that's going to be very hard to mill  harder than milling 2 of the others.
maybe i could try one also. Thanky for for the suggestion  |
ok so i began the milling with a drill press and an xy table
the 1mm channels where coming very good and neath (i did not excpect that acuracy) until my 1mm cobalt end mill split up into 2 pieces  and the funniest thing is that i could not find where the piece of the end mill ended. this ruined my block, i have to start it all over again     some problems encountered during milling with the drill press: i will have to make the channels equally long because i could not calculate exactly on my eye where i had to start the channel with the 1mm bit from far away. i managed to do the sides holes, the place which holes the water before it exits the block. that was quite an easy job and the milling came quite nice. i did that using a 5mm 3flute end mill. but the 1mm end mill   |
what is the best thing, making the channels long as the longest one or short as the shortest one?? or a way in the middle??
|
I got a deal on 1mm carbide endmills, for $2.50 a piece (qty: 10).
Do you want in? |
of toys, ehh sorry of coarse, where did you get those bits from?? can you give me the source web site please??

I actually e-mailed them for a quote, because going over "Warehouse#20" was getting a bit tedious! You won't find the price I quoted you either ;) unless you e-mail them. Look for extended length, 2 flute, square ended, endmills. My part# is EM2XL-0400. The diameter is actually 0.0400 inch, but that's as close as I could get it to 1.0 mm, which is 0.0394. Since it's an american measurement, it's cheaper, for me. When I told the guy what I needed it for (milling channels in copper) and asked for TIN coating, he said that these were "Sub Micro Grain Carbide", and that TIN coating wouldn't be necessary: it should be strong enough. He can add the coating, for $2.00 extra per bit (he can also add TIAlN for an extra $3). Since you're in Malta, I'd be willing to help you out, if you want to order directly, through an intermediary, or you can wait until I place my order, to add yours to mine. [edit] Here's a direct link. Note the flute depth, at 1/4" (6.35mm)!!! |

I don't know exactly. I'm waiting for Fixittt to let me know if he's willing and able to cut Radius with them.
One thing I didn't mention: I don't believe that these are center cutting endmills: is this a problem for you? |

A center cutting endmill can make a plunging cut, i.e. you can use it as a drill bit, to drill a hole.
If the bit is NOT center cutting, then it can only cut from the side, i.e. as you're cutting the channels. That means that you'd have to make a starting hole, using a regular drill bit. |
understood, it is absolutly not a problem
|
You've been PM'd.

since the wb is now fuc**d up, i continued to mill it with the broken 1mm endmill to see what is the difference.
with the broken end mill, the al that supposted to be removed, most of it is removed the same but some of it moves towards the top of the block instead, i.e. the end result, if you look at the block from the side, intead of seeing a flat surface (the top), one could see an extreemly bumpy one. i don't have a digital camera but i will try to go to hara's house and take some pics of it at this stage to try to express better what i am try to say :D |

i should be ordering the endmills by next week, my visa is outdated
i am planning to order 4 double edged square end 3/64" endmills and 1 single edged squared end 3/64" coated and long flutes (3/16") the first block is coming as bad as the smell of shit, and i new it from before, that is why i planned to cut more then 2, practice makes perfect. the problem is that al is so soft that it is more easy to make a mistake than when milling in copper  i will inform you on any changes and advances. |
Are you out of the 1mm endmill deal?
|

if i can find other sources than, it would be better no??? |
it looks like your taking WAY too much at a time, take less than .5mm with coolant/lube.
also, I think that with just the pins in the center, you can skip the outside fins. if you were to make those holes a little larger(7/64ths) and use a dremel to connect them... makes life 3000% easier;) Jon |

just a test :) and thank you for the milling suggestion |
ok so i email suncoast and asked them a question about their endmills, but i got no responce back.
do you think that it is worth to trust them and send them my visa number or??? need some opinions and your experiences |
Ok now my exams will soon be over and I want to continue my block, sorry I have to start it again from the beggining.
I have a question to ask, had I to buy 1.2mm endmills instead of 1mm end mills, what do you suggest?? Making 1.2 mm channels and leave 1mm of fins Making 1.2 mm channels and rize the fin width to 1.2mm or Making 1.2 mm channels on the same design, ie the fins become 0.8mm What is your suggestion?? |
I would go with 1mm fins and 1.2mm channels.
|
ok then thankx for your help. I will redesign the whole thing using the cad and post it here :P
