A log of my concoction (W/ PICS!!!)
Blame Black eagle for asking to see what I am doing....
I just got the 2-342 today, ripped it apart and put it back the way I wanted (2" long inlet and outlet) Borrowed my coworker's digicam (thanks young!). This is my first attempts with it and set it for smaller images so here goes w/ the first batch! As I got it.... After tube removal (notice oval inlet/outlet) Finished product w/ 2" inlet/outlet and a 120mm fan for scale

I like the pics he's posted so far. They're extremely small, yet detail isn't a problem. They're also very easy on the bandwidth.

I read the title and immediately thought "He's gonna take a picture of the toilet after he's taken a dump"
I guess there are no pictures because he dropped the digicam into the bowl after the deed and is too horrified to attempt to retrieve it, and is busy debating with himself whether or not he should just simply flush anyway and cut his losses. |

How the @#$@#$ do you get pictures posted?
Never had to find a spot to stick stuff b4, got pictures and nowhere to put em!Modding the heater core was easy compared to this!)
For the pre-picture entertainment.... 1) was the core as received - preztel tubing hands in front of core (makes it kinda hard to install) 2) is badly focused view w/ tubes removed but gets the point across (note the oval holes in the tanks in your imagination ) 3) is final product shined up and w/ new 2" pieces of tubing sticking straight out like we want. finned area is exactly the width of 2 120mm fans! (very convenient for shroud making). More when I figure out how to get pictures in here (suggestions appreciated)

Works fine now. How did you attach barbs? It almost looks like the holes you cut are rectangular.

That's just the way it was...
Those holes you see in pic 2 are just the way they were cut, I just desoldered / removed the original pipes and cut off ~2" of each one (dremel) and bent them to fit back in the holes and resoldered (propane torch) Whole thing took about 45 mins. (was doing 4 other things for work in between). No barbs, just straight tubing. Will use variable temp heat gun to get tygon/clearflex to fit over 3/4" inlet from CPU. (More Pics soon?!)

Looks like a great core, with a nice, low pressure drop.
Boiling the tubing works really well too. I have used it to get 3/8" braided silicone(very stiff!) over a 1/2" barb. When the tubing cools, it makes a contracts to make a watertight seal over the barb; almost no need for hoseclamps. Only trouble is trying to get the hose *off*. I had to use a utility knife to cut mine off. Still, getting 1/2" over 3/4" tubing might be tough... 1/4" is a lot of stretching! If you do use the heat gun, be careful not to weaken the tubing too much... would suck to have your tubing split when your comp is on! Anyway, I'm sure you know what you're doing tho. |

Some heatercore luvin ... *bumpage*
People just entering the scene should take a look at this ... it would definitely save them some money in most cases and give them better results overall.

Where I got it
my 2-342 $22.97 at rockauto
Note the 9090, you can go up a level and look for others easily (8000-up.gif?) Then go to home page, get catalog and go to search tab, under part number. Got it in 1-2 days (Me in IL, Them in WI/IA)

For those interested, the pressure drop curve is available here.
Nice, very nice. I also picked up a chevy core, #304, and I really hope that the pressure drop is as low! (0.25m H2O, 10" H2O or .36 psi, all at ~14 lpm, aka 3.7gpm, or 223 gph, +/- 10%) |

To BB2k
Go there b4 ordering, and also check out abit forum.
Demoulous opens up the bios for a7n8x (A3 NB/SB stepping) to allow chipset voltage changes. This may not work w/ earlier rev 1.04 boards (one of which is now my WIFES computer!) so.... Check out chipset voltage mod done right by marginjohn (wanna get 200FSB?) Okay enough digression.. back to work for mikee

Not bad.
There's a hacked 1004 bios, for the Volt adjustment. Otherwise I also picked up that the A7N8X officially supports FSB200 in rev 2.0. I just compared the 2-342 and the 2-304, and I think it'll turn out quite well. I might pick up a second one, on a whim. |

My NF7S rev2.0 did 200 out of the box on default voltage, only thing holding me back is my Twinmoss 3200 [nudge, nudge BB], I'll be replacing it with some of their 3700 (which is nearly as cheap!) to get the cas 2:2:2:2:5 timings the 3200wont give, even at the mobo 3.0 volts maxV  ...
Are you aware of the SATA RAID corruption issues BB?, with Asus and Abit onboard Silicone Image Ltd controllers... All revision abitNF7 mobos are to support 200FSB with a bios update, is this not the case with asus?... |

Yes, very much aware.
I'm opting for the drive in my sig: Seagate Barracuda 5, 120 GB, ATA-100, 3 yr warranty. I might add a Raptor, if the problem ever gets decently solved. |

Nice work Mike,
I ordered mine from a local Napa for $30.00 so you got a better price. But due to our ordering from differant sources brings up a interesting point. We didn't get the same core! I Agree that both were first set up with the same twisted tubes coming off them. Clear they about had to be for the same installation or car/truck. But I see a number of differances, some cosmetic but a couple that will cause some change in performance. (Do you recall the car/truck yours was supposed to be for? Mine was for a chevy 69-72 pickup with air.) A list of the differances I see, and others I suspect from your description. 1) Differant tanks, mine had some creased spots in the tanks yours don't. And on mine the tubes weren't flatened into ovals, they went in round. I'm not sure, but I think the tanks on yours are a bit smaller overall. Would account for the flatened inlet/outlets. Hard to tell for sure though just from posted pics of the two. 2) The one I ordered has 14 plate/tubes, 13 in the one you're working on. 3) Demenisons on the fined area of the one I bought, 9 1/4 X 6 3/8 X 1 15/16". What are the exact sizes on yours? I'm wondering if it matches the one listed on the Fedco site. That ones demensions were, 9 1/2 X 6 1/8 X 2. The differances noted in the tanks, numbers of tubes & shape of the inlets/outlets would change performance. Will also make a differance in where each can be fitted if the demensions are differant. I'd really thank you for taking the time to messure the outer demensions and fined area for me for comparison. I bought mine thinking it would be good fit for a build I intend this summer fall. But as it is 1/4" wider than I'd expected it is going to be damned tight. If yours matches the Fedco demensions I could order one from Rockauto.com. Won't order of course until I see I have to, but it would be real nice to know. Thanks man, and I'm real glad you posted this. Most of all with the pics, I didn't catch the differances until those came up. Thanks again, BE Last edited by Blackeagle; 04-27-2003 at 08:28 AM. |

By the way, I like the layout job you did for your shroud, nice.
Have been thinking I'm going to use acrylic for my shrouding. Forces a bit more squared up shape, but nice see through looks, or with tint or mirrored options. Where in the case is the rad to go? |
