I guess one of the things on the list should be all new drivers...

I upgraded to the latest version of the Cat. 4.7 and now it runs smoothly and without dying. Now, this game is freaky as hell, literally. I have never had the hair on the back of my neck stand up when playing games like when I'm playing doom 3....

HAL-9000 08-04-2004 12:29 AM

I'm playing Doom III now, I was one of the geeks hanging out at Fry's waiting for it to open this morning, and now I realize I need a new video card, plain and simple. My rig consists of a P-IV HT@3.6Ghz w/512MB DDR400 on a IC7-MAX platform. The video card is a GForce Ti4400.

Now, at 800x600 at medium quality, the game actually plays fine, quite pretty. But from my experience with the gameplay and from what I have read on the [H], I need a card with 256MB of RAM or upgrade isn't really worth it. The game won't even default to "Ultra Quality" unless the local VRAM is at least 512MB!

The issue is texture and lightsource loading. When a door opens exposing a different room for instance, the game needs to pull new textures'n lights to build the room. Since my card only has 128MB of RAM, the card needs to fetch the extra data from main memory through AGP, and then decompress it into the VRAM before displaying it. This makes the game momentarily freeze while this goes on. In the example listed above, it is particularly annoying as the game designers have a penchant for having baddies lunge at you when a door is opened. But it happens whenever you change scenery really. Aside from that, Doom III plays fine combined with the silicon in my rig.

What sucks about this is that no matter what video GPU you have, this problem will be prevalent unless you have at least 256MB of VRAM. No overclocking can solve the problem of too little physical memory on the card. More than anything, physical VRAM seems to be the bottleneck in my system, even running just a Ti4400 GPU. Now, for Ultra Quality at 16 by 12, well, I don't think they make a 512MB 6800 Ultra do they? If they do, that will be one spendy little piece of refined sand!

Yummy I got my copy at the store today, and life is good :)

pHaestus 08-04-2004 06:04 PM

Picked up some more RAM and my copy of Doom3 today. $70CAD at Futureshop but KOTOR was free with the game. I played probably 30 minutes and it is incredibly fun and polished. Running 1024 and medium quality on my system:

2300MHz Barton
1GB RAM
ATI 9700

I am really impressed with the game; you should go pick it up

Not for Doom3, am waiting on World of Warcraft and EQ2.

P4EE (possibly the 720 64 bit variant if it comes) (Sep-Oct)
512mb NV48 - might be known as the 6850 (Sep-Nov)
925XE (supposedly the 64bit variant of the 925X)
OCZ DDR2 667 EB Platinum 2gb
FX6800 water block - DD
6002A cpu block
120.3 radiator
2 Raptor 74's

That about covers it, more misc tidbits along the way, but definitely not a huge fan of Doom.

iroc409 08-12-2004 07:51 PM

so who's beat doom 3? just curious, i know some of you have to have. it's pretty sweet. my video card hates the game though :( keeps going into vpu reset.

oh yeah, and when hell gives you a chaingun, use it!

I hope my P 266 can handle D3. Onboard video and sound doesn't help out either for me. Do you guys know it that game is compatible with Windows 95?
Who am I kidding. I should just wait until it comes out on PS1.

:D wwhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaat!!!!!

mashie 08-14-2004 11:59 AM

I got my UK copy yesterday, did complete the game a week ago ;)

It is playing fine at 1600x1200 high quality on the 6800GT.

One thing though, videocard isn't everything, you really should consider upgrading to a 5.1 sound system as well...

KnightElite 08-26-2004 01:57 AM

I now did get a D3 upgrade. I got a 6800 GT, though it was not specifically for Doom3. I can play 1600x1200 high quality without problems.

pHaestus 08-26-2004 08:54 AM

Did you get your performance issues with the GT sorted out then KE?

KnightElite 08-26-2004 07:00 PM

Yeah, I did. I thought I had the newest chipset drivers, but was mistaken. Updating that, and DirectX fixed the problem.

Dgephri 08-26-2004 07:11 PM

my 5950 seems to do pretty well at 1280X1024 in ultra mode. I don't have any AA or AF on, but after level load it runs pretty smooth. Did anyone else try the .cfg file tweaks?

Arcturius 08-26-2004 10:09 PM

I'm playing currently @ 640x480 med qual. :D Good enough for me really. Honestly, does pitch black look that much better @ 1600x1200 than it does @ 640x480? Didn't think so. ;)

More seriously, I'm planning to OC my system again in the near future, and possibly swap memory with another one of my machines to have 1GB of XMS3200 dual channel. :D
Waiting for the RTV to cure on my pump/airtrap. :D :D

Just took the machine apart and cleaned it again (dust had plugged both the CPU and NB fans, stopped them completely... :( not a problem on the vidcard--sink only, no fan! ) and realized that I only had the ATX power connector run to my mobo. Will see how high I can clock it with the ATX12V connector plugged in...I've also had problems with graphical corruption (in 2D) and GPU resets...RMAing the card as we speak...back to GF3 Ti200 temporarily :(

Gaming machine:
Barton 2600+
AN7
512MB Corsair XMS 3200
GF3 Ti200 (will be Radeon 9600 np again soon!)
LSI U160
Seagate Cheetah 15K.3 OS disk
2x IBM 36Z15 soft RAID0 game disk
