Default Snap 520 drive replacement

Hey all, looking for some help with a Snap 520 with 4x1 TB drives in RAID 5. It's got a failed drive (no worries as there was a global spare) that I need to replace.

I've tried searching for the answer but couldn't find anything that really fit my question.

Short story is that I actually have an identical make/model 1TB hard drive to what is in the Snap, but it's not one of Overland's hot-swap drives. From what I can see online the hotswap drive is nothing but a hard drive in a sled... nothing like HP/Dell/etc's hot-swap drives for their servers.

Anyone know if I can just remove the failed drive from the sled, put my new one in and pop it back in?

I'm not sure if Overland modifies the drives or anything.. want to be sure. The unit is not at my location so I can't just go run and look at it.

Thanks!

That what I do with my 4500.

I think this applies to the 520 & 620 also but please confirm this for us if you do the non-Snap/overland drive upgrade.

One of the more reasonable things about SnapServers is that they do not impose on you to use only their drives unless you want to continue the hardware warranty, something busnesses require dependant on the role of the SnapServer.

If you have a valid hardware warranty or you would like to keep extending the hardware warranty, which you can easily do for years 3, 4 & 5 of your snap servers lifetime, you should only replace drives with a SnapServer replacement HDD's.

Once your hardware warranty has expired and if your are not planning to extend the hardware warranty there seems to be nothing stopping you adding whatever drives you like in order to extend the usefulness of your original investment of that SnapServer, you just need to know the process on how to upgrade HDD’s.

This allows IT managers to upgrade and redeploy SnapServers into non-critical roles like backup image dumps etc maximising their ROI.

It also allows many of the users on this site the ability to procure SnapServers and upgrade for home use.

Many other enterprise storage units through the use of custom firmware limit their users ability to do this, in particular there is a case when the product was very quickly EOL’ed and now in the products 3rd year it is simply impossible to find replacement drives.
