Snap 4200 Upgrades
I have looked all over and cannot find the info I want. At work we currently have a snap 4200 with the following specs:
Model____Software_____Hardware_____BIOS_____VM 4200____5.0.133 SP1___05.02.00______3B02_____1.4.2_13-b06 4 x 160gb HD, GenuineIntel Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz, 256 MB ram. I do have a Support Contract with Overland, but what upgrades can this thing handle? What processors can I add or ram and just how big can the drives be? Also, if i do upgrade any of this, how will it affect my contract with overland? |

Re: Snap 4200 Upgrades
I do not know how Overland will address these. But in the past you have a 3 mo software support and a 3yr?(maybe only 1) hardware warranty. If you have a service contract them you have extended OS support & hardware depending on which lever of support you elected to take.
In the past the 4200 could be upgraded in CPU, RAM (3gig max), HD to your heart desire. The GOS has a limit of ~23T, so unless you have an expansion unit your fine. Now with that said Adaptec was talking about making it so you had to buy the HD at an inflated price. NOT SURE IF OVERLAND WILL SUPPORT ANY UPGRADES UNLESS THEY DID IT. I know of several machines that were upgraded with 750gig and 1T drives. You are tied by the IDE interface on the older hardware. I know CPU were upgrade, but be aware of buss speed. Ram has never been any problem but require EEC.

Re: Snap 4200 Upgrades
After all I have seen here, I am not really into the free support thing anymore, but I still watch your back David.
What David just said is not quite accurate (sorry). There are issues with some processors, some power things to consider, some RAM issues, some heat issues, and even some drives issues with some type drives. The hardware IS configurable, but it has many hidden limits. I spent a great deal of time testing many many many configurations, and there are some traps, hurdles, dead ends, and limits. Unless you know what you are doing (and I mean real hardware training), leave it alone (except maybe memory). Well, unless you want to start shopping for a replacement motherboard etc. |

Re: Snap 4200 Upgrades
Thanks for correcting me, I was missing your knowledge base. I was just going on general info, since you have been MIA awhile. With the 4200 being the lower end model I would suspect some twerks, just being a Snap. Even memory can cause a problems if you start mixing mfg and speed. With 256-512meg being factory, 1gig and > would make a huge boost.
Welcome Back Andy, I know your taking a low profile.
