HUGE drives in Snap 2200

Hello all! This is my first post, so please excuse my n00bness. I am thinking about getting a Snap 2200 and have seen that several people in this thread have successfully installed 250GB drives. Has anyone tried some of the new REALLY REALLY big drives in a 2200, like the new 400-500GB drives? If not, I might be the first to try. The only thing that I am worried about is heat. It looks like there is not a lot of room in the case, and I wonder how putting 2 large drives in will affect case temp. Thanks!

Iv'e got 2 x 300 gigs in mine, No Problems.
The 2200 have a good cooling setup. You could upgrade the fan, I did.
I'm going to be replacing my fans every 2-3 yrs. After failed to do it, I tosted my 2000, expensive error.

Yeah, its only the LBA 48bit restriction of 137GB, anything bigger should be fine


There is no correlation between amount of data storage on a drive and the heat it produces. It is to do with the rotation speed and power usage.


David - For the fan replacement, what did you use? As i got a fan the same size, quieter and more airflow, however it was too fat to fit in

Knew some one would ask for that. Finally found what I put in. The fan was made by ebm industries. PN 5912-612F, 60x15mm 17.1cfm, 3900rpm, 27db. Got it from Mouser. The original was 3700rpm, 28db, 13.5cfm. I replaced the drives at the same time. The unit is a little louder than it was. Don't know if it was due to the fan or new drives. One if the mount holes cracked on me whin I installed it. But their is a big difference in air frow. You can feel it blowing. As for the noise, not bad, maybee I will hear it this time if something fails. My 2000 was so quite, you couldn't even tell if it was on, if it wasn't for the lights.

Mine always blows a lot of air through, unless you stick it on a bed or something it cant suck air up

I think mine was 60 x 20mm

Did you mount it outside of the case?

I was looking at Stealth, which is what I buy if they have the correct size. Could not find one to fit. Your price is about 1/3 what it is in the US.

No, i was trying to mount it on the inside like the current fan

I tried a 20mm before, it was into the drives. So I had to drop back to the 15mm like the original. I really think the coolling in the 2200 is ok. These shipped with 7200rpm drives from the factory. And since most mfg have switched over to the FDB (fluid dynamic bearings) the drives run cooler than they did 3-5 yrs ago.
