Plz HELP --- installed 4x new HD on my SNAP4000 and now its DEAD
Hi folks,
i'm new here and i hope can develop my knowledge in SnapServers i own a snap server 4000 and 4100 . i have the Snapserver Versions 3.4..x.x. and newest one 4.x.x.x. as pub.files on CD but no bin.file for reinstalling the devices! my problem is: that i installed 4x new HDs at once on my 4000. So I'm not able to get the snapserver via network anymore; when i power on the device, is booting, but you are not able to get it via webgui or so. The only leds which a green lighted are "System" and the "Link" one, there is no disk checking or so ... "Net" gets sometimes a blinking in orange .... my router has no snap4000 in his ip-range or ip-table --- i my opinion i was so stupid to erase the os !!! the device, is booting, but you are not able to get it via webgui or so. The only leds which a green lighted are "System" and the "link" one, there is no disk checking or so ... "Link" gets sometimes a blinking in orange .... i read a lot of articles here: 1. How do I repair a 4000 with NO HD's installed? The 4000 has the OS stored in Flash ram. All that you need to do is install the hard drives. If you discover that the help files are missing, you need to reinstall the OS from the complete version. ---> seems not to work in my case or Download Knoppix if you do not have it. 1. Install the hard drive on your computer. I installed mine as the slave on the Primary IDE port. 2. Insert the knoppix cd and boot from the CD. Does not suport SATA. 3. Open a terminal window 4. Type "sudo su" 5. Type "dmesg|grep hd" And locate the device id of your hard drives Examples : hda1 = primary master = win98 hdb = primary slave = snap hd 6. Type "mount -t auto /dev/hda1 /mnt" This should mount hda1 (your win98 hd) as /mnt 7. Type "ls /mnt" You should have a directory listing of the files on windows hd c:\ Warning: If you DO NOT have a directory listing of your Windows HD, DO NOT CONTINUE. Verify that the dev ID that you used is correct. Repeat step 6,7,8 8. Type "dd if=/dev/hdb of=/mnt/filename bs=1024 count=25000" This just takes a minute and it is done. (bs = blocksize, count=kb) 9. Type "ls /mnt" You should have a directory listing where the image files was saved. 10. Now power down and re-install the drive back it in the snap. these are the right steps for my problem? i'am very disappointed because i just bought 4x new devices Is it right that i'm able to to extract the os from the 4100 to my 4000 or is there any other method to get my snapserver 4000 running again?? Could you please so kind and assists me in the case thx a lot patlin |

Re: Plz HELP --- installed 4x new HD on my SNAP4000 and now its DEAD
Now it these are brand NEW and every thing set to factory settings you may need to use ASSIST to locate the server and do the initial setup. Once the network side is setup Assist is no longer needed unless you reset the network settings.
Both 4000 and 4100 have the OS stored in flashram. Install drive 1 and start the unit. It will take ~ 10 min for the OS to be decompressed and loaded. After 10 min you should be able to connect to the server. The 4000 has a history of weak/bad power supplies. I would suggest using a ps from a pc to power your HD's. This should get you up. You should not need to do the boot track transfer. That is the options used on 1x00, 2200 models. You may need to reference the FAQ's in my signature.

Re: Plz HELP --- installed 4x new HD on my SNAP4000 and now its DEAD
hi all,
short update: _________________________________________________ if not -- i going to try this: 1. install first hd on IDE1, ?cable selected? 2. connect hd with external ps from pc 3. Power ON, SNAP 4000 4. wait 10-15min 5. connect via setup assist 6. set ip via webgui does not work either! i tired to reset the snapsaver but i'm not able to do it, because the DISK-LED never gets lighted !!! --> (wait until both the System and Disk lights start flashing in sync) Could any screenshots help to analyse the status of the device?? LED status is: SYSTEM LED: Steady Light --- DISK LED: off ; do not care about 10min-30min running. thx for everything, investing your time on my issue Last edited by patlin; 11-14-2008 at 01:08 PM. |

Now what size & mfg of HD's are you trying to install? Some brands cause problems at times. In the wiki section there is a list of upgrade notes that may help. Are you sure the Cat5e cable is good? This will not make any difference if the HD leds do not light. Remember the HD are are numbered left to right. So drive 1 will be the far left one.

Re: Plz HELP --- installed 4x new HD on my SNAP4000 and now its DEAD
Thx for still taking care ...
ok, the s/n of my device is: 307454 with colored cables as you can see in the picture http://img528.imageshack.us/my.php?i...pensnapjq9.jpg Which hd would be the drive 1?
i have serveral hds here for testing form 20gigs,40gigs, 80gigs, 250gigs, 320gigs and 400gigs. It does not work - not matter which hd i take ! # 4x 400gigs were just installed and was running fine in my box, - the box was not handle to build a raid5 on it, so i just tired a raid5 with 3x 400gigs and one as single disc! -hehe, so i was trying if it is possible to resize the raid5 on 4x320gigs (which means that 3x 400gigs hd get resized ) - this was also working fine. After some time i feel dissatisfied with this solution because of wasting space so i wanted to go back to my first solutuion: 4x400gigs, 3 in Raid5 and 1 in SINGE DISC mode!!! But after formating the 4x400gigs discs under windows --- the snapserver does not come up again, and here we are talking about --- hope we can handle it LED status is: SYSTEM LED: Steady Light --- DISK LED: off ; do not care about 10min-30min running. thx for your support patlin |

Re: Plz HELP --- installed 4x new HD on my SNAP4000 and now its DEAD
You should be using cable select. If I recall the top left is drive 1, but I will have to pull a manual to confirm.
Have you tried do a reset to the 4000 and see if it responds? Some times they get confused and that helps.
