1100 Drive Error
Greetings,
I shut down our functioning 1100 the other day and moved it to another network. I then reset the device to factory defaults, but now, while I can access the OS, the HD light is off, and I receive the notice that there is no disk detected. I assume that the drive has failed, or is corrupted, and since I still have access to the OS, that I should be able to copy the 25MB of OS to another drive. Correct? Questions: 1. Am I to use Knoppix or DD? Is DD a part of Knoppix? 2. Are there instructions for DD? I found the ones for Knoppix on the Wiki. 3. Is there something else wrong, that I can fix without replacing the drive? My machine info from the web screen: 1000 Series Software - 4.0.855(US) Hardware - 2.02 Server# - 204270 BIOS - 4.0.855 Regards, Gary |

Re: 1100 Drive Error
DD is part of the Knoppix live cd. There is also a Live DD cd, too.
Take a look a the log and see if it tells you any thing. When you start up the 1100, allow it to run. If the disk led is on, it is probably doing data check. Once the check has completed it may take a 10-15 min to mount. Particurlarly if it is full, 90%. It's strange that you have access to the OS and not the data partition too. Unless it's doing a file check. But if the HD is failing you may have limited time to recover the OS. If you do not have the OS to reinstall it, copy 40meg. Make a copy of the OS while you know it's still booting. Then you have time to find out what is happend to the data.

Re: 1100 Drive Error
Thanks for the reply!
The disk light blinks during startup, but then goes off, and stays off. I have left the system on for hours, and still no love. I am having a hard time finding out where to find the logfiles, but I will continue to look. While I am posting, I noticed a warning about DD and NTFS primary partitions. Am I to understand that I should be using a FAT drive as a primary drive, when attaching the SNAP HD to copy the Boot data and OS? Finally, should I have to replace the drive, am I correct in assuming that with my current OS, that pretty much any size drive is supported? **EDIT** Found the log option, very simple..DOH! Re: 1100 Drive Error
You need to make attempt to read the OS. If not you will need to come up with the boot tracks. 1100's and 2200's share the same boot loader.
Snap does not use NTSF, It's a Modified XFS file system from BSD. DD uses a RAW copy to do a sector by sector copy.

Re: 1100 Drive Error
Thanks again!
Regarding the NTFS, I was commenting on this text in the WIKI: (XP: NTFS drives are mounted RO, do not attempt to mount an NTFS drive RW as problems may arise with the file system. Instead, ensure that you have a FAT partition available and use it instead.) I read this to mean the primary drive in the PC that was being used as the recipient of the data copied from the SNAP drive.(Which is attached as a slave on IDE1 or on IDE2) Since I can connect to the web interface, shouldn't the OS be functioning and accessible from DD? I am ready to copy the data, I am just wary of the XP warning stated above and in the Wiki. I have multiple drives/OS's that I can swap in one of my PC's, so using a FAT drive isn't much of an issue, but I wanted to be sure. Regards, Gary Last edited by teamgs; 04-12-2007 at 12:41 PM. |

Re: 1100 Drive Error
DD does not support writing to a NTSF, at least the ones I have used. You can mount a usb pin drive and write the boot tracks to it.
You may have one of the early 1100's that were actually something in between the 2 models. If so a quick test would be to power down and disconect the HD, power up and see if you can connect to the admin. If so just slap a new drive in and let it go. If your tring to copy the whole HD to a NTSF drive, don't recomend it with dd. If you have true image use it. Must use the RAW copy function, which normaly means it must goes back to the same size. and the size is = to what you are copying, not compression and copies unused space. If you have a replacement HD, use dd to copy it to your new drive. When you boot it it will show your original drive size. To correct the size, you must reformat the HD, so backup to a outside source.

Re: 1100 Drive Error
Thanks!
I don't care about the data on the drive, as it was used to store backup data from a server that is no longer in service. I just want a functioning one from here on out. I would only be copying the OS and boot info. I will test the type of SNAP I have by the method you suggested, and post back with the result. I also can swap in an HD in one of my PC's with W98, so DD shouldn't have any issues. **EDIT** If I disconnect the HD, the system light comes on and the HD light flashes once, but no link and network light, and no connection to the admin. So it must have all the info on the HD. BTW, heat may have been a factor, as it was very hot inside the case, and the cooling fan had failed. Re: 1100 Drive Error
The 1100 fan is temp controlled. The one I have started at 155F and off at 110.
Copy the boot track while you can. If you can get 40 meg, you should the help files too. It is always recomended to reinstall the OS after a image copy to correct for any missing files.

Thanks again!
How do I reinstall the OS? Doesn't that cost $$ from Adaptec any more? Regards. Gary |

Re: 1100 Drive Error
You must all ready own the sup (OS) file to do that. Just try to get all you can with dd. 25meg copies the complete os, only thing missing is some of the language files and maybe parts of the help. Never did get the full details, 40 meg should be complete. Most are just happy the units is up and working, and not a door stop.

Re: 1100 Drive Error
Thanks again. That's a pretty crappy way to do business, IMHO. That's like Microsoft or Apple charging you another $200 to reload your OS if your HD crashes, even though you already paid for it when you purchased the PC.
I assume that I can put in pretty much any sized HD, with the OS version I have, correct? ***UPDATE*** I ran DD, and got the following errors: hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error} hdb: read_intr: Error 0x40 {UncorrectableError} , LBASect=1, High=0, Low=1, Sector=0 End Request: I/O Error 0+0 records in 0+0 records Out The file was created, but I suspect that it is empty? What do you think? If this is indeed the case, I guess I am screwed unless I can locate an image file or pay more $$ to Adaptec. Sigh... Regards, Gary Last edited by teamgs; 04-13-2007 at 10:24 AM. |

Re: 1100 Drive Error
Teamgs, If you bought it new, it came on the cd.
But you will require a image since your HD went south. Provide you did every thing correct with dd. The error is on the pri controller slave postion. Is this your where you had it mounted? Hard believe if you can still boot.

Re: 1100 Drive Error
Hey,
I do have the initial CD's that came with the unit, as I am the original owner. I used DD. The DD that I have uses a graphical interface. I used that interface to mount the primary drive, with a 100mb fat16 partition. I then typed the following DD command at the shell (the snap drive is a slave on prim. ide.) dd if=/dev/hdb of=/mnt/40mbfile bs=1024 count=40000 I also tried dd if=/dev/hdb of=/mnt/25mbfile bs=1024 count=25000 While the files were created, they had 0 byte sizes. Where on the User's CD would the image file be? I can't seem to find anything but the Assist proggy and the manuals. Regards, Gary Last edited by teamgs; 04-13-2007 at 02:05 PM. |
