Sorry, just couldn't help my self...hate to see people being down...:)

Can you post a pic of the rear side and the inside look of the case? With all the smart people here, I'm pretty sure you'll come with something!

Plexy comes to mind for the backplate...clear or colored...and drill you already have...:p

as for the drugs...I just love that 3C stuff...have plenty of it here...:D

3C - CoffeeCigaretteChocolate...

and some good music too!

post a pic!

there we go, first pic is a full view of situation.

my plan was to remove the rivets holding the tray that holds the io ports and pci ports. then the whole thing would fall out i was thinking. that didn't happen, as u can maybe c that the tray is welded to the rest of the case.

so i started to get at it with the trusty old dremel, but still it didn't want to come off to easily. started to try and pry it open with a large flathead screwdriver, and now all steel was starting to look pretty bent. also i think the bottom of the pci tray is also welded to the motherboard tray. so basically, i wouldn't know how to get it done in a fashion that doesn't make it look like pieces of scrap metal.

Arcturius 10-10-2002 12:56 PM

The last pic looks like an ATX board would fit just perfect, if you drilled the right holes in the mobo tray--you'd just have an extra two slots and a gap at the bottom.

You could use those for the extra USB ports that always seem to get in the way. ;)

bigben2k 10-10-2002 01:04 PM

As gmat would say: "It's blowtorch time, muhaha!"

Seriously, the jig saw should fix you right up.

g.l.amour 10-10-2002 01:46 PM

well, @ arcturius. the io backpanel is 1/3 shorter than a normal atx io backpanel, so that is a no go. checked the official atx formfactor dimensions, and none of the holes are correct.

so as bigben2k says, blowtorch time. the mobo tray is worthless, and the pci + io backpanel needs to go to. :-(

so one looks at masses of dremeling/jigsawing, and some precise riveting welding, to not make it look too ghetto.

but as always, thx for the lots of input

what if...

you cut all the bent pieces like this:

along the red line, to have enough space for riveting...

now, first follow the link to see what I'm suggesting...

that should look like this (but nicer:p )

assuming you'll have hcores in the other side of the case, it would look something like this...(also nicer;) )

Puzzdre 10-10-2002 05:13 PM

You can use atx I/O backplate from your old case and rivet it (aligned with mobo) in the new case...or you can make one in plexy...

other ideas, anybody?

mfpmax 10-10-2002 06:08 PM

Have you put a motherboard in there to see where everything will liine up?

g.l.amour 10-11-2002 04:39 AM

thx for the input.

what u suggest puzzdre, is what i was first aiming for. i got a little pissed when i noticed it was not only rivets holding it together, but also welding spots.

eventually what might be easy, is to buy a cheap small narrow case, and put it in the original case as a whole. that might be even easier to realise.

problem is, i do'nt know if feel like working this case for weeks on end...

MadDogMe 10-11-2002 04:50 AM

You should be able to drill out the spotwelds easy enough.

It looks like an ATX mobo would fit no problem if you drilled the holes yourself!. is that oblong hole the right size for the I/O, serial, ect, ports?.

Puzzdre 10-11-2002 05:36 AM

That case is a gem...I should say it's worth the effort.

I'm even considering buying two smaller cases and putting 'em together...

Your idea of putting smaller case inside of this one seems good and easy enough, just take good measurements...;)

g.l.amour 10-11-2002 05:51 AM

heheh, every time i return to this thread i get new hopes on returning to modding this case. i should stop being a w4nk0r and just get on with it.

thx all, specially puzzdre for all the drawings and lending your brain. ;-)

Puzzdre 10-11-2002 09:50 AM

what brain???

good luck!

ok, on with the show, i might as well transform this thread in procooling's long awaited new article.
progression:

i recently found this great new cheap pc-parts shop in the hood; remembered that last time i picked up a new amdxp (i am amd's saviour, i burn up about 3 cpu's a year), there were some damaged cases outside at their rubish. asked em if i could have one, they said no prob. the front bezel was damaged, and no side panel. great!!! saves me 50€ on a case with psu, i only need back/bottom/mobo tray from.

voilĂ*

this is what i actually need from the case:

this should cover the dremelwork on the case to be, so i can fit the smaller case's back/bottom/mobo tray into it.

Man....I don't know...I think you coulda fit an ATX mobo in that mug. Were you trying to mount it upside down :D.

jiehaaaa i never thought it would work, but let's take a look at the result.

lol ambient, i think i can fit 3 full size atx boards in the mobo compartment; when i get my full length meter back, i will take some measurements on this mf, believe me, it is fookin huge.

and some more atx goodness, this time lets tackle it from the behind... ;-)

really, really, really, enormous thx to all that helped to think along on this one. days ago i was considering buying some case i didn't even want, and would have payed upto 250$ to get a size that could fit multiple radiators.

mfpmax 10-11-2002 03:48 PM

I think we have a case for DH4 or DH5 :D

ambient 10-11-2002 03:52 PM

looks good......you did a good job.

g.l.amour 10-11-2002 03:53 PM

thx. i can't believe i was ready to toss this case at the junkyard. now that it became possible to mount a normal motherboard, it becomes more an more clear to me that this case eats the YY cubes i was wanting to get, for breakfast. doesn't look too clean from the behind, but thats not all that important.

now all i got left is make a PSU holder in the other compartment. and make holders for about 3 radiators, the titan, bigmomma, and my trusty ol' hayden rad. too bad i'm not into pelts or phase change cooling, because even that would be no problem to fit extra into this case.

bigben2k 10-11-2002 04:00 PM

Kewl:cool:

That's the kind of mod that gets me thinking about fitting two mobos, back-to-front, with a built-in KVM switch!

g.l.amour 10-11-2002 04:22 PM

i forgot to ask;

@ ambient,

the last pic u posted of your modded case, all the paint seems to be removed, in a way that it even looks like u got an alu case. how did u get it to look that good. prolly got to it with some crazy powertools. like the look of it alot though.

Puzzdre 10-11-2002 04:29 PM

Woah, you did THE job !!!!!!!

GO GO GO !!!
