Well I am procuring a 4th 750gb drive and it should be here next week. I will wait and do a 4x750 gb for 3TB Raw and about 2.1TB of usable disk space. Thanks for the tip Blue but lucky for me I have been dealing with RAID for years.

Do you know if the Guardian OS will report if any hardware has changed from factory? Like differnet size drives?

It did not with my 120gig, that I used to get mine booted.

He's wondering if the Guardian OS will complain if you install larger drives then what came in the system. and report it to Adaptec.

so far so good. Two 750's do Raid 0 and 1 just fine. Takes 4 hours to rebuild a RAID1
set of the 750's. My 4500 only has 512mb of RAM so i am gonna go out on a limb here and say if i bump it to 2GB it would rebuild faster.

My other 2 750's should be here soon.

The guardian units use the EEC ram.

On the Guardian Units, all models were bumped up on CPU and RAM as the drive capacity increased. But most showed the 512 was a good number. But with all the cache on the drives. I'm looking at turing it off. To minimize superblock damage. This way the cache will be flushed, cleanly.

There are utilities for doing this, but not sure it will work with this setup though. But will check on it. It's part of smart data option/controls.

Well I have been a little busy but I have more results of my 4500 upgrade. I have successfully upgraded a 4500 to 4x750GB Seagate drives.

They went into a RAID5 with no problem at all. It took about 9 hours for it to re-sync , I have copied about 1TB of data to it and am gonna test re-build time and see how it goes.

Sweet.

Please do some simulate drive failures to see how the recovery works. Do this while writing large chunks of data. It always better to no ahead of time, than cruch time.

Just think, with a exp unit you could end up with 6 TB of usable space. The only problem is backing the data up.

Well spent today testing, I simulated a power outage and then a individual drive failure to the unit while writing 5GB files and a bunch of MP3 at the same time. Both times the unit worked flawlessly and after a 9hr re-sync all is well again.

Guess its time to hook it to my spare Smart-UPS configure it to shutdown when it goes onto battery when a power outage occurs and put it into use here at home.

Anyone else have any questions?

What UPS unit are you using to send the shutdown cmds with? Or are you using a PC to send the cmds. I have been looking to see which model will work without a pc online to send the cmd. One that connect directly to the network.

If you were to remove a drive and re-mount it 1 min later with no activity, will the unit go through a re-sync, or will it join the set?

Any APC Smart-UPS with a Network Management card will send the commands to the Snap4500 to shutdown when power loss occurs.

If you remove a drive and then remount it it has to re-build like any RAID set would.

Those thinks are almost as expensive as the Smart-UPS units by APC. Since the 4500 has serial and USB could they be used to access the UPS unit ???

That better. Why can't the 4500 use one of it's usb or serial port to comunicate to the UPS.

because there is no such configuration in the Guardian OS. In the OS under UPS you configure it to point at the APC Management Card IP and the UPS tells the unit to shutdown.

Thanks, I was just looking for a easy/cheap way out.

But with the managemnet card I could shutdown my 2200 too. Right it does support multiple units?

Will it shut down a 2000? They have a hard switch, so power is always there until the switch is physically hit. All the newer units have soft-switches.
