Sorry bout beating you out on the bidding there bigdawginva :D

But it looks like you got 2 more chances to get one.......

koslov 11-14-2002 08:33 PM

You guys better have some monstrous pumps for those giants... the pressure drop is astronomical. I am happier with the 4120, fits in my case, has good lucks, and very good performance(compared to HCs). Haven't actually hooked it up yet, waiting to get a block.

Airspirit, can I recommend getting 2 AC caravels, then using a ceiling fan controller to control noise? Works well for me, at the lowest setting, there is only noise from the fan bearings. Very quiet, but not silent.

OT: Is there any way to reduce bearing noise? Can I rebalance them?

airspirit 11-14-2002 09:06 PM

My 350 GPH pump is doing awesome ... better than through my BIX. I don't think I'll have flow problems after all. The fittings were a b!tch to buy, though.

You're incorrect.

Over what? What you used to have? Over the 6320? If so, did you have a 6320 for comparison? Or are you just pleased with the 4120?

Then how did you acquire this information?

koslov 11-14-2002 11:04 PM

Lytron PDFs. I assumed they were common knowledge by now, sorry 'bout that. Here's a link: http://www.lytron.com/reg/files/2003...gers_44-51.pdf You will need to create a login to access it.

PS: Why did you edit out your previous post?

I'm not sure I understand the connection.

Well to address your concerns regarding the 6320 several of us have gotten.......I do have a killer pump......470 gph Iwaki MD20 and the 6320 fits IN my case :D

In my config I am going to use 2 48v volt 10" comair-rotron fans running at 24v as I bought a 4 amp 24v PS from MPJA.com for $3.95 I am currently running a Modine microchannel rad about the size of your 4000 series with 2 24v rotrons @ 12v and like you only have the bearing noise.......Hopefully the 48's at 24 will be the same. I dont know of anything that you can do for the bearing noise but on mine it is so quiet I have to put my ear close to the case to hear them......

Really? A search reveals even more than that now......I count 6 of them now up for auction from the same place.......I would be willing to bet some folks are going to get some phenomenal deals on them even better than the $51 I paid.

airspirit 11-15-2002 12:18 AM

What I meant was that I seem to be getting better flow through the Lytron 6320 than through my BIX, and this using a 350 GPH Danner Supreme pump. For all the doomsayers out there, this means I'm getting less resistance than from the BIX, which means that my project will be fine. This doesn't seem to give near the resistance the web site says it will. I don't have solid numbers on that, but hooking one rad up after the other demonstrated the flow difference, and the Lytron beat out the BIX hands down.

UnrealREality 11-17-2002 12:27 PM

would a single 120mm sunnon do fine on a 4120?

Ah, and I see it was hmale that won it. I wonder what he'll be up to next?:D . Nice to see your project comming along airspirit. I too have been in the process of building an external cooler, but was looking for the right rad. I was just going to go with the standared 2 chevette rad setup, but I think I'll be picking up one of those bad boys.

airspirit 11-17-2002 05:02 PM

This thing cools like a mother, and doesn't have the flow restriction that the Lytron site said it would. I'm using a 350 GPH pump and even with a net height of over 3.5 ft and numerous 90s and such, I am still getting much better cooling than through a BIX (and this is with a weak ass desk fan blowing on the radiator, so with good fans it would do better). These things are sweet. Check out my thread on the Lytron 37deg. JIC fittings though, since you can either cut off the fittings that come with the thing, or pay out the ass for fittings that are compatible. Just a warning.

On a personal note, if you're ever through Moscow and want to take a look at my psycho project with that radiator, just let me know and you're more than welcome. This is definitely something you don't see every day.

That's why I indicated you were incorrect. Instead of 2 there were 6. And since the last one went for $31 I would agree with your assumption. I was glad to see the glut of them after yours went for $51 since I'm not willing to pay for than $30 for a rad I really don't need and still haven't determined how I'll accomodate it's size.

Hey airspirit I may just have to take you up on that. I would love to see that thing in action:D

airspirit 11-17-2002 07:38 PM

Let me know when. Just give me some warning so I can give you directions.

FRAGN'STIEN 11-17-2002 08:08 PM

You got it;)

airspirit 11-17-2002 10:03 PM

Heh, and I just got two Comair Rotron Caravel 550 CFM fans for it for just under $40. Mwahahaha! I don't think I'll have any problem letting that radiator breathe. I just have to find a way to cut the fan holes.

koslov 11-17-2002 10:26 PM

$40 for both?? That's a great deal, assuming they are new. I got my Caravel for about $60. I would be wary of used ones because those fans do tend to die eventually, and used ones often come from harsh industrial environments. You never know what shape the bearings are in.

Hope you got good ones, and when are we gonna see some pics of this monstrosity?? ;)

airspirit 11-17-2002 10:52 PM

These are new in factory boxes, sold surplus. These are also the models with the chromey looking fan guards on them. Schweet deal, I think.

airspirit 11-17-2002 10:53 PM

I've got an article cooking. I'll have pictures attached to a rough draft of it tomorrow, and I'll post the links for everyone to view and give input, before I put my first PC on permanently.

koslov 11-18-2002 01:15 AM

Wow, that is an awesome deal. I wish mine came with a fan grill! I'd never thought I'd need it until my mouse wire got stuck in the blades during a BF1942 match!!

Was this eBay auction or can you let us in on where you stole these suckers?;)

airspirit 11-18-2002 08:45 AM

It was Ebay ... I bought them from a user called RadioTr. The first cost 21.50, and the second (outside of the auction, was going to be a seperate auction) cost 18.00 plus the extra shipping. I have it all being shipped cross country via UPS for about $50 total.

I may have extra fan grills when I'm done. I only need them on the outside surface, and these have both the inside and outside grills. I may be able to hook you up with a pair, depending on how this turns out (i.e., how close water-filled hoses get to my spinning fan blades!).

Lytron 4120

I'll take some better pics later, (I just received it today) that pic is from the auction. This came with 2 120mm AC fans (Nidec Alpha V's) and has 3/8" ID connections. Stainless steel tubing and copper fins. Brand new, $54 shipped ($352 retail).

BTW, if you need a Comair Rotron Caravel to slap on that thing (that's the fan they designed the mounts for), I have one for sale.

Koslov, sorry to intrude but my 4121 today and, of course, no power cords for the fans. Any suggestions? What are you using? Anyone with suggestions for acquiring powercords for these fans? I had planned on a 1/2" system for my first system but I may just use this as is with its 3/8" fittings and a used GeminiCool 3/8" fittings I traded for and see how it performs.

koslov 11-20-2002 08:00 PM

Look to see if you can't find the right plugs at Radio Shack for those terminals. Then buy some low gauge wire, crimp it to the plugs, and connect the other ends to a power cord. You can usually find power cords with bare leads at the hardware store.

airspirit 11-20-2002 09:41 PM

I just realized that in the setup I have with just one computer on the cooling loop, it doesn't matter whether or not my desk fan is blowing across the radiator. It cools equally well both ways. I'm looking forward to seeing what difference the Caravels make. The loudest component in my system currently is my HDD. I can't hear my case fans running at all, and I have 4 of them (2x80mm@5V->in, 2x80mm@temp controlled V->out through PSU (Antec Truepower 480).

This 6320 would be perfect for somebody trying to make a silent PC, if they could accomodate the size. Most of mine isn't open to air flow and I'm still cooling better fanless than with a BIX.

bigdawginva 11-20-2002 10:58 PM

Thanks for the info Koslov.

Man, someone paid $152.50 for one tonight. I should feel good about my $71 one. That's more than I paid for the MCS. Gotta love Ebay sometimes.

bigdawginva 11-21-2002 04:55 AM

I also emailed Nidec for a source for the power cords as well. These are TA450AC Ball Bearing Fans 105cfm 120mm 3200rpm. I will probably swap them out for Panaflo L1As until I can rig or purchase a power cord.

airspirit 11-21-2002 02:37 PM

Do you know how to solder? Go to a hardware store, buy a three prong plug for $0.49, then go to Radio Haxor and buy some medium gauge wire. Solder the sucker up and you're all set. For added fun, put in a fan controller inline. Total project cost, with controller: $14.

bigdawginva 11-21-2002 03:09 PM

Will do, thanks. Well, 3 Lytron items for $238.35. Can't complain. Time to start working on my first WC project.
