Um. You cant solder aluminum. You have to use a special braze for aluminum...

I have some Aluminum rods, and some Alumite solder, but it still dosn't work the way I would like it to, not even close to epoxy. I did successfully solder the aluminum block on top(I had to mill it off) but I could not get the cover to bond. I thought some car radiators where aluminum and they where soldered together?

Oh well, dosn't matter now anyway. I am going to try the O ring setup. Being my job has screwed up my plans I have more time to experiment.

As I have all the equipment in the world at work to aluminum weld it dosn't do me much good here. And I don't have a place to store or use a welder here.

I don't really want to weld them on anymore anyway. I like the removable top idea. Just going to set me back a few weeks. And then I will probably working again anyway so it really doesn't matter.:(

I am going to try and get as many do it yourself projects done before then. I think I will make my site a guide site on how to build your own stuff. I will show people how to make fan controllers, water cooling systems, ect.... Being I am not really in this for the money anyway.

Got lots of work to do before I have to go back to work.:)

hehe, how many people have a welder?

Butcher 01-08-2002 10:56 PM

Sure you can, it's just harder. You can't solder Al to Cu though.

I have a welder :) cant do aluminum to well but I can do 1/4" steel.

I used to do fabrication on vehicles/bodywork/customizing. I could make anything lay flat on the ground for a 10 pack of tacos!

Butcher 01-09-2002 12:40 AM

Yeah, TIG weld the tops of your Al blocks on, that's be secure... hell you'd have to melt the block to get it off practically ;)

Brad 01-09-2002 04:43 PM

LC, weld http://www.apple.com/imac to the ground, make the ****er perfectly flat

:D

Well the Epoxy idea is out the window!!! I was just up at webmedic's place and was tightening down the barbs on my test unit I was giving him and I didn't get the holes quite lined up and the barb pushed against the main block and pulled the top off!!!

Oh well, I got a few other things I am going to try anyway. The epoxy on the main block held it just didn't stick to the top peice. I should have applied it to both sides before putting it together. But this is just one example of how Epoxy can go wrong. There are a dozen other things that can easily make the top pop off.

Anyway I am going with the removable top idea anyway. I want to be able to clean the thing after a few months if need be!!!

To many ideas right now. I need to get to the fan controller project first so I have some content on my new site.:)

I modified the design again after you left. I'll try to post a picture of it somewere if you would like to see it.

Sure.

Brad 01-09-2002 05:51 PM

you might need screws or something then to hold it down instead of epoxy then. If I had the top come off on my block, I would not be happy

webmedic 01-09-2002 07:52 PM

Heres the picture.

I am going to add screws and use a O ring system instead.

Brad 01-09-2002 08:45 PM

yeah, screws don't come undone too easily. I'd still use the epoxy though..
