Those that use Mozilla and it's derivatives, go patch yer box.
6 of these half a dozen of the other... |
The .xpi patch is both slick and scary...

I'm and Opera kinda guy myself, but IE is handy for all the sites that are very IE only.

Opera.
Has everything i want. Sticking with the original. |
IE, because every time I read of how seldom one needs to switch back to IE so a page can be viewed, I picture myself starting up multiple browsers and spending the evening toggling between them... what a waste of time.
Or should I just accept distorted content because the viewer has neat features? A question: Do alternate browsers like Firefox reliably display a warning when pages aren't processed correctly? If yes, I will try one. |
OK, after the god know how may times I get spy wear I CANNOT get rid of wthout a reinstall on IE... such as every 10min it pops up with a porn search engine tool.
Firefox is the best alternative to IE out there hands down... have IE for emergancies and stuff (such as windows update) but for general web brousing and stuff Firefox beats it all. I used to be a big opera fan but with is tendancy to display some sites "wrong" and a few other niggleing problems I quit it and returned to IE... been searchg for a good alternative ever since... Firefox seems to be it. Sure you have the slow boot up time and there is a daleya opening the program but once you are inand brousing it is much faster. |
I've used IE for years and had 3 or 4 real spyware infiltrations - this only because another user naively downloaded it. Besides that I just get cookies.
But I'm curious about alternate browsers. I wish some people who posted "Brand X, waaay better, hands down." would qualify or quantify their statements. State the advantages. |
I've tried mozilla, slimbrowser, and opera (opera properly messed up my computer when i tried to uninstall it) and out of all of them i have to take my hat off to firefox, it's easy to use and the pluggins for it aren't half bad.

Here is a firefox tip:
You can search for links by just typing the keyword while Firefox is in focus. You can also search for non-link text by adding a "/" (no quotes) before typing. Neat! |
That is pretty neat ;). I typed /neat, and it found the word neat in your post immediately ;).
|
And then you can use "F3" to find the next neat :)

Firefox
damn, 1. The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters. well that solves that... |
Firefox and the mouse gestures pluging. I like it.
Won't use IE if I can't help it. |
opera, love mose gestures, lots of tabs, RSS reader, etc
|
same exact boat as you ... but MyIE2 had some features I really liked :)

mozilla, umm,er actually Firefox. 1st post here, nice to be here too, glad I found these forums. :)

Firefox at home and at work. I use IE when I run across a site that forces me. Once you get used to tabbed browsing you'll never go back. Also, the google search by default is great.
|
Did anyone try the "AdBlock" extension, for Mozilla? You can simply right-click on a banner to forever block it.
I'm trying it out now. This'll come in handy on OC and PCPER (the old AMDMB) :D |
Adblock is good stuff. There's a similar extension for flash.
|
Still using IE. I think it has something to do with the fact that I have everything saved in IE, and don't want to bother porting it to Firefox. I also don't really find the tabbed browsing that useful, or any of the other features. The Google Toolbar handles popups and searching for me, and that's good enough. I've also got my computer doing spyware/virus/adware scans nightly, and it automatically fixes things, so it's not a big deal.
|
Firefox can automatically import all your bookmarks, from IE (as well as other browsers).
|
You generally dont find tabbed browsing useful until you've used firefox for a while - I couldnt use anything else now, tabbed browsing is too convieniant, especially when you're doing some kind of research work, and want to have 10 pages open at once, along with open office, photoshop, freehand and solidworks. 15 things in your system bar isnt pretty at 1024x768- 6 is much more managable.
|
Yep. When I go through eBay for testing equipment, I need multiple screens to look up the specs of a particular product: tabbed browsing makes it much, much easier.
|
I've used the tabbed browsing, and I find that I tend to lose tabs, and forget about them, whereas if I have them arrayed in the task bar they are easier to find. I also have a widescreen, meaning more programs fit nicely.

IE vs firefox

Bottom line....let's just give Microsoft the credit when it comes to the browser and lets all start using it, and only it! It's FREE! As for their other products like Office, go ahead.....use alternatives. I'm now using openeoffice because I hate the fact that Microsoft rips us all off with their price. thanks |
i will only get back to IE when it gets tabbed.

If you guys haven't tried Opera since version7 came out, you really really really need to give it another chance. Its much improved, and I'd say 99% of the bugs have been fixed. And for the rare occasion when you do experience something weird, you can just pop open IE or FF right quick.
I started using it around late5.x/early6.x. IMO, it is the best browser. All the "cool new and unique" features that FF now has, such as integrated google search, tabs, popup blocker, mouse gestures, etc. were all implemented on Opera before FF even existed. IMO the popup blocker in FF is inferior to Opera. Also, FF doesn't auto save your session, which is lame. As for the add bar, it really isn't noticeable. Its just a small google text add. All of the top bars put together take up as much space as the default IE setup. Supergeek, mouse gestures are like teh sex. It's awkward at first, but once you get the hang of it, you wont be able to live without them. If I'm ever stuck using a computer w/o gestures, I still do them. Like a person used to driving stick reaches for the shifter even if hes driving an auto car. |
I currently use IE, launching out of an expanding folder tree in my taskbar (thus no home page). I usually have multiple instances open, like tabs, and don't notice a drain on system resources.
"All of the top bars put together take up as much space as the default IE setup." Well, that's something I appretiate. I want to try the browser with the largest viewing pane. Which is it? I assume "tabs" just means a second taskbar. |
