You ought to focus on options to reduce that machining cost. I'm not sure you'd sell a lot at $75 ea. Definitely a one of, short run.

The only way to really get the costs down is to do a lot of them, like 500+ Not much I can do. Again, not doing this to make money.

Bummer. Isn't there a way to get the Delrin as a tube, instead of a rod / cylinder?

$75USD... I'd still buy one... but it would have to come with the fittings.

Gonna be hard for you to put everything together and sell them at that price if the person still needs to buy fittings, nobs and the plate.

The res will come with fittings, glass, oring, barbs, plugs. Just no mounting plates, those will be extra... I have decided to try to adapt the res to fit the aquatube mounts so that those that have aquatubes can just drop this one right in, a direct replacement so to speak.

Yeah, but i dont want to go that route... I dont want to have 2 end caps.

for gods sake ben, i said that in my post earlier...

The only way to make these cheaper is to design them cheaper - which doesnt have to mean inferior. I cant imagine theres much margins at ALL in watercooling gear, hence swiftechs recent moves to injection moulding + slitsaw design. Take a niche market, then add high machining time to what is essientally a low cost item... injection moulding makes 100% absolute sense really, when you're talking a sustainable company.

If you dont have access to 'at cost' machining, things get expensive pretty quickly... the thing is, there doesnt need to be much machining at all in these if dual endcaps were used, which realistically doesnt increase risk much.

Yeah, I know you did...

Looking up distributors for a related product, I came across these:
k-mac-plastics.net
portplastics.com
acetal-rod-sheet.com (dead?)
phenolic-sheets-rods-tubes.com
sdplastics.com
calsakplastics.com
professionalplastics.com
modernplastics.com
plasticdistribution.net

(Some of them are too pricey)

Wouldn't any of these work as well yet cost less???

Nylatron GSM, MD, GSMK or PA 66.

Etacovda 02-07-2006 09:38 PM

Re: Prototype Delrin 'DelRez' Reservoir *56K Warn!*

yep, but theres a lot of acetal fanboys around ;)

nearly any non-clear plastic would be fine, assuming it machines well.

Re: Prototype Delrin 'DelRez' Reservoir *56K Warn!*

Soft plastic is the key. PolyPropylene, ...

Re: Prototype Delrin 'DelRez' Reservoir *56K Warn!*

Yes but acetal is very nice to machine, has ultra low absorption, high tensil strength, and looks killer.

Etacovda 02-08-2006 01:52 AM

Re: Prototype Delrin 'DelRez' Reservoir *56K Warn!*

strength - not really required in the thickness/tolerances being dealt with, barr threading
low absorption - how is it compared to vinyl? because thats really the benchmark
machining - again, not huge amounts of detail so as long as it machines 'adequately' then yeah
looks - yep, it does look nice when machined right, but then, so do a lot of plastics.

Im sure theres a cheaper alternative out there, its just up to someone to find it.
Im absolutely certain with some work it could be made significantly cheaper.

Im not putting down the res, btw - sorry if it comes across that way.

Re: Prototype Delrin 'DelRez' Reservoir *56K Warn!*

After comparing Nylatron GSM to Delrin it seems both would be perfect but GSM costs about 1/2 the price. Both also look killer.

Definatly should look into that.

$75 is an adequate price IMHO. It's in the right ballpark of other reservoirs on the market.
I suppose that if i want to top mount it, i just need a blow hole of the right diameter, and 6 holes around it ? Would there be a nice way to refill it from top, like a screw cap ?

That's for the RES alone without fittings or the bay or plate mounts. It's a beautiful design and I totally want one... but I'm not convinced on Delrin being used as it seems like such a waste when comparable hard durable plastics are 1/2 the price.

I mainly say this in terms of making some dough from this project. Nik could easilly sell them for around $65 USD with all the fittings etc if he used a cheaper material such as GSM and still make a respectable profit. Would also be perfect to sell to OEM's at a reduced price while still pulling a profit (wholesale).

Nylatron GSM

Oh and a supplier that carries all plastics in rod form.
Professional Plastics

What Diameter do you need?

Yes that is the res but it has all the fittings, barbs, glass, oring etc etc included. The only piece not included is the mount plate, which AC and innovatek also sell seperately. I am using 3" diameter rod.

nikhsub1 02-08-2006 09:27 AM

Re: Prototype Delrin 'DelRez' Reservoir *56K Warn!*

Nylatron is $35/foot... in 3" diameter. I can get Acetal for the same price, no savings there.

Then in that case... were do I sign up?

From your supplier you could probably get Nylatron for less then that website then..;) It should be about $15-20USD less per foot.

Lol from MY supplier? I dont have a supplier lmfao. I buy all this crap retail like you would. I am looking into cheaper ways to get the acetal. But the material is NOT the expensive part. The labor is. I can get a 4 foot piece for $150 shipped. I can get 11, maybe 12 units out of 4 feet. At 11 units, that is $13.64 in acetal per piece.

If you want to get on the list to get one, shoot me a PM.
