Steel or Aluminium for a fan shroud?

I'm building a fan shroud for either dual 120*120*38 or perhaps 52mm thick fans if I find a place that sells widebody fans. Acehardware sells both Aluminum and Steel sheet metal. The Al looks much cooler and is easier to work with, though its not as strong as steel.

Will Al be strong enough or should I go with steel?

the Ally should be good enough.

Have you looked at Unloaded's Plexi' shroud?...

I used 0.5mm thick ally sheeting for my radiator shrouds. When folded and bolted together properly it is quite strong enough for one's needs, even for mobile lanning. It's all a matter of ensuring that it's rigid in all 3 dimensions, which isn't that hard to do with a little bit of thought.

Yep!, it's nice and easy to fold as well, you'll get neat professional looking edges, plus you won't have to rust proof it ;) ...

What? You're not using cardboard and duct tape? What is the world coming to these days ....

aluminum is plenty strong its not going to be supporting any weight realy.
Shoot give me some note book paper and masking tape and i can make a duct that will suport 4 thick body 120mm fans under power and not have it blow out or colapse.

Agreed. Ghetto is the only way to go!

Aluminium should be strong enough, and is definitely easier to work with than steel.

i'm using fiberglass in my new setup i'm working on.

i would go with steal for fear of the fan vibrating too much but that would depend on a bunch of other things (like the design, thickness or how powerful the fan is)

Don't forget brass, it is also a nice choice for making shrouds.

Where did you get the brass? We're both in Tucson, so if theres a local source, I'd love to know about it!

Honestly, I have search the internet looking to buy this 0.64 brass at a cheaper cost than what I pay locally and by the time you include shipping its cheaper in Tucson. Any of the local Ace Hardwares has a hoppy bin called Special Shapes. I buy the 6"x12"x0.64 and the 0.64x1"x36" from this display.
