Default To HDD boot Image or Not to HDD boot Image

That is the question....

I have a question or two and suggetion for an addition to the Wiki;

A list or matrix to show what units do & don't need a boot image on the 1st HDD

My understanding is that the SS1000 & SS2000 do not need HDD Boot images - so I would assume that this would also be the same for the SS4000?

I just picked a SS4000 up, litterally out of the bin at work so I guess I will find this answer out soon enough.

From upgrading a SS2000 I know it doesn't need it so I assume the SS1000 would be the same?

Snap Server 1000 ??? 90% Not required ???
Snap Server 2000 HDD boot Image not required
Snap Server 4000 ??? 50% Not required ???

Snap Server 1100 Required
Snap Server 2200 Required
Snap Server 4100 ??? 90% Required ???

When it comes to the SS1100, SS2200 & SS4100, I assume they all need a HDD Boot Image but;

Can the Drive images from these be interchanged between the 3 units? - E.g. can the drive image from the 2200 be used on a SS4100?

Does the 4100's image have to be on more than 1 drive, or is it simply copied over from the first?

(my undersatdning is that the image is kept on 2 or 3 of the drives for redundancy, when you go to RAID 5 you must have the image accross at leat 3 drives if it is just on 1 drive and that is the one that dies then you loose the whole array anyway?)

It would be great to hear back, thank you!

1000 - At least some of them have the OS on the HD, not flashram.

4100 - The OS is in flashram.

4000 - The OS is in flashram.

OS in flashram = no boot image required for fresh drive(s).

Only non-flashram snaps require a image file. Can not be used with a flashram unit.

The 1000v1 does not. V2 yes to image file.
2200 yes to image file, different than 1000v2. Same as the 1100's

Note: 1000's are strange units some require some do not. Some need the 2200 other 1000.

Did I muddy the water enough for you ??????

Yeas as clear as mud!

So to be correct;

Snap Server 1000v1 *Boots from Flashram - HDD boot Image not required
Snap Server 1000v2 *HDD boot Image not required

Snap Server 2000 *Boots from Flashram - HDD boot Image not required
Snap Server 4000 *Boots from Flashram - HDD boot Image not required

Snap Server 1100 *HDD boot Image not required
Snap Server 2200 *HDD boot Image not required
Snap Server 4100 *Boots from Flashram - HDD boot Image not required

So the answer to the question about swapping the boot images is yes, you can use the SS2200 image on the SS1100...

However The SS2200 Boot Image will not work on the SS1000v2? As the SS1000v2 have there own separate boot image

Just I as expected, let me clear a few areas up.
Quote:
Snap Server 1000v2 *HDD boot Image
REQUIRED but different than the 2200

Quote:
Snap Server 1100 *HDD boot Image
REQUIRED

Quote:
Snap Server 2200 *HDD boot Image
REQUIRED

Wrong Will work on some. This is a gray area.

Like I early said it's very confusing.

Then there are 2 different 2000's.
v1 was may by Meridain and does not support LBA48bit. Has EDO SIMM's Ram

Did I make it worst
