Atlantis

jtroutma 11-13-2002 12:45 AM

Ok guys,

Duely noted that the Atlantis line would be the idea block to use in this setup. Unfortunately, unless there is some goldy intervention, that block will not be available to me :)

Of the remaning blocks available in the US or DECENT shipping prices outside the US, which block would provide the best performance/look/low flow resistance?

Right now, The main canidates that I am leaning towards is the Gemini block, the Innova Block, and (morphing1's custom block :D )

Morphing1: I dont suppose you would be willing to part with another one of those blocks that you make for a decent price? :)

BTW thanks everyone for your input on this matter. Hopefully others will gain much wisdom from the advise in this thread, just as I have (if not more).

gmat 11-13-2002 05:37 AM

I'm surprised DDen block didnt get more votes, in the US *and* with decent shipping that would be a top candidate.

g.l.amour 11-13-2002 05:49 AM

too bad most of the aquacomputer range is designed for ultra small diameter tubing. ofcourse if u r using it parallel that is not too big a problem.

gmat 11-13-2002 05:54 AM

Exactly. 1/2" for the CPU block, in parallel with 3/8" twinplex for the GPU and NB.
I'm currently running them in serial and i'm not too impressed with the resulting flow... I have a Maze2 too, so the loop is kinda restrictive.
Anyhow i think 3/8" for GPU and NB blocks is fair and enough.

jtroutma 11-13-2002 03:11 PM

Gmat: Hence the reason why I started this thread. Just because they are the biggest supplier and their name is well reconized does NOT mean that they are the best :)

Seriously though, I probably would be happy with a DangerDen block (especially like those 45degree hose barbs; NEED some of them) but better safe than sorry.

bigben2k 11-13-2002 03:19 PM

Thanks to this thread, I now know how to adapt Radius to a VC.

I'm voting "Custom made by Forum member".

UPDATE:

Got around to pulling the HSF off my Radeon 9700. The "lip" is actually completely level with the core I found. I used a razor blade to test this. Decided to replace the thermal pad on the core with ASIII and now the HSF is VERY warm to the touch vs. barely luke warm before.

This is VERY encouraging for me! I have yet to pick a winner for my cooling needs but I am very happy that I dont have to pick one that takes care of the "lip" problem.

koslov 12-27-2002 04:05 PM

Well, if you really want performance...

Slap a big 'ol 40x40mm 172W pelt on there and send that GPU back into the ice age.

Cathar's ingenuity at work again. ;) http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/ima...ons/icon14.gif

jtroutma 12-27-2002 07:33 PM

I should post what has happened since I started this post.

I decided to purchase the Gemini GPU block from case-mod.com and used it on my Radeon 9700 immediately. I was instantly able to hit 380Mhz on the core with no voltage mods or pelt cooling.

Then while I was measuring the space between some surface mounts so I could custom fit some heatsinks to the memory, I shorted one of the resistors and that was the end of that card :(

RMAed the card and got a replacement within a week. Now with the GPU block installed, I can only hit 350Mhz core and 345Mhz memory

I plan on doing a voltage mod on the 9700 as soon as I can collect the parts and set asside time to test some more. I am shooting for 400+ core and 350 mem. I may even dabble into GPU pelting if I become so inclined :)

I must say that I do like the Gemini block but I am VERY disappointed about killing my original Radeon. Didnt think so at the time but that was a great OC. :(

koslov 12-27-2002 08:43 PM

I have the same GPU block, how did you mount it to the R9700? And how did you handle the 3/8" hose barbs?

Even more perplexing: How the hell are you going to use a pelt with that block?!

jtroutma 12-28-2002 08:02 PM

Mounting: the block fit perfectly on the core even with the "lip". Didnt have to do any modding or anything. Just removed the HSF and all the crap and applied some ASIII.

Barbs: simple USED THEM :) All the blocks in my system were already 3/8" and I just split the 1/2" line using a "T" into (2) 3/8" lines; one to the CPU and the other to the GPU. Worked fine for me.

Pelt: If I ever get that far, I will probably use a smaller pelt and then replace the plastic locking units with small screws and go at it that way. I am still in the "thinking" stage of that endeavor. I was looking into useing the Thermatake solution as the PSU and then a 56W pelt (if I can find one) or an 80W pelt.

Block works great though! Very happy with it.

DJ-Quack 12-28-2002 11:09 PM

I'd go for the Swiftech MCW-50T. It comes ready for use with a pelt, and does all the hard work for you. I had to ghetto rig my dangerden gpu block to fit with a pelt.

there's some more pics at http://djquack.no-ip.com/pelt/ .

GenGoku 06-26-2003 12:21 AM

have you decided which block to get? I'm in the same boat but looking at the GF4

Monty 06-26-2003 10:58 AM

I'm running a swifty MCW50 on my GF4 Ti4600 and I love it. It runs in parallel with my cpu block. 1/2" ID mainlines split to 3/8" inlet and outlet for both blocks and then back to 1/2" ID for return to my evap tower.

I like the swifty, cheap (bout $38), easy install and it's fairly low profile and out of the way. I only lose one PCI slot, which I did anyway with the fans that came with the card. Just my .02.

GenGoku 06-28-2003 03:09 AM

would you, or anyone else, happen to know if the MCW50 is also compatible with the GF4 TI4200 (Asylum)? The 4 holes are about 3mm diameter and 4cm apart (horiz/vert, center to center).

one thing i don't want to do is epoxy the thing to the gpu--a small chunk of it was already torn off when taking off the original HSF (i'm lucky there was no adverse affects *knocks on wood*)

MadHacker 06-28-2003 03:49 AM

Would anybody know if GeForce FX 5600 GPU has the same mounting style?
I'm looking into buying a Gainward FX PowerPack! Ultra/780 XP 256MB Professional.
Don't know what will fit on it water a waterblock.

GenGoku 06-28-2003 06:25 AM

i think the new dden maze4 gpu block was made for the FX series as well as the latest ATI, though i havent seen any reviews for it.

a few site say they have them for sale but not in stock.
even dden site says it is comming soon...
i may have to custom maek it myself... could be fun...
all i have is a dremmel kit...
mebe enough...
still have to wait till the card comes in...
ordering through work :)

GenGoku 06-28-2003 07:44 PM

i called up Cooltechnica a few weeks ago and they say they've had it for a while but were waiting for DDen's msrp price. it looks like it is available now.

I mean, we're not talking about any significant amount of heat here, so I would go with the block that has the smallest flow restriction.

We're not? 50-70C load isn't a significant amount? New GPU's are hotter than CPU's.

Yup thanks...
I can put that on my order list....

GenGoku 06-29-2003 02:34 AM

add $3 of something and use the free shipping coupon which ends on the 1st of July ('03). [edit] oops, just noticed your location is in canada. [/edit]

to answer my own question about the swiftech working on a gf4 ti4200 (asylum), i think it will after looking at a review's pictures. It looks to be the same, including that metal ring in the hole. i've already ordered it from cooltech and can let you guys know as soon as i get it (it'll arrive w/ the WW block. cooltech says i'm in the 2nd batch  )

Solarian League 07-01-2003 03:17 AM

when will daggerden maze4GPU-1 be for sale?

i'm interested in maybe acquating one. on daggerden site they stated on the maze4-1 and maze4gpu-1 that they can be both used without pelts, so would performance be about the same on these units. as if i say bought maze4?

anyway i am looking at those two mainly for furture expansion potentional, i probably for a while will stick with plain old vanna watercooling then eventually onice i reach a point where i need better cooling i will stick a couple of pelter in and do some ah... fixing up of GPU and mobo and be on my merry way.

Blackeagle 07-02-2003 10:33 PM

I'd say that we should also include Cathar's upcoming GFX block in this thread.

With the Cascade design It will have to be a real winner.

It may be the end of summer or early fall before we can get one though. Still I expect it will outperform all others named/shown here.

I suspect Cathar may have more trouble meeting demand for the GFX block than his latest CPU block. The WW is serious compition for the CPU block. But the GFX Cascade won't have that, it will for practical purposes have the field to it's self.
