Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
Can I please get a copy of SnapOS v3.4.805 or
point me to the right location where I can get one? Thank you! |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
Can anyone please help me. I thought that I read that the ver 4 resides entirely on the harddrives and that ver 3.4.805 lives in flash. Also can someone send me a link or the file itself for 3.4.805 or .807. I am working on Snap 4000 model. Thanks.

Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
Your data is wrong. The model controls where it resides.
The 4000 resides in flashram. |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
I have much the same problem with my 1000 and my 4000. I have a file called "SnapOS_4_0_860_upg.exe" that I acquired a while back from somewhere (Quantum?) but never installed. Recently I decided to upgrade the drives in both my units, but both Assist and the command line upgrade tool tell me that "This file is not a valid upgrade for your server." The three sup files contained in that executable are "Snap_4_x.sup", "snap_jvm.sup", and "snap_ServerSync.sup". I'd be happy to send the file with anyone who thinks it might help them, but in the mean time I'm having trouble finding the correct file to allow my servers to see decent-sized drives.
And as has been mentioned many times on this forum, Adaptec's support (and their website) just plain sucks. Thanks in advance for any help! Dave Klingler |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
Ahhhh, now I think I get it. I'm guessing I might have Adaptec's crippled 4.0.860 upgrade that won't work on machines that don't already have 4.x. I have to get the version up to 4 first.
Unfortunately Adaptec tells me that because I registered my servers a long time ago, I've gone beyond my complimentary support period and I must now pay to email or phone them. I guess I could call up and yell at someone, given that they're actually punishing me for registering my products without first having a reason to ask for support. Lovely people. Anybody have a 4.x image they could email me? Thanks! Dave |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
A second reply to my own posts: I've updated the Wiki to reflect some of the information that gets posted here on a regular basis, under the sections "OS Updates and Other Files" and "Snap OS v.4.0.860". Please take a look at those sections and correct anything I might have gotten wrong or omitted.

Maybe you just need to make the distinction between the upgrade kit and the full new OS. I got the impression that no one could upgrade from V3 to V4. Not quite Dave, :hammer: I upgraded a 4000 from OS: 3.1.603 (US) to 4.0.860 You best tweek the WIKI. oidar |

Thanks, radio. I went ahead and added some clarification.

Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
Im jumping on the bandwagon too! Ive got a 4000 with the following stats:
Software: 2.3.417(US) Hardware: 2.0.1 BIOS: 2.0.282 Honestly I dont need to upgrade the drives however Im concerned that I may be missing out on new features with v3.x.xxx One problem Im having is with deleting folders. Without any rhyme or reason, when I try to delete a folder with subfolders and files, I get an "Access Denied" error. I can then drill down in the folder and delete the contents THEN delete the parent folder...but this is a pain in the a$$! What features/benefits will I get when someone is kind enough to send me the latest firmware/software? Will it fix this issue? BTW, im accessing the snap with many XP pro machines. Thanks for all your help (in advance) -S |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
Okay, I can't contain my laughter any longer... Sorry... :laugh2:
#1 There is this huge "pinned" message thread where Adaptec has made it clear that there are to be no posting of FTP links and the like to "their" OS for downloads. #2 The information in #1 above pretty much excludes this forum in having anything to do with transfering of the SNAP OS to anyone. This would include public and private messages etc. #3 Even with the information in #1 and #2 above, this information being very clear in the "pinned" message thread, there is hardly a day goes by that someone is not giving the "me too" message in wanting the OS. Now all of this is well and good I suppose, but here is the hillarious part... :ha: #4 99% of these "me too" people do not provide an e-mail address, or at least have it in their forum profile, so that if someone ever really did want to help them out, that person or persons would never be able to send the needed info to them without using the forum to do so, which is clearly out of the question based on the information in #1 and #2 above. I mean, really, come on, this is not rocket science here on this one. But, but, but, I don't like giving my e-mail address out to people I don't know! Sure sure, but you want those same people you don't know to provide you with something. Hey, common sense says it is the "wantee" who has to step out and take a chance by providing their e-mail address right? :hammer: I might also add as a side note, It is these same rocket scientists who sit back and ask and wait over and over and wonder why they never get the item they desire. And for the few who might get results, how many of these kind, nice, begging individuals stick around and try to help others after they themselves have been helped? Sorry, that side note contained a little to much common sense, so I digress... Yeah Yeah, I know someone is going to be offended, but I just could not help myself, I could not contain this laugher at the irony any longer. Call it a charachter flaw in my personality (along with my bad spelling). So shoot me... Okay, I am all better now... :D Disclaimer: This post does not infer that this forum or anyone using this forum would or would not provide copyright materials to anyone else. This post does not infer this forum or any of it's members would or would not even condone that type activity. This post was nothing more than pointing out a little ironic humor. |

First and foremost, I belong to the camp where if its not broken (enough) then dont fix it. I also belong to the camp that doesnt immediately update a production server, which is why I asked about the differences. Heres my email address. Im sure Phoenix32 isnt about to step up to the plate and at least answer my question(s), let alone send me the file to update my server. And, quite honestly, I dont even want the new OS until I figure out the following: 1. If I upgrade, will I have to rebuild the array and reload the data 2. Is there enough benefit to upgrading (primarily concerned about bug fixes) If anyone has some first hand knowledge about the differences, please post them because of the 12 pages here, I didnt read anything about it...and I would think that true IT people would be interested in this! My email address is: CTO @ LeadSenders.com (of course when you use this email, take out the spaces :) |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
Touchy, Touchy. Taking it a little personal aren't ya there pal? Just curious, ever hear the saying, "You catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar"? FYI, there is a big difference between a rant and poking fun at a little irony.
Okay, anywise... There is very very, very, little information available about what each version changed beyond what experimentation has shown (like > 137GB support). Adapcrap is not real good about providing history data on their updates. Here is what little I know... 3.x.x and above add the ability to not have to use the assist utility to do updates etc and various bug patches etc. 3.4.805 and above are needed for drives larger than 137GB. There is a 3.4.807 version, but I do not know anyone who knows what is different between it and 3.4.805. 4.x.x and above is needed for true MS AD support. Word has it that for relative bug free use in 4.x.x you need 4.0.860. 4.x.x and above has better support for Java type stuffs. Yes, there is more detail than said here, but this is the basics... Bottom line, each new minor revision fixes minor bugs here and there. I am sure David, if he feels like it, might be able to provide a little more information than this and there is some information in the WIKI also (you know what a WIKI is right?). |

Now, lessee, for the sake of research, if someone should want to send me their OS files so that I can determine how they differ from each other and update the Wiki accordingly, you can send them to voronwae AT yahoo.com. I would be most stimulated by a 4.0.860 sup package. As usual, if someone else can provide corrections or clarifications to whatever I've written, please send them to me or edit the Wiki. Thanks! :) Dave |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
I believe I'm the David he is refering to.
V3.4.80x has support for MS 2000 AD v4.0.860 is required for MS 2003 AD Support version 4 < 4.0.860 are bug fixes for AD Support and MS bug fix. But there is a work around posted in the wiki section that address the way Snap Handles the AD Support. |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
Phoenix we could have owned a 4200, if we had a $1 for everone that came here looking for the Snap OS upgrades.

Someday, maybe one of us two poor guys wanting one will be able to get one of them I hope. I passed on that 4500 btw. With no OS to put in it, and no drive sleds for it either (you have to have them), it would have just been a paperweight, sadly... |

900b raid 5

I just wanted to say thanks to all who helped me out here. I now have 4 320gb drives building a raid 5 array. (probably will be building for days) When all is setup, I am going to donate some paypal funds to the site that helped me out - ProCooling.com! If you have found the answers here that you are looking for, either from members, the WIKI, the FAQ or the forum, consider supporting this site. (I have zero affiliation with this site or the administrators - but I am grateful) I hope people will all chip in to keep it going. It doesn't take much if we all give a little. |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
I can't speak for the other people here (nor would I try), and I agree that the forum needs support also, but I would like to add an opinion (as always, lol). One of the best things a person can do when they get help here is to stick around, pass it along, and try to help the next person... My 2 cents worth...
Glad you got the help you needed (just like I did a several months back)... |

Yeah, its good you and jontz have stayed around to help me and david out With me being at college, i do end up taking periods away leaving david to sort the questions, but between you, it reduces the load and gets more idea's flying about Shame about these people that then just leave when they've been helped out! Suppose, in most cases we do get thankyou's! Sam |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
The best return of all is stay around and pass the knowledge to others. Being retired I have more time than Phoenix, jontz, and re3dyb0y going to school. I turn down payments on a regular basis, hoping some would stay around and help, guilt trip. A few have. Some have even read the mega thread. Which means they are seeking knowledge. Most all the answers can be found in the threards. But in panic mode, don't want to take the time to read the 6-8 hrs of posts.

Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
I've just acquired a 1000 with the following vital statistics:
Software: 3.1.618 (UK) Hardware: 3.1.2 Serial #: 127553 BIOS: 2.1.366 RAM: 32Mb I'd like to upgrade the latest but the only thing available on the adaptec site is S2S. Trying to open a support incident, I get the message that the box is past it's free period :-( Can anyone point me at the right place to download the appropriate software updates? Thanks in advance! --A. |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
Snap Model 4000
OS 3.1.608 HW 2.0.1 BIOS 2.0.252 Upgraded from 64MB to 128MB. I read that 7200.10 320gb Seagates were successful for a 4000 but neglected to read the part about the OS version required (or how to find what I was even running) and purchased the drives prematurely. :( I am looking for any .sup that will work. Contact me with any info I missed plz. Then I think I need to: 1. run the assist.exe to find the snap point to the proper .sup (since the upgrade patch apparently does not upgrade me) and update the SnapOS. 2. I then need to init the LBA size for the drives by getting their device id as klocwork mentioned: a) http://snapserver/config/debug b) input command: "co de info" 3. input command: "config devices format <device_number> /reinit" but replace <device_number> with the device number(s) identified by step 2b a) repeat step 3 for each device found in step 2b. b) Reboot the box, let it reinitialize each drive 4. I then need to http://snap/config?Func=DiskConfigureProSend to "Create a RAID 5" disk configuration. 5. Format the drives. 6. Create a share and access over TCP/IP. What are my chances I got half of this right? |

Re: Snap OS 3.4.805, anyone?
DC4, 1/2 not bad.
Do the os update through the admin page, do not use assist. Assist was used early on with OS v1 & 2. In v2 that added it to the admin page. Use the short cmd line "co de format xxxxx /reinit" . For some reason users have reported that the short cmd will work 100% of the time where the long is a hit and miss. Once the drive have been init and formated you can try to build a raid 5. The last one reported it was working ..... but taking a long time. Which to me indicates there is a problem. I think I recall the 250x4 only took 5 hrs to build. This being a software raid it is slower the HW. He has not reported back his capacity. It should not take days if everything is working correctly. |
