Sealing barbs to pump...
My pump's manual says not to use teflon tape to create a watertight seal for the inlet and outlet. What should I use instead? I would like to be able to remove the barbs if I have to also. Any ideas?

Teflon tape can be sliced into tiny shreds when screwing fitting together. Tiny shreds of teflon clog waterblocks and wrap around impellors.
What pump?

It's a Dolphin Pond 385GPH pump. Is there some sort of silicon caulking that I can use but wont seal permenantly?

The putty-like thread sealers commonly known as 'pipe dope' should work. Any place that sells plumbing parts will have it.
Does that pump have a fairly thin plastic housing? Another reason they warn against teflon tape is that it makes it easy to over-tighten the barbs and crack the housing. Plastic fittings reduce this risk.

True, but I have used teflon successfully. It's all in how you wrap it around the thread of the barb, and how carefully you screw it into the pump.

Alright, I'll get some plastic fittings and some pipe dope. Thanks for the information. I didn't even think about the tape getting into the system. Thanks.

Loctite makes a teflon pipe sealer paste that I like a lot. Very useful stuff. Your local auto parts store almost certainly has it...

I use this sealant from Loctite and I like it a lot too:

It's normally meant for plastic threadings but it works great on metal or mixed threadings too, and it's not permanent.
CD :)
Edit: 200th post!

And none of these will seal so tight that I can't get the barbs off with a little force, right?

The Loctite 5331 is flexible after drying, and not permanent.

And the teflon paste will actually make it easier to remove (than dry threads).
FWIW, I've gotten fittings loose that have been sealed with Goop - but they were metal-on-metal and I was using an air impact wrench.
