we are doin pretty well considering we have ~24 active folders and we started F@H in sept or so. Were on page 2 (top 200) on EOC stats

Belenar 01-09-2005 02:06 AM

Place 180

Yes, we're doing great, considering the number of folders that are actively folding. But our rise to the top is slowing down... Which means we needs more folders!
How come not even 40 of us are folding on a forum with a few thousends of registered members?

Anyways, keep up the good work, we'll make it into the top 100 one day, i'm sure.

My first unit

Having found out about ProCooling's F@H team I thought I'd better swap over from SETI. I've not got the quickest computer :( but every little helps I guess... Perhaps I can overclock it a bit or build a quicker one>>>
What would be the best system for getting lots of FLOPS (I guess this is what F@H requires?). Something like a dual Opteron / dual Xeon? I want to build something quick cos I used to run finite volume CFD codes years ago at Uni and want to brush up on my programming and go back to College so I can get back into it... :D

We do need more folders. We should be near the top 100 right now and we aren't yet. We're only #160.

According to the Extreme Overclockers Overtake chart, we won't break into the Top 100 for about 6 months. That's disappointing.

I have my work machine(P4-2.4) folding again as well as my wife's machine(p4 2.8)...
just got my mom's machine fold as well(p4 3.0).
had mine folding as well but it overheated and crashed... gota get my watercooling rig back up and running...

Belenar 02-17-2005 04:03 PM

Tnx for bumping the topic again ...
We definitely need some signups. you all WANT to see Procooling in that top 100 list, don't you? You all feel the NEED to make it happen. You WANT to show THE WORLD that Procooling is superior...

Are my hypnotic skills kicking into action yet? ... too bad

jman1310 02-18-2005 01:58 AM

just joined the team
anyone know if folding is optimized for hyper-threading?
is it possible to run 2 instances of folding (one on each cpu) like in prime95?
because otherwise i'm gonna run folding at below normal priority and
2 prime95s at low priority
doing that; folding is getting 50% (25% on each cpu) and each prime95 is getting a varying portion of the remainder

mjgent 02-18-2005 10:11 AM

Actually, I think hyper-threading is optimized for folding. Everything I've read states that a hyper-threading cpu with two instances of folding@home has the best performance (read WU per day).
You can also set priority and cpu % usuage for each instance. The client versions running as a service seem to work the best. I hope this helps.

Nickd 02-18-2005 12:37 PM

Can a hyper-threading P4 run two work units simultaneously then? I read the article on F@H about a dual processor machine being able to run two instances, as long as you set the two root directories differently etc but it never even crossed my mind to try to run two on a single HTd CPU. I've got GBs or Ram so that shouldn't be a problem and even if it was I'd just stick some more in...
If I can run two F@H clients simultaneously where can I find out how to do it?
thanks, Nick

You also have to set seperate machine IDs or could end up doing the same one on each and only will credit as 1.

how do you set up sepearte machine ID's?

Chew_Toy 02-18-2005 03:24 PM

Durring the initial setup answer yes to the advanced options and it will ask. Just pick a number between 1 and 8.
I am not 100% sure but you could probably add the line "machineid=1" to your client.cfg with 1 being equal to any number 1~8.

I'll try that this weekend :)

Chew_Toy 02-18-2005 04:06 PM

Also to get to setup you can use the "-config" flag.

mjgent 02-18-2005 09:27 PM

And if anyone needs help setting up shortcuts, dual instances, machine IDs, etc. just ask. I'm sure there are a few of us that can help.

OK I tried to set up 2 clients but when i run the second one i get this message
Code:

There is already another Folding@Home running.
Only one copy may be run at a time. This copy will now quit.

How do I get around this problem?

mjgent 02-19-2005 05:31 PM

Are you currently running another instance of folding@home from before? Maybe a graphical interface version? If so, you'll have to stop that first to run 2 client versions. If not, then you need to setup two directory folders each with a copy of folding@home program, eg. folding1 & folding2. The easiest way to do this is when you download the latest client version of folding@home make a copy and put it into the other folder, i.e. folding2. Then make a shortcut of each folding@home executable file in each of their respectable folders (make sure each shortcut's properties are pointing to their respectable folder's executable). Then amend the target field to add the flags, eg. FAH502-Console.exe" -local -forceasm -config. The local will make it use the files in that specific folder not the other one. I would rename this shortcut something like Runconfig2. Now you'll need to follow what Chewtoy stated about the machine IDs in the config adv menu. If this doesn't help you please let us know more detail about how you have your folding@home setup and if there are any folding@home services running "control-alt-del".

I get that message on one of my HT machines every once in a while even when all is setup correctly. It usually will work on the next restart of it tho.

MadHacker 02-19-2005 09:24 PM

I take it will only work with text versions?
I tried 2 graphical versions...

MadHacker 02-19-2005 09:41 PM

OK i got it set up with the text version...
2 running...
so now i have these console windows ...
how do i get rid of them?

MadHacker 02-19-2005 09:57 PM

OK i now have started the services...
no console windows...
thanks for the help..

Current Folding Pace

FYI, we basically need to double our 1.2M team point score to break into the top 100. At our current pace it should take us another 19 weeks. It will probably be more though considering that there are a few teams between 100 and our current position (146) that are putting out higher weekly team points than we are.

MadHacker 03-17-2005 05:05 PM

bump
I'm in 10th place now :D
we are in 142 place
we need more folders...

scooterfl 03-17-2005 05:37 PM

great madhacker! Ive been watching your climb, keep it up.
agreed we need more folders.

in the words of Colonel Sandurz from Spaceballs: "keep folding a**holes"

mjgent 03-17-2005 07:02 PM

Yeah, great job Mad. At your rate you should be in the top 5 soon.

So... i've been away for a while. Just recently moved from Wisconsin to Colorado. Anyways... thought i'd chime in with an update. Just added (today) four Xeon 2.4's so my daily and weekly numbers should climb pretty decently. (I've been slacking a lot)

mjgent 03-30-2005 04:23 PM

That's awesome. That should really help. My IT manager at work will only let me fold our HT workstations and not our dual Xeon servers. I was tempted to do it anyways but he said he'd quit because he didn't want that variable during any troubleshooting. He's too good of an employee so I opted not to fold with our servers. :D

We have advanced a position on the folding list. From 137 to 136. Hehe, we´re gaining on them, lots of butt to kick along the way!
