Question regarding SolidWorks
My friend just received SolidWorks 2001 Plus at his work, but it is having some problems. When he is constructing anything, if he moves his mouse over one of the edges of the objects he's working with, everything dissapears except for the one edge he moved over. He has to click outside of his objects for everything to show again.
Any ideas? He's using Windows XP, an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, and he just updated his display drivers. Thanks, Jonathan |

The Problem is with the video card. Solidworks does not support ATI type video cards. Even the older versions of Solidworks. You need to get your self an NVIDA Quadro4 card or even a Quadro2. I have Solidworks 2003 and I am running a Quadro4 980Xgl (about a $650-$700 card) but you can get the Quadro2 for under $100 bucks. They will work fine as long as you keep your models simple. And Waterblocks are a simple model.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to see if I can get a Quadro 2, and get that in his computer. Do they make Quadro 2's in PCI? If you have to do research, don't worry, I'm going to go and get on Google tomorrow, so I'll check it out if you don't know off the top of your head.
Thanks again, Jonathan |

even for simple models such as a waterblock, even a GeForce 2 MX class vid card works very well with Solidworks. One guy at work only uses a GeForce 256 with acceptable results. ( with the right driver, that is ) Unless you are planning on going all doing alot of modeling....I would not spend the extra money on a quatro based card.
This sounds like one of ATI's famous driver issues. Thsi card should work with Solidworks... http://www.solidworks.com/pages/serv...ardreport.html what I would o is for to the forums at www.solidmag.com or the solidworks forum on their website & see if anyone has had any success with what driver.... |

The only reason I was going to spend up to $200 for a VC, is to run SW2K3, now I have to rethink it all!
The Matrox Parhelia is starting to look good! What the heck is a Quadro4? |

A Quadro 4 or any Quadro is a variation on a GeForce, and designed specifically for CAD design, 2D apps etc.
If I remember right, you can convert a Geforce to a quadro with some simple soldering, or at least you could with the Old GeForce 2 cards. Matrox still rule this area though, and have yet to be touched in my opinion, at least without shelling out a LOT of cash for a specialist card. |

the Quadro series are pretty much the best at what they do...however, these cards tend to be pretty damn expensive. However...there is a very good option out there that I KNOW that works....SoftQuadro..

http://download.guru3d.com/rivatuner/ The Matrox is way over priced for what it can do. The card is now 1 year old & has yet to drop in price & the drivers have yet to boost much performance out of it. Back when it was introduced, the GF4 was beating it & nVidia actually improves their drivers. http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic...rhelia-30.html |

I don't seem to have much problem running SolidWorks on my ATI-based PC's.
I think some facts need checking. Bob

The SolidWorks website doesn't make a clear mention of the 9700 pro. Which card do you use? |

going through the SW Forums...
There's a user that reports installing the NVidia driver 45.31, and states that everything is fine, and that it's "already configured for SolidWorks". Nothing on ATI. |
