Well, spoke too soon. While it looked like it was up and running and there were no new errors in the log, when I tried to copy some files it just sat there spinning it's wheels.

So now I have it going through the same disk check I've been doing for the last three days. Three more hours and I should be able to start copying again. It looks like something happens overnight that causes a problem the following day. What that might be I have no clue.

Really what I was getting at was that my snap did know the difference. You are right though, it isn't totally foolproof and I wouldn't bet my data on it.
