Default Should I upgrade or sell my Snap 2200?

I have a Snap 2200 which currently has a pair of recycled 80GB drives in it (Mirrored), I am going to need more space soon as the wifes laptop is about out of space and I need someplace to dump the older pictures and videos on.

Would I be better served by picking up a pair of larger (250GB to 1TB) drives and installing them into my 2200 (replacing the current pair of 80s) or by selling the Snap (with the 80s in it) and getting a new RAID capable NAS box?
Complicating the situation, I am thinking of (in the next year or so) setting up a small home server with Ubuntu or Centos and if I upgrade the drives, they will probably go into that box (but I will need more storage space in the next month or so).

According to the "About" page on the 2200, I have firmware version 4.0.860, hardware version 2.04 and BIOS version 4.0.855. So, if I read the wiki correctly, I can install larger drives with my current firmware.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

You can install larger drives if the 2200 is currently serving you needs, speed and capacity. I have 2x300gig in my 2200. I keep it up and running because it's quite and still works. I do have a larger 4500 when I need the big guns for speed. Just remember that the SnapOS does not fully support the newer OS's.

The 2200 is doing well serving our music and pictures over the network, I would like to use it more to back up program install files and documents which I do not currently have the space to do.

Speedwise, I currently have a 100 megabit network and it seems to keep up. When we move, I would like to (at some point) go to Gigabit. If I build the *nix server I have been thinking of, it will have gigabit on it.

Are there any issues with using SATA-IDE adapters on a Snap server? I would like to have SATA drives in the server (if I build it) and have thought of getting SATA drives with SATA-IDE adapters for the time being. It would also make it easier to find big drives if I am not limited to IDE drives.

The older snap units are pretty sensitive to timing. But users have used the SATA adapters, but the key is finding some good ones. Ask Phoenix32 on all the problems he ran into when it was working on his project for the 4500.

Just remember that the 2200 will only give you 12Mb/sec transfer speeds max for read, I think it's only 8.5 write. So if you start doing heavy work you will notice the speed.
