I used an Excel spreadsheet: it was simpler to plug various numbers!
The formulae I used multiplies 0.4085 by the flow rate (gpm), then divides it by the diameter of the tubing. The result gives the flow speed, in feet per second. |

where did the 0.4085 came out of?

Hum... let me see if I can remember!
I believe that the number comes from all the constants put together which would include the calculation of the opening area, and a conversion of the "gallon" into it's volumetric equivalent (cubic inches?). Let me think about it. |

Why do you use imperial units?

ben, this is what i can get from my equation,
if v=flow/area then v=flow/(pi*r^2) which is v=flow/(pi/4*diameter^2) which gives v=1.27*flow/diameter^2 i can't immagine how the hell did exel to get the denominatior to diameter and not to diameter squared. even me hates imperial units

even according to base units, if you get the equation the exel gave you 0.4085 * flow/diameter = velocity
left hand side: meters^3*Seconds^-1*meters^-1 = meters^2*Seconds^-1 right hand side: meters*second^-1 i think my equation at least is constante with respect to base units v=flow/area right hand side: meters^3*seconds^-1*Meters^-2=meters*Seconds^-1 Left hand side: meters*second^-1

The area would be calculated as Pi * (diameter / 2) ^2.
Now how did I calculate the rest... |

that is what i am trying to figure out also
i said that area = pi/4 * (diameter)^2 which is as yours pi*(diameter/2)^2 no??

The formulae is: 0.4085 * the flow rate, divided by the SQUARE of the diameter. That makes more sense. Ya'll give me a few more minutes to iron this out. |

Got it.
A gallon converts to cubic inches, by multiplying by 231. The flow rate is converted from gpm to in^3/second, by multiplying it by 3.85 . The result then appears in inches which, when divided by 12 (inches in a foot), gives the flow speed in feet per second. |

All the figures are converted on the spreadsheet, but the inputs (red boxes) are in imperial, yes.
Change it around: it's not hard! |
