Default Another Newbie DOH!!!!!

Just joined up site looks great hope when i find my feet a bit with all this i can help others out.

Sorry to start with some some questions but i am new to all this and a bit stuck.

I have had lan nas servers for a while and found them pretty good but just bought a snap 1100 160gb off ebay. When i recieved this i had the solid green system light a few blips from the hdd light and nothing else quickly realised there was no hdd in it . After swearing for a few mins i put an old 20gb ide drive in to see if it worked and it did fire up. Problem i have got is i cannot get an i.p address for the config pages. Its plugged in my netgear 834b cable router and i believe this is supposed to dhcp it an i.p address but nothing. Although when i first plug it into the router the net led does flash for a while. Firewall is off on my router but still nothing. Any Help would be much appreciated.

Also cant get the server to power off from the little square button at the back Tried holding it in, pressing it quick, nothing seems to power this server down without cutting the power. Any ideas ??

Once again appologies for the questions.

The 1100 models have the OS stored on the HD. You will need to load the OS before it will boot. Instruction can be found in the wiki section.

If the unit has been reset to factory, it requires Assist to locate and do the initial setup.

The 1100's support large drives (>137gig) with the proper OS (3.4.805+).

Depending on the age Adaptec has provided v3.4.807 free. But you need a RAW Image file to get your's up and running. Assist won't do you any good till the OS is loaded on the HD. Adaptec will send you assist on request, free. You need to find another 1100 or 2200 and copy the boot tracks to your HD. Once it boots you will need to reload the OS to make sure everything is there. Instruction on wiki section of this forum.

As for the OS's, Copyrighted laws are enforced on this site. Read the Notice at the top of the threads. We are monitored here.

...so be afraid...VERY afraid. Adaptec realizes that we are actually helping people, something they WILL not tolerate.

He can sell them on ebay and make some money. We buy hardware all the time from ebay. Being on a budget we have to be thrifty.

See them up there all the time with OS on them and out rages prices.

Well, I was not thinking of ebay or outrageous prices. I was thinking of when users here on the forum run into trouble like this, and NOT at some ourageous price either, but rather to be helpful.

If he has the drive let him send you a copy of the boot tracks, if he haven't over written it with another system by now. That way if he's concers about the data it will not be compromised.

That is a major problem with corp discarding old equipment. They pull the drives and sleds if equiped and destroy them as a unit. So not all the pieces are their if some ones buy it. No longer a complete units, salvage for parts only.

To be honest mate he sold the unit as up and running and in mint condition.
So i was gutted when i reieved that canabalised unit instead. He was not up for refunding me because he couldn't understand it should have had a hard drive i think he has just got a load of corporate throwouts cheap, saw the green system light came on and sold them as working. But to be fair he is now offering full refund. I thought i was going to be stuck with it that was why i was trying to fix it.
Didnt realise either what a nightmare it would be to get a good os honestly thought they were just linux freeware "Twat" i know.

Still ,found a great site with genuinely helpful people so alls not lost.
Keeping my eyes peeled now on ebay for a working server "with drive".

Cheers

He should cover return postage too for all the problem he put you through.

My last purcase (2200) was suppose to be a Snap Referb. When I started it up, doing drive config, it went into panic mode. Diag showed a failed drive. I was able to renogiate a new price to allow me to replace the drive.

Totally agree but bet he won't i will ask. Had a hell of a week with all this to be honest just want my money back and get set up and running with a working unit.
The guys got 100% pos feedback as well, think i'm jinxed. Good thing about all this is i'm learning loads. I was reading some of the threads on this site and must confess not understanding most of them but its all bloody interesting anyway.

Gutted i've got to wait for another unit though i have no patience at all.

So what are you looking for and what price range? 1 drive, 1 drive, 4? Large storage, or smaller? I will keep my eyes peeled or see what I got, or whatever.

If you can afford it go for the 2000 or 2200's, then you will be able to run in RAID1 and have protected data.

Was the 2200 i was looking for originally. Very interested in RAID is this the ability to have one protected drive and one public. "Did say i was a newbie".sorry.
Was looking to spend about £100-£150 on something can't spend to much more than that without the mrs divorcing me. Have been on a gadget binge over the last few months.

I don't remember the conversion for pounds to dollars, but based on what I saw when Shane was trying to get a 2200, I am guessing that will be pushing it. For whatever reason the 2200's go for a pretty penny. Funny thing is, you can get a good 4 drive unit for the same price or lower.

As I said before, RAID 5 man, RAID 5...

And you can pick up 2000 V2's for under $100 if you get lucky. I paid $119 for mine which wasn't too bad. and put 2x400gb drives in it. It might not be as fast when transfering data as a 2200 but it offers everything else. And since i dont spend a lot of my day copying data to and from my snap it's a very good solution for me. I am still trying to find a 2200 though. Just because i like em.
