Machining paremeters for everybody
Lately, more and more forum users, are getting into waterblock making & machining, but don't know the optimal parameters for machining. So I decided to make thread that will have all data needed in one place.
I will only focus on copper and aluminium, (if someone need any other material just let me know) So first up is drilling : rpm are taken from medium cutting speed: and you can calculate your rpm like this: n = vc * 1000 / d* Pi Where: n = rpm [min-1] vc= cutting speed [m/min] d= bit diameter [mm] Coolin aditives for copper is emulsion (is this the right word) mixture of water, cutting oil and soap or pure cutting oil. And for aluminium use emulsion. Type of drill: N means normal drilling bit, W means drilling bit for softer materials. UPDATE Here are parameters for smoth chanell milling Milling depth shouldn't be greater then 0.5* diameter of the bit UPDATE Parameters for smooth face milling, with end mills Milling depth shouldn't be greater then 1.5* diameter of end mill UPDATE This is the table for dimension conversion from fraction-decimal-milimeters, provided by Fixittt

Morph, thank you for this reference table!
One thing I don't quite understand - the feed rate. Can you explain that a little bit (what mm/round mean?) thx!

This is the speed you need to go down per on revolution. Ex for electrolitic copper and 8mm bit , suggested rpm is 1100 and feed rate is 0.18mm/round, so from this you calculate your speed of drilling : 1100 round/min*0.18mm/round= 198mm/min,so quite fast, but note that this parameters are meant good machine with good cooling, so if your machine slow down when you start drilling that means it lacks power, so the only way is go slower, go in/out more often to remove the cuts and maintain cooling and lubrication, clear now ?
ps. most of the copper you can buy is electrolitic, so this one is harder to machine.

I think it should also be noted that when peckdrilling, you should always pause for a second before you pull the drill bit back up, this will break the burr at the bottom of the hole so that when the drill bit comes back down, it doenst grab the bur and break the drill bit or worse. I have seen peoples face get cut and burned because of this.

for CNC type share ware, here is a good link.
http://www.wokingham.demon.co.uk/software/software.htm Also for a good read on some parts of machining here is a link. http://www.production-machining.com/...es/030202.html Edit hey JayD can ya email me the FTP info again... I found that custom-cooling is gone, but dorellco is still up with some of my stuff. I have some good stuff to add to this thread. fixittt@cimtel.net Thanks. BTW like the new site layout.
