Thanks bigben2k (sorry i totally missed it)..I would like to try this pump...although the cost is keeping my purchase at "maybe" :D
|
sounds interesting. i'm curious if these pumps will be practical in the long term for h2o ppl. if you end up getting an itch to experiment with it, i'd be curious to see if you can easily swap out that stock motor on the Jabsco for a hotter one. it looks like a common 540 size, so a "modified" R/C car motor might work.
|
Here is a picture of the pump in action. The elbows are 1/2 brass and the barbs are 3/8 as that is what my becooling jaged edge has.

Here's a screenshot with wucpuid running and mbm5 dash. Plus procooling in the backgorund :) (of course!)

hey stepback, how much was the pump, you never said, they have this thing at och, but dont buy it there.... im interested in knowing were to find this pump.... for how much.
|
You can get it here http://www.go2marine.com/frameset.js...d/51034F/&df=2 or just do a search for the part number (jabsco 59500-0012).

Stepback,
With the pump mounted in the case, do you notice any sort of hum or vibration when it is running (even the slightest bit)? The hum of my Eheim 1048 pump is seriously amplified by my case, so I'm looking for something as close to silent as possible. Plus a 12V hookup to the PSU is nice :) Also, what type of reducer would I need to go to 1/2" ID tubing? |
FYI, it goes for about $100.00 (one hundred).
|
wow thats one expensive little pump.. Its a dc motor driving the impeller magnet right? Wonder how long it will take the brushings to wear out
|
awesterink: You will need 3/4 to 1/2 reducers and the pump is every quiet. I can't hear it at all. While i was building my res and full system I had it screwed to my metal garage door and still couldn't hear it running. I have to a couple fingers on it to make sure it's still on.
Sanjuro: Yes. It a DC motor driving a magnetic coupler so the inpeller is in a sealed housing and there are no seals on the motor shaft. The mfg states that the brush life is 2500 hrs. |
Thanks. But 2500hrs? Wow...$100 for a pump that is rated to last about 100 days....hmmmm. Do you plan to replace the brushes?
|
I don't think it will wear out as quickly as the mfg thinks it will. I work as an instrument repair tech at a bio tech company. We have some 12v dc pumps that are rated to last for 1500 hrs. that have been on machines for over 5 years. These machines run almost 24/7/365 and pump some of the nastiest chemicals on the planet. We have more problems with seals going bad in the pump head than the motors burning out. And we just change the seals and reuse the pumps. I would have used one of these pumps for my water cooler but they only have 1/8 fittings and pump 5 to 30 mil a minute depending on the speed of the motor. One other problem with that pump is at full blast it draws 5 amps.
|
Very useful stuff, Stepback! Just one more question before I rush off to the shop: how hot does the pump run? Can you touch it after a couple of hours? Could you slap a thermistor on it and give ma a ballpark temperature reading?
|
Aint that just the same as the new overclockers hideout pump?
|
They look very similiar, I wonder...
|
Yes, they're the same thing. Moreover, the Jabsco 59500-0012 is also known as the Johnson CM10P7-1.
|
Yeah but can you get them any cheaper than $100.00?
|
What do you want, blood? :)
Nope, the prices for both makes of this pump are more or less the same: about $93,-- |
you said temps were about 6-8c lower w/ the new pump... what were you running b4?
....sidenote: It's hotter than hell here.. It's got to be about 100F here, w/ high humidity. Also, I've been running prime95 for a few hours, and so the rad on my PC is acting as a space heater for my house. My poor AC can't keep up! CPU is at 50C and holding. It idles at 42-44, depending on ambient. I guess if I find the next prime I'll be able to afford the electric bill.. :D |
euh... ECUPirate: a watercooled 486 DX2-66 running Windows XP?!?! Can you actually do that?
And dude, your water cooling parts cost more than the entire computer itself! :D |
hehehe... :) I just dig that sweet overclock, baby. ...that puter cost alot of bucks when I bought it, like 8 or 9 years ago. :)
It takes about 23 minutes to load Winxp on startup, and another 5 minutes to open internet explorer (damn MS bloatware), but after that, I'm home free. (I'm really in the 2.7Ghz range.. :) ) |
Johnson makes a pump virtually identical to the Jabsco (probably made by the same people, really). They also do a "bigger brother" which, although identical in size, has improved specs:
Continuously rated, the Johnson CM30P7-1 pump runs on 12V (just plug into your PSU), 2.2A, 26W; pumps 356 GPH / 22.5 l/min at 3ft. head. Dimensions are 18cm long by 5.5 cm width. The only problem is the price... $179,-- i.e. £130,-- :eeek: Regardless, I decided this will be the one for my project. Pics below: http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL59/7...4/15583195.jpg http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL59/7...4/15583179.jpg http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL59/7...4/15583172.jpg http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL59/7...4/15583190.jpg Questions, cooments? |
Nice! Wonder how quiet it will be..and how hot it will run!
|
That just ROCKS!!!
It's a little bigger then the jabsco. |
@ Awsterink: like the Jabsco the pump is DC magnetic drive, and as such there is neither gear noise nor that typical 50/60 Hz "buzz" you get in mains AC powered gear. It is absolutely quiet. Another user mounted his Jabsco on a metal garage door and even on this acoustic platform he had to put his hand on it to check that it was running.
I expect that, just as the Jabsco, it will run a bit hot, to the extent that keeping your hand on it will be uncomfortable, I guess about 50ºC. However two users have mounted their Jabsco inside the PC case with no adverse effect on case temperature., and no heat is passed on to the coolant. The thing weighs a reassuringly solid 0.6 kg (1.3 lb) by the way, and should be mounted with a 3 amp in-line fuse. What can I say? It's the daddy. Pity about the price... :( but perfection costs. |
Hmmm. Thanks for that info. I just put a larger reservoir in my WC setup and moved the reservoir to the top of the case, all in an effort to reduce air bubbles. But unfortunately it also seems to create more backpressure, because my Eheim started humming like crazy...
I may first try a large tank at the bottom (less lift, less backpressure), see how that goes. Otherwise, I'll be shelling out the big bucks for one of these babies! Thanks, Arjen |
It's a great pump. The only problem I had was how to connect it to 1/2" tubing, as the hose connectors are 20mm O/D (about 3/4") and 15mm I/D...
No problemo. Just drill a screw thread inside the pump connectors and screw in 3/8 NPT (or BSPT) to 1/2" barb insert fittings (with some teflon tape or some sealant) and presto! Adapted to 1/2" tubing. A neat and clean solution. |
Just ordered mine, now all I have to do is make a quick stop at the Shack to get the accessories.
|
Here some pics to show the barb installed:
