AsusA7N8X chipset block
Has anyone installed a chipset waterblock onto their a7n8x? if so, what block was it and how much of a difference has it made for you?

I did. I used my Aquacomputer Twinplex NB block. It made no difference from my previous mobo (A7V). Same mounting holes. It just sits at 45° (well, just like the chip itself...)

i guess what i mean by difference is, in order to get a good overclock (im wanting to bump up the system bus significantly), do you have to watercool it since all it comes standard with is a passive heatsink.

Definitively, yes.
First, stock HS comes with a crappy thermad pad that does *not* even touch the chip surface. Better take it off and lap that surface, and put thermal grease. Next ppl who have done that reported burning hot HS at speeds near 200MHz. Active cooling is mandated for extreme FSBs. Personally i never ran the mobo with its stock heatsink as i already had the watercooling hardware at hand. But now, with some fiddling and a new BIOS, i'm running over 200 FSB without any problem. |

I have that same mobo. I havent been able to get it running yet(no cpu) but I heard that it had themal tape under the chipset heatsink. I was going to remove that H/S but that tape seems to have a good hold on it. How did you remove yours brute force and ignorance?

I had not to since i never used the stock HS. But it's a conventional thermal pad, use a razor blade or a large flat screwdriver, then alcohol (or acetone) to remove it. Yeah, basically, brute force. Then lap the base (to remove those screwdriver marks...)

Use a fingernail to score the pad surface, then you can acetone wash it off. As an added bonus, you won't have as much damage (if any) to lap off. I've never scored a surface with a fingernail yet. It is also easier on the chip itself when some of the goop sticks to it, hehe.

Since you're in the U.S., try DangerDen, their Z-block is awesome.

Hey Shadco
I have almost the same setup as you, save the WB on the NB chip. Did putting the wb on help jump the FSB any? The thing is, I am at 190x12 now, but I have 2 sticks of 2700. I am wondering if it would be worth it to add in the NB block, or is it my ram holding me back? I took the stock HS off, lapped it, and gave it some AS3 lovin, but I really want to get to 200.
Just one other question, I am running the Hydor L120, will that be enough flowwise if i do add in the NB waterblock? |

PCmark but normally I run it at 12.5x200 for folding. folding and I can run the sunon 84cfm fan at 7 volts and she stays nice, cool, and quiet which is what I was shooting for. Shad

well, i just ordered a dangerden z block for the chipset, a new top for my waterblock, and stainless steel mounting hardware. I'm looking foward to gettin all this and gettin it setup, maybe i can actually post some pics of one of my systems on here (this will be my fifth revised watercooling setup) Thanks all the input on the chipset block everyone.

I just ordered the same as well. Looking forward to getting that "Z" chipset block on there and passing 200
