Most accurate way to measure socket 754 CPU temps?

Hello everyone!

I'd like to get some sort of a probe measuring my CPU temperatures once I get my watercooling installed. Right now I have the probe lying flat ontop of the CPU fixed between the CPU and the HSF. It's reporting temps from 42 idle and 58 full load on my stock AMD HSF. Now I realize the HSF isn't making perfect contact because of the probe, but I was wondering which is the best way to measure temperatues on a 754 CPU with watercooling installed on it. I'm not only looking to make relative comparisons, but I'd also like to see actual CPU temperatures as accurate as I can!

Wait, you have the probe between the core and the heatsink???

The best way I know is to just use the onboard sensor, they are fairly precise (notice I say precise, not accurate.)

My Abit mobo reads my CPU temperatures over 50 degrees celsius wrong. I'm not kidding, it idles at 91 and has a full load reading of 118 degrees CELSIUS. I won't bother flashing a new bios as i'll get the DFI when i get my WC gear.

btw, it's an external probe that came whit my chassis!

Most accurate way would be to solder wires to the diode pins, bend then to the outside of the chip a la Greystar, and wire that to a 65xx MAX EV SYS setup. As long as you calibrate everything vs. a good thermometer in a water bath you should have reasonably accurate numbers then (with 0.125C resolution too)

Contact between heatsink and CPU needs to be flush for the CPU's heat to be transfered to the heatsink efficiently.

I realize that. But if the probe is reporting temps 41-58 degrees then i think i'm fine until i get the new temp-reading device sorted out. Don't you think? I'ts not like i could kill anything right?

I guess you have a CPU w/ IHS, which is probably saving that CPU right now. I'm also amazed that it's not dead... yet...

As silly as it sounds, the IHS spread the heat effectively enough that amd actuall recommends it for a place to put your thermocouple.

Sure, but I doubt Noldor has a groove on his heat sink for his probe... Without groove, the heat sink and IHS probably makes very little contact...
