Ive just made some discoveries. If there is one drive in a 2 drive machine, whichever is plugged into ide1 (not 2) is the primary drive, and you are allowed to install java extensions onto this. If not you can't. - Talk about Arkward.!!!

This is a request to people in the uk.

Has anyone got a dead beyond repair snap server that i could have the ide cables from? As one of mine has died/stopped working and i dont want to use a 45cm cable.

are you sure your drive is NOT an ata-133? I tried the maxtor (there are others) and got pretty much that same result. I've heard others using Samsung drives but if the drive is ata-133, there is a utility to run that steps the drive down to ata-100. I used the WD which is ata100 out of the box and it was fine.

Since I read that everyone was having trouble useing maxtor, all I have tried was WD

I have just reread the posts and realised you weren't talking to me!! However i have a maxtor and that works fine. Dunno if tis is ATA-133

Or does anyone know where i can buy a 2 plugged short ide cable?

You can always try making a cable. Radio shack may have the parts and a tool to crimp the connectors on. I used to make my own 50 pin SCSI flat cables, it's not that difficult. If R/S doesn't have it, I'm sure google will find a source.

Are you sure the drive is jumpered as the original was (master or Cable Select)? Mine is set as Master but I've heard others were set CS. And again, I used Dolly to clone the drive.

I really needed to change the FTP port on my snap server. I know you can change the HTTP port in the DEBUG window, but I don't see anything on FTP.

Any ideas?

I have 2 ata 133 maxtor 80gb drives with C/S with no problems. I just put a 2nd drive in, and it works fine

The simplest way to change the port will be to use a 3rd party java ftp client, except it nees porting. Int20H and my self are looking into it. There is someone who has one, but doesn't want to release his work as it took ages. Its up to him whether he releases it.

Just reading the Admin guide, adn it says it uses a variation of the FFS (Fast File System). Which is strange because when i asked Snap Support, i was told it was XFS.

Can i ask people which FTP sites are open for usage?

We need to break the 4100 137GB barrier!

I, too, would like to upgrade my 4100 to something larger than 4x120GB. However, I think it is unlikely unless someone can make a friend at Quantum / Snap Appliance / Adaptec to
1. learn what is causing the limit, and
2. get a workaround.

Since the Milpitas division is just around the corner from me, I am more than willing to pony up some greenbacks to liquor up an engineer or take him/her to the Kit Kat Club for entertainment. :evilaugh:

Inspired by earlier posts I just successfully upgraded the hdd on my Snap 1000.

FWIW, here's the details.

Model: 1000 series
Software: 3.4.803
Hardware: 3.1.1
BIOS: 2.1.363

Hard Disk: Quantum Fireball lct15
Capacity: 30GB nominal

New Disk: Hitachi 7K250 120GB UDMA100 7200 rpm 8MB cache

Here's the steps I used.

1. Backed up all the data from the Snap.

2. Connected to http://<snap1000>/config and formatted the disk.

3. Connected Quantum disk as Primary Master and Hitachi disk as Primary Slave. Used an 80 wire IDE cable connected to built in UDMA100 controller on Abit VP6 motherboard.

4. Booted Knoppix 3.7 from DVD-ROM drive.

5. From a terminal window

$ dmesg | grep hd

reports...
hda: QUANTUM etc.
hdb: HDS722512VLAT80 (HITACHI)

$ su
# dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb bs=1M

reports
28629+1 records in
28629+1 records out
30,020,272,128 bytes transferred in 2161 seconds (36 minutes)

Why the 1M block size for the dd command?
Earlier posts reported success with this!

Why dd the whole of the disk?
To reproduce all the file system metadata on the new disk.

6. Rejumpered the Hitachi as Master and fitted to Snap.

7. Booted Snap, checked a ping to its IP, and connect to http://<snap1000>/config.

Disk Utilities, View Disk Status showed disk capacity as about 29MB.

8. Connect to http://<snap1000>/config/debug and do

'config devices format 1000 /reinit'

then

'reboot'.

9. On the reboot the new disk formats and is then ready for use.

View Disk Status now shows 115,424 MB free.

10. Kept the old Quantum drive as a backup in case the OS is needed again. I also made a copy of the drive to an old Maxtor 5T040H4 just in case.


Nothing here that hasn't been on this forum before, except that the upgrade works with the Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 120GB drive. The Snap is now a lot faster and quieter, although the speed of data transfers is limited by the network interface. The best I've seen is 2MB/sec.

has anyone sucessfully upgraded a snap4100 with larger than 120gig drives?
I know yvette upgraded a 4000 to 1.2 TB but was/is running os 3.4.805(us).

Will upgrading to OS4 solve the lba48 issue (drives over 137gb). Im at the point where i need to max this box out or start looking for an alternative (buffalo linkstation TB version).
Storing HD video and dvd's takes up massive disc space

Couple of things:

Replacement of a Fan for a Snap Server 2200. I want to replace the noisy fan, i know what size fan i need, cos i can measure it. But i have a problem as the power connector currently used is a strange one that goes onto the power connectors. Anyone any experience of replacing this.

Dissasembly of the snap os files. I can't renemeber who disassembled them before, but whoever did could they let me know how they did it?

Snap Server 4100 LBA48 Intel chipset Question
 

I'm working on solving 137Gb limitation on 4100 snap server.
At this stage I'm collecting informations about hardware.
More specificaly I'm looking for somebody who has knowledge about Intel 82371 PIIX4 PCI Set Chip. We are all aware that this unit is fully capable of utilizing larger drives (over 137GB) I belive that with my knowledge of hardware and a software Guru's knowledge we can simply enable LBA48 support. Clarification on >120 on 1000
 

Dear All,

I'm somewhat unclear after reading all the old posts, on whether the 1000 can support disks larger than 120Gb. I realise this won't work out of the box, but the implication seems to be that with SnapOS above version 4 then this is ok. Can anyone confirm that they have done this and maybe which drive they used?

There was also some suggestion that the 1100 would work with 120>, but not the plain old 1000...
