There are plenty of other, more thermally optimal, protection options out there. A compressable foam ring around the perimeter of the CPU is the first thing I can think of. Sure others exist.

Well, as they say, GIGO. It turns out my baseline numbers were off....IT smartguardian does not report cpu diode temp....only system. MBM apparently has issues with my board as well. ntune monitor *does* seem to work.
Thus, I only have an 'after IHS removal' load temp of about 29C....no 'before' baseline (ambient is 20C now). I do seem to have picked up an extra 40MHz at the same voltage, which jibes with reports here. I'm was a bit reluctant to go above 1.675Vcore on this .09 core, but may push it anyway since it was only $76. |

I guess I got a lousy chip then. It's just as well, I just bought a used Newark to play with. This one will be on the market soon.
