i'm thinking of making a site with faqs and information about snaps, like what memory fits in what unit, what features are on what os, methods for cloneing drives and upgrading snaps, basicly make our one mile thread more readible :)

I bought a 2200 off eBay that has no drives.

1. Please tell me if it will communicate over my network without drives.

2. Will it format the new drives automagically when installed or am I S.O.L.

3. what brand and type of drives suit this unit best.

I have all OS 3.x and 4.x and can do all this work but no communnications to the unit is not so good.

Suggestions as to whats wrong are appreciated.

1. Not sure if it will work without drives.....whats the point of turning it on if there are none anyway? Luckily the OS resides in flash so you don't have to worry about losiing the OS

2. It could format them depending on size, however you will most likely have to go to the debug page and run the command to reformat.

3. With OS 3 you have a size limit, with OS 4, you can fit really big drives...BUT.... large drives with hign RPM mean more heat and there are a few people who have cooked the cpu/fan because of big drives. So to be safe smaller drives at 5400 rpm, to live dangerously any size at 7200rpm

Out of curiosity how much did it cost with no drives in it?

do a full reset of the unit and make sure you have a dhcp server

once it boots , use assit to find your snap server

it will list its ip and allow you to flash it.

installing drives in it will allow it to automagicly format them (large drives take much longer)

or you can use the web util to make a raid out of them. your choice :)

After the reset routine 4 button pushes and all to completly reset it the thing does not format the drives I put in it (that were at one time in a 4100).

Aslo Assist does not find it on the network

Done all of this beofre I would ask you guys.

Dose it matter which version of assist

I purchased a Snap 2000 of of Ebay and installed 2 200gb seagate drives. I went into the debug page of the server:
http://ipaddress/config/debug
Type in the command box - config devices info

You should have a few drives listed with a number like 10006 or 10016

Type in the command box - config devices format 10006 /reinit and config devices format 10016 /reinit (replace numbers with whatever you get)

Reboot and wait till the new drive has been formatted

I have a snap 2000 and a snap 4100 both with new 120 gig hards drives and current OS and am familiar with the ins and outs of communicating to these servers.

The issue here is that the server can not be found on the network using assist even after a full reset the server

The following is a good way if you use DHCP for the server IP so you dont need to look for it you can call it by name, this is all well documented on Snapappliance.com

example my 2000 snap server number from the back panel is 554678 and http://snap554678 starts up the home page fine because I havent renamed the unit

This also works for my 4100 server

I hard code the IP for these units now,

but back to the 2200

This unit came wth no drives
I put 2 Deskstar 60gigs in this 2200, (they came from a 4100 ).

the 2200 did not format the drives and did not show up on the network even after looking with ASSIST and looking at my router to see if it shows up on the log and its doesnt appear in Network neighborhood in XP pro

I may just sell this the way I bought it with no drives to someone that can figure this all out.

Any suggestions are appreciated

ive never tried changing drives on my 2200's but i think i was reading before that some of them have the os on the drive. how about i take one apart and try?

2 new (or at least not used in a snap server) drives put in a 2200 and started up will solve wheter or not this unit is faulty.

whats the drive jumper settings on your present 2200 disk drives
CS or master or what

now my 2200 doesnt boot correctly ... i'll play with it tonight again...

if i cant get it for somereason i'll give up and sacrifice another one to try and get this to work (i have 9-10 of these 2200's)


i even went back to the original disks and it just blinks the system light , fun fun :)

i'll try reseting it a couple more times before i really give up on it for now

Snap 1000 Upgraded to OS 4.0
 

I just download the 4.0 OS upgrade that was mentioned earlier in this forum.

I installed it on my Snap 1000 model. The thing that changed that is not to my liking is that before I could have two hard drives running, utilizing Master/Slave. But now with the 4.0 upgrade it only sees one hard drive.

Does anyone know how I can revert back to 3.48 OS? The tools SNAP supplies don't let you downgrade. Or has anyone else had this problem?

I'm sure it's possible to downgrade. One thing that people are confused over is whether to use master/slave or cable select and Snap documentation does not help here at all. If you are using an 80 wire ribbon, the connector position determines the master or slave and the drive should be in cable select or CS. The black connector is master, the grey one is slave. A standard 40 wire ribbon uses master or slave on the drive. I wonder if the os update had any bios changes in it as well? Somebody here has dissected the sup file and I wonder if anyone can tell if there was a bios upgrade included in the section for the 1000 series? Anyone know better about this? Please speak up!

I have a Snap Server 1100 that will not power up. Is there a program that I can download for windows to retreive my information from the hard drive?

I still can't get the Java just to install on the new drive.

Any ideas, ive tried reinit it and formatted it.

If you have registered your snap on www.snapappliance.com you get things like bios upgrades for 3.4.803

Are the drives spinning up and the LEDs lit up and blinking normally? If "yes" then the network part may be bad. If "no" the problem is difficult to tell, could be the power supply, CPU, memory or anything. In either case the Snap 2000 you bought is likely a bad one.

I had similar experience several months ago when I bought from eBay a Snap 1000 with 30G drive but no transformer. The seller said he had no transformer to test it and therefore would not offer any warranty.

Upon reception I plugged in a 12V adapter from my other Sanp 1100 and nothing happened. I opened the Snap 1000 and found there wasn't any cable connecting to the hard drive!

On detail examination I found the hard drive was dead and the computer board had some components burnt. The seller had obviously put some dead components together and sell it as a good one.

Since I know some electronics I managed to find out a few problems on the computer board but I could not find the replacement components so effectively my Snap is still a dead one.

I joined this forum yesterday hoping to see if anyone has a dead Snap server for sell. Maybe I can then combine two dead ones into a working one. And as far as I know the 2000 uses the same circuit board as the 1000 so yours is one candidate. If you are interested please let me know.

I just got a day or two ago a Snap 1100, theres no drive or cd's with it, my intention being to put a seperately bought drive into it to store stuff on.

Having read the majority of posts in the thread, I grabbed all the files that misterbill kindly hosted on his FTP but now I have a question;

From those files how would i install SnapOS?

Any help/suggestions appreciated :)

Paul - If i cant get it to work I'd be be interested in selling it to you assuming the parts are compatible.

The 1100 and 1000 boards are compatible.
The files you downloaded are OS upgrade files I believe, and to install them you need a disk that already has an OS installed previously.
Alternatively if you can get hold of an image of the Sanp OS then you can start from scratch with a brand new disk.
I have a 3.4.805 OS image and it is about 40M in size and I can give you a copy if you want. If someone owns a FTP site I don't mind uploading it.
After you get the image you can use a disk copy program to restore the OS image to your new disk.
I highly recommend to use tomsrbrt boot disk because the program is just one floppy disk. It is free to download from http://www.toms.net/rb/
The tomsrbrt is effectively a micro version of linux but it is sufficient to the job we need. Use dd command to restore the image. Details of the procedure are mentioned in previous messages.
After the image is restored you will get a working Snap if your electronics are healthy.

Downgrade Snap OS
 

The only method I know is to overwrite the OS partition with a 3.4.80x image. You will lost all the setup information as well as all data in the share partition.
