUT im sure you all know this... and i wanna see what the corrosion results are with this... hrmmm =)

oh.. the distilled water is still showing no signs of corrosion... but there is a decent ammount on a straight tap mixture i made about 3 days into the test.. lots of white furry stuff on the aluminum
