Default Advanced computer controls

Wouldn't it be nice if we could tap into the nerve bundles at the brain stem and use them for output, simultaneously removing motor functions from the body when doing so? We could create the ultimate virtual reality.

Imagine learning how to use your virtual body and playing UT2K3 with a group of your best friends while images are being directly projected to your retinas and your voice is captured by a microphone. Of course, you'd be seeing the action in real time, feeling the environment, moving your body as you would if you were there. Imagine that first time sighting down a barrel at your closest pals only to blast their virtual self into oblivion, only for them to go through massive disorientation as they are spawned in another place.

Now that they have rats and monkeys controlling computer cursors and being remote controlled, I wonder how many years it will be before such a system is possible. Chalk this up in the "Wouldn't it be simultaneously be horrible and sweet?" column.

How would you guys react to such a system?

Heh, nice one airspirit...

I think that there would be too many dead people in the real life...
When Half Life was out, I played it several days non-stop, like play, eat cookies while play, pause for cooking more coffee and buying some cigarettes, again play, and sleep for some 8 hours. Something like three days in a row, if I remember corectly...When I finished the game, it was time to go back into the real life, but after so many quickloads, I was like almost invulnerable, mind still playing the game...I was crossing the street and was almost hitted by the car...And only thing I felt was that nerve impulse to hit F9 again...That kinda sobered my mind...

Another thing...If something like that is possible, the first thing to became commercial would be pr0n...and if one can feel the pleasure, surely that pain is next...(darn Matrix!!! )...and even if adjustable in level, imagine the next generation of viruses, that might became deadly...just to crank up the level of sensation...

What more you need, how many people died of side effects of viagra (heart conditions)?

I wouldn't be so paranoic if they wasn't following me all the time...

Sony Playstation PS/9. Coming to a store near you (in the distant future! )

This type of interface raises a number of ethical issues.

That's why I posted here, Ben. While there are issues with it, any hardcore gamer would lust for something like this. Imagine the training opportunities for military uses as well? They'd be the source of this tech, if it ever comes out, for that reason.

I think you'll first see the interface used for remote control of military vehicles. Wait 20 years.

like Puzzdre said, it would be way cool and terrible at the same time. look at how many people are "evercrack" addicts right now. heck, i was on everquest for about a year and a half. imagine after this kind of thing...

and the potential for viruses is terrible.

on the other hand, it would be soooo cool.

a LOT of science fiction/cyberpunk books have been writen with this kind of the thing in it.

the problem with this is why they dont have pilots flying fighter planes from miles away today - its really easy to jam wireless stuff. i could definatly see fighter planes being controlled directly from the brain though - instant reflexes! but by then it might just be all robots anyway.
