Eheim inside or outside of the reservoir
 

If you have room enough, what is better - Eheim 1250 inside the reservoir or outside of it?

Eheim say you get the best performance by submerging thier submergable pumps. You must also ensure the pump is run wet as the water lubricates the bearings, and submerging mostly guarantees this. But you will add the heat generated by the pump to the water. Your choice, mine is in the res.

outside...ehiem puts off some heat...i thought all their pumps where inline??:shrug: :shrug:

Thats nonsense. It will be a little cooler, but otherwise the same.

What bearings?

Just wondering, have you ever looked at a magdrive pump? They are totally sealed. From the pumps perspective, submerged will be the same as inline. Its not like they have gapeing holes that let coolant leak out the sides if not submerged.

The only advantage of submerged is easy purging, though with a res inline is really easy too. Meanwhile the heat issue is BS. Even inline 80% of the heat is going into the coolant.

Do whats easiest.

Eheim's do not use the same drive system as a Danner so you can not compare them as far as bearings or lack thereof.

Wow, so much venom. I can't find the comment on performance so maybe that is not accurate. The impellor spindle on the Eheims runs in a ceramic bearing that is lubricated by the water being pumped, that is why they have to be primed before use - so the bearing surface gets some lubricant.

I haven't done any testing on differences in heat added to water between inline and submerged configuration. You quote 80%, would you care to present your test setup and measurments taken to validate this? Or is it bs?

the pumps run inline or submersible. In fact, you can remove the intake nozzle from the pump and install a little blue filter (included) inside of the light gray part, where the intake is. It sucks water in, and shoots it onto your girlfriends white t-shirt. :D

When you said bearings, I though "ball bearings". Anyway I see what you are saying, so yes the coolant does lubricate it, but it doesn't matter if its submerged or not.

BS of course. :) I'm not sure how I could simulate the resistance of a cooling setup, minimize heat loss and measure acturately enough to derive a good figure for watts. However my 1250 runs fairly cool to the touch (much much cooler then a hard disk nearby with more air flow and much less power radiated). Therefore I reasoned that 4/5 of the heat was entering the coolant.

Regardless with heatercores easily handleing several hundred watts, the difference between 10 or 20w is irrelevent.

I've never opened a Danner, I was refering to the generic class of pumps with an impellor floating on a magnetic field. Is this the wrong name ?:shrug:

What about EMI? My Eheim 1048 puts out alot of EMI. I actually bought the pump, because I've heard that they were shielded. So wouldn't it help a little bit to put it in a reservoir? Perhaps one made of ordinary steel? Or thick plastic?
