Sweet Joe, this was a 24-way 32GB S80 in a bigass rack, didn't see it much it was in the 200ft by 200ft comp room which you needed special access to get into. One hell of a lot of machines there ;)

dantheman 01-11-2002 05:32 PM

*drool* I would love to have one of those, or the sunfire systems sun is putting together. THe biggest machine I have ever got to play with is a HP visual workstation with 2 500 risc processors and a gig of ram. It was slick.

Techguy 01-15-2002 11:48 AM

what about
COMPAQ NONSTOP™ HIMALAYA
http://www.compaq.com/products/servers/

My Fav part:
•Linear scalability to 4080 processors

Pyrotechnic 02-03-2002 06:05 PM

NOOOOOOOO !!!! NOT COMPAQ !!! www.compaqsucks.com :p :D

futRtrubL 02-15-2002 11:09 PM

I wish you had told me that 4 years ago. One huge horror story, but funny in a comedy of errors type way.

hm.. dual xeon if I didn't have to pay.... dual athlon mp if I had to pay (and, to bad I have to... :p)

or why not KTH's (swedish royal university) new computer... cool as hell, 80 clustred amd 1400MHz units with total 80GB RAM...

~560 Gflops...

and it's running LINUX!.... :)

Nice thinking

Too bad Intel bought the Alpha tech, otherwise we'd have some Alpha EV8 acction, but now it'll never see the light of day :(

Joe 02-23-2002 02:05 PM

Compaq retained a greater portion of DEC than anyone, I thought Intel couldnt own the Alpha processor technology due to FTC worries. Thats why the Alpha portion of DEC was spun off into Alpha Processor Inc ( API) which was backed by Samnsung, IBM, Fujitsu, and a few other companies.

sunblade 02-24-2002 01:09 PM

Really? Wow, that's new to me. I thought that Intel swallowed Alpha whole.

As far as other CPUs, a P4 Xeon (Prestonia) system wouldn't be too bad. It would have hyper threading, so it would be similar to 2 CPUs = 4 CPUs.

Joe 02-24-2002 02:28 PM

but 2 of those CPU's would cost more than 6 Athlon based chips!!

dantheman 02-24-2002 09:41 PM

I think I will stick to my ppc stuff in the rs/6000's I actually have access to those. I would love a set of MIPS processors though. I run one in my indigo2 and my o2. I would love to get them inside of a origin 3000 *drool*

ksw 02-25-2002 02:44 PM

Nicest thing ive played around whith was an Compaq PRO Liant 4500 w 8 P MMX 166mhz procesors. it probobly was XEON but i dunno. it was running NT4 server.
heck. not as fast as ur computers. but fastest thing ive played around whith. it had 512MB ram. well it was from 95. and had 4 hotswap 18.2GB scsi 15000rpm drives. i vould have gotten it for free. if i had been able to get some transport. well well.
heck. not as fast as ur computers. but Hey. im only a poor 15year old. what to do?

cristoff 03-13-2002 07:49 AM

man i thought my computer was fast... geeze... this is outta my league..... but if i had to go with a dream computer that would actually run.... well.... for gaming and be able to use xp pro... lol... anyways.... it would have to be the xeons.... with a perfect board if one exists to overclock them both to 3.5ghz...

Yo-DUH_87 03-15-2002 12:56 PM

Oc to 3.5 GHz? I read one article where cone crazy sweeds put a liquid nitrogin filled copper pot on top of their 1.6 GHz P4, and got it to 3.6, but that was liquid nitrogin!! Cold, cold, COLD!!

I like Anything Intel, AMD is cool, but all, but (almost) all the pro computer people use Intel! Now, I don't want to turn this into a flame thread (please, I've already done too many ;)), but I like pentium (never had any other, except a wimpy 200 AMD that stinks, I am working on turning it into a linux workstation :evilaugh: ).

Signing out...

Brad 03-15-2002 03:19 PM

I've had a 2.4 up to 3.2, just by changing the fsb to 133. It was using stock aircooling ( the intel cooler is a bit bigger than the ones for 2.2's )

Well if you really really want a Pentium I have a P200MMX that I'll trade you for an XP2000. :evilaugh:

Yo-DUH_87 03-15-2002 04:35 PM

Na, thanks M8 (or, M6 ;))! If I had thay kinda money, I'd be running my linux computer on a P4 2.6, OCed to a cozy 3.0!!

mx-6* 03-16-2002 07:50 AM

Or you could just buy a dual XP2100 system for less with twice the performance. But then again common sense insn't as common as you might think. ;)

ksw 03-16-2002 09:40 AM

gaah i cant understand how XBOX can lagg this much even when running a debugkit on an dual XP1900 whith 1024 DDR. i cant ****ing understand how the y can make a game lagg that much! (yes, i am a game beta-tester for a company that makes X-BOX games.) i cant ****ing understand how they do it!

Yo-DUH_87 03-16-2002 10:49 AM

Hey, do you guys read computer shopper? They did a dual of the procesors, and Intel won! The ONLY thing that the AMD had over the intel was that office productivity was better by one point!

Computer Shopper, guys! Read it!

Well lets see results from the .13 micron AMD CPU's on a REAL mobo made from ASUS, MSI , ABIT, or Epox instead of the Tyan. Results will be far different.

Brad 03-16-2002 04:49 PM

computer shopper, wow, a really reliable source. I could build a 2100+ system that would beat a similarily costed p4 system by 10% in every benchmark you could find. just send me the money

Yo-DUH_87 03-18-2002 09:28 AM

Similarly costed??

Forget about that! I do admit, Intel costs more. The reason AMD is so cheap, is because it is made by small hungry children in Afganistan, hand etched :evilaugh:

Amd is a "better buy." cheap, and comarible preformance (Intel is still ahead!!).

LOL! the die on a p4 is so big you'd think IT was hand etched!

Brad 03-31-2002 02:56 PM

if you really think amd gets their cpu's made in afghanistan, you are really really dumb

amd is cheaper, and right now about the same performance. when they introduce .13u they are likely to be ahead a bit.
