Brad, I finally understand what you meant about my "registry" settings not being set to idle down the cpu (when idle).
This was discussed when I had just gotten my water cool up and the idle temps were so close to full load. 34c-37c

I have this little reg hack and I downloaded wpcredit and wpcreditset and wanted to reset three registers, but I got cold feet. :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

Anyway, where can I go to get guidance on this? Below is a link to the tweak. Maybe I should start a new thread? On some other forum I recall a category entitled "Wpcredit" but I can no longer locate it. I think it may have been on the defunct MSI forum.

I wouldn't bother, why do you care about what your idle temps are, it's load temps that matter

there are a few auto zone places but there about 25km away from me (i have no car, Only public transportion:D)

i think most of the stores aren't listed in the yellowpages

NAPA is 10min (by bus) away from me so i might go there and buy one

but is $19(USD) for the caprice heater core, $19 for one in Canada??? i'm thinking it's more like $35(CDND)

and as for the fins; wouldi'n aluminum fins cool better than copper fins???

:D and i also so want one that can fit 2 120's (it's gonna be out side my case anyway) :D

I think the fins are alu. The core is copper, at least on most of the rads I've seen this is true.

PetDMC-

The chevy 75 will take two 120 MM fans as will the one I am using- ford econoline 85 heavy duty. Chevy has a 5/8" and a 3/4" inlet pipe the ford has both 5/8" another reason I selected it.

I chopped off the 5/8" nubs and soldered on 1/2" copper plumbing couplings with ease. They fit real nice! If you are going to use JB Weld and insert 1/2" hose barbs (brass) inside the heater core inlets the Chevy will work fine.

Oh, I can't tell you the exchange rate on the US / Canadian dollars. If you send me oh..., $1000.00 Canadian, I take it to the bank and let you know how many Yankee bucks I get in exchange! I am always here to help. :D

Long time OC'er, first time here.

PetDMC, I bought my Chevette core at a local wrecker for $20.

It has two 1/2" pipes after a simple mod. One is 5/8" or so, but it's just flared from the 1/2" pipe. Cut off the larger part, and you have 1/2" in and out. (@ 90 degrees to the core)

The only bad thing about wrecker cores is the CRAP that's in a 15 year old cooling system. I took it to the car wash, and pressure washed the fins and tanks. Then I ran my pump through it, taking turns on inlet/outlet, while shaking the thing...sand, rust etc. ran out of it for awhile, but it's good as new now.

The crap inside the heater core would worry me. Can you really get all the $&@t out of used cores?

Also wanted to add, the Chevette core will work with 4 80mm's 98% perfectly.My rad is mounted vertical. I have 2 at the top, side by side(exact width), and the bottom one(I need to get another 80 one of these days)is just hanging over the bottom about 10 mm.

The reason for 4(ok, 3:p ) 80 mm's...I use quiet no name case fans. I originally tried my sunon 120, with a duct, but the temps are the same, and the noise is gone this way. The 4th fan when I finally get around to getting it is only gonna help me too.

an aircompressor is seriously the best way. Also, if you block up the other outlet you can leak test it

Problem solved, bad camera angle ;) As others said, from that first pic it looked like the screws on that bracket went straight into the pipe.


As far as wcprset - what motherboard do you have? If it's a KT266a based board, the two bits are bit 1 of reg 0x95 (HALT detect) in combination with bit 7 of reg 0x92 (STPGNT# Detect). Both bits need to be set (be 1's).

Or, you can just get CPUCool from Podein's site and try it without having to mess with wcpredit/set if you are leery of diddling with it yourself.

You probably want to test it first on your system - depending upon your motherboard and sound card combo it may cause stuttering in your sound. (mainly audigy sound cards) Note also that some people have stability problems usings CPUCool (or at least the early versions of it). This is caused by an issue in the Athlon when using 0.5 multiplier settings (they don't wake up reliably from a HALT state with 0.5 multipliers). The fix for that is an even multiplier (i.e. 9.0 10.0 11.0 12.0)

Betters Jim's offer, will do it for 500 Canadian :=P
 

Let your fingers do the walking, lol. Seriously, call them on the phone and find out. Save yourself a bus trip. Heck, call the place 25km away too, you might find the price difference enough to make that longer bus trip.


* sighs * No But the temp difference isn't worth a large $$$ difference, nor is it worth taking a chance on an unknown, used heater core IMO. However, if you had a choice between two that were within a couple dollars of each other in price and were the same in all other aspects, then take the copper finned. The reason aluminum is used for fins is for weight reduction and ease of manufacturing.

Yeah-
(4) 80 MM fans wil work, they are 3 1/8" square. Four across no problem and a heavy 3/16" over hang top and bottom.

I never cleaned one, but I assume at some point you would want to flush it with something.

what about 92mm fans? 4 of them would fit without a problem either. As for cleaning it, use an air compressor to get most of the big stuff out, then a radiator wash type product to clean the smaller stuff out

Jim - that's basically the same tweak as is used on VIA chipsets, just different registers and values for the AMD chipset. Same comments, same cautions. The fact of the matter is you can NOT hurt anything by trying it. Worst thing that would happen is your system become unstable and crash. Reboot, don't do it again ;) CPUCool should also work with your motherboard.


PetDMC - point of reference, radiator repair shops use a heavy lye mixture to clean out radiators and heatcores. You can pick some up at your local grocery store most likely. Just be sure to hook a hose up to it (garden hose) and run pure water through it for 20 or 30 minutes afterwards if you use the lye to make sure you flush it completely out. (To clean it out with the lye, fill it with the lye mix and let it sit for 20 mins or so, shaking it every so often. But be careful, lye is quite caustic and if you get it on your skin, it can burn it. Wear rubber gloves and long sleeve shirt, avoid getting it anywhere near your eyes, and cap the inlet/outlet when you are shaking it so you don't splash yourself with it.) You can also use the lye mix with a scrub brush to clean the outside ;)

The problem is that I don' t understand exactly how to use the wpcredit and the wpcrset programs.

If you look at the link I provided above there is a "Wpcrset Register Edit" box illustrating values inside boxes labeled: "bus" "device" "function" "register" and "data". Well, I was unable to get to this point and I really don't know what all this stuff is. Also, it is apparant that more than one program is being used to change values and I am not certain as to which program does what and in what sequence.

So I am at the bottom level here, that's why I was trying to locate the Forum that had the topic "Wpcredit" so I could read there a while to gather some understanding.

I comprehend the basics of simply changing values in the Register. But I would like to know a little more about the use of these programs. It like anything else which you approach for the first time, it always looks harder than it really is, but you don't realize it until you have been through it. Heck I think watercooling is a walk in the park now, 5 months ago I thought you guys were all insane to try it!

I bought a chevette core brand new at Can Tire for $50. K&H rad says they got a whole bunch of brand new chevette cores for the same price. I wanted one that would fit inside my case, but since you are gonna hang outside, take what you can get, and as big as you can get...
