Compressor question...... ouch its HOT!!

I just bought a mini-fridge to hack apart, but the compessor is running unbelievably hot. I can keep my hand on it for more than a few seconds.

I know that mini-fridges have "built in" condensor, hence why the top and sides are pretty warm.

Why is the compressor running that hot!?

Is it because the built in condensor is not removing the heat fast enough and its just looping back in to the compressor?

o yeah, it has only been running literaly 10 minutes. (I just got it).
is it just burning in? I don't think so. but i am i newB at phasechange. (a little)

Hmmm,put a fan on it and see if that doesnt cool it quite a bit.
BTW I dont think mini fridges work too great to cool anything.

think about the dehumidifier thing, they pull like 700 watts.. thats pretty much overkill... just something to think about... maby find a smaller one? like 300 watts or something? im not exactly sure what it should be but im guessing 300....

are you sure? 700 watts is a lot.... i know a few peeps are using them... but 1hp is is somewere between 500 and 700 watts or soemthing... most people use 1/5 or around that compressors rite???

watts rating on a humidifier means little to nothing.i can take one compressor and rate it at 500,600,700 watts .depending on the condensor and evaperator size.
a humidifier is rated with all 3 parts combined.you need to look at the hp load of the comperssor and voltage.for -40 degree temps 1/4 compresor is what you need. a 1/4 hp compressor does not mean it will run at that hp while it running.only when it needs the full load does it runn at 1/4hp.so that 1/4hp compressor only works like a 1/8 or so as the load is needed.so look for hp power ratting if you can.

That is just a wattage measurement.Just because it is 700 watts doesnt mean it is 1HP.Just draws alot of wattage since it has so much refrigerant to keep the evap temp low even with hot condenser air blowing on it.

BTW you probably want at least a 1/4HP compressor.
I use a dual staged system with a 1HP compressor and a 3/4HP.
That is just a rating though.The 1 HP was a 13,500BTU a/c unit.

Since I have a 13,500btu compressor and a 8000btu it should be 21,500btu.But in my application it isnt going to be removing that many btu's,I dont have that much refrigerant in it.So it will be removing as much btu's as I need at the lowest possible temp.So my system charged the way it is may only handle a few thousand btu....

Much better to rate by BTU's than watts the compressor takes or HP rating.

ok thanx for correcting me as i really dont know exactly what im talking about when it comes to phaze change, when someone said something about them being 700watts i asumed it was the compressor not the whole system...

Either way, heat is definately a by-product here.

I have a thermometer mounted on the front grill of my dehumidifier, to measure the exhaust air temp.

When I first fire it up, from room temp, the exhaust is in the 45-50 C (112-120 F) range. Guaranteed to be hand burning hot on the compressor by my calculations, as I've never felt the urge to touch it.

After the system has stabilized, the exhaust stays pretty constant near 37 C.

These numbers were experienced at 28C ambient.
