Hello i was hoping to start hosting some snap os files. The need seams clear from by prospective and i happen to have access to the means to due this with anonymity. Plus i need the newest version of snap os for my 4100 anyway. So fare i have managed to collect these two version 34805 and 40830 from various sites but i am trying to build a good index of whats around. Please PM me if there is anything you can contribute.

The distribution of these files is illegal - Well, for v4 at least, other than the free updates they have released

We have been through this before, and had FTP servers taken down after adaptec/snap appliance making noises and getting angry

Hmm yes i can see the disadvantages to hosting these files. in this case has some clearly morally corrupt person ever tried using a service like rapidshare.com or other no question asked hosts to put up these files? of course i am not saying my heart does not go out to adpatec and there choice to start charging for what was rightfully free given we have already paid a price in hardware.

Like Sam said: Distribution of these files are illegal. Even the older ones, are still Protected by Copyright Laws. There are no free version's any more since Adaptec Bought out Snap Appliance.

I have hoped that Adaptec would release these files since they have stopped support to these older units. So far they have not. I have been on Adaptec site, and they are no longer selling v4. So they are trying to kill these older units.

Please NO NOT POST LINKS on this SITE. Joe has been kind enough to allow us the use of his site, and we do not want to do anything to jeopardize it.

If you own a unit that is still in the support window, updates are available to you from Adaptec. You must be registered, and in some cases, sending an email to them will get you a link. This all depends on several things. 1. What mood they are in. 2. Weather they want to help you without a support contract.

If you email them, do it in a tone that is friendly, not negative or mad.

I just wanted to be clear that i had no intention of doing anything that would jeopardize the owner operator of this site. i have a lot of respect for the people who devote there time for us to have access to such a good venue for discussion. Any activities i would have been suggesting would have been conducted off the site and of course not been link to via this site. anyway i still have hopes of getting something worked out for providing a public access to these files or maybe just getting an up to date os for my snap but it looks like there is no interest in such a endeavor.

Adaptec use to have a updater (v4.0.860) that was free on there site. If you have not registered do so and check. Must be registered to have access to it.

You can buy entitlement for $200 from Adaptec. Call Customer Service.

Just call the tech support number for stupid Adaptec: 408-934-7274 Tell them what product you have (as you'll need your server number) and they will email you links for software that is free. Of course, the new stuff they want to charge you for... :(

...to think, they use to make good SCSI cards (Adaptec) maybe they still do... I'll have to dig out my Ultra Wide Cheetah HDD's ;)

I have gone back and forth with Adaptec trying to get 3 2200's I got up and running. The units came without hard drives so they're pretty useless right now. All I have asked Adaptec for is the image file and a copy of the OS that the units shipped with not a newer OS. They won't do anything unless I buy support. Adaptec uses factory software to load a 2200, not image flies. Image files was what our local hackers discovered. Just copied the boot tracks from a working HD.

The 2200 and 1100 uses the same boot procedure. So a 1100.img would boot a 2200, then you would need to reload the OS.

That or locate a image file. or Pay Adaptec $$$$$ for OS and HD + service contract. It's cheaper to buy one working w v4.

I have a snap server 1000. the power light comes on. the orginal hard disk is junk and I have tried to get an image off of it. I think if I had a good 1000 image that i could put it on a new hd and things would be good. I tried to find it using assist, it does not find any servers. I can get it to do the manual resets. I do not know what else to say. Snap tech allowed me to recently down load snapos 34807 software. I did expand it but i do not see a bin file. I have read a lot of this post. I believe that I need an image file to move forward. any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in Advance Tim

Sound like you have a v2 1000.

It will require the use of a image file to restore the unit. As to which ones 1000 have been misteries to me. My first guess would be a 2000.bin file.

Where to get them is the problem. Since it contains copyrighted material it illegal to distribute.

Others have found these files use BT (bit tollerent). But I have NO Idea where or which one.

If you know some who has a 2200, Have them prepare a drive for you. Then reinstall the OS to correct for any missing files.

I have an old Snap Server 1000 10GB unit that I would like to upgrade to something like 120-160GB if possible. I don't know how to tell what hardware version I have - it appears from what I've read of this thread v1 is the easier model to upgrade.

I still have the original box, which says the following: Quantum Snap! Server M1000, Rev. R, 10GB JAN 2000. P/N: 5325301081

Does that help in determining the hardware version?

Also, it appears the main mechanism for upgrading drives is to do a bit-level drive copy from old to new. I have access to a hardware based IDE drive duplicator which doesn't care what the OS or Partition are, because it does a bit-level copy - would this work well for doing a drive upgrade on a Snap Server?

Follow-Up: Just opened my Snap Server 1000 - the motherboard has the following printed on it: MORTY.1C 70715027-003 REV.A 1999 Meridian Data Inc.

Does that help to determine if it's hardware v1 or v2?

Is it also important to determine the firmware/software version before I do the drive swap? What is the best way to do this?

A version 1 will boot without a HD. Meaning you can access the admin page with NO HD installed.

If your Bios is v2+ you should be good.

blue68f100: I had already removed the HD, so I thought I would see if the unit would boot without it, I also recalled that my network had been reconfigured since the last time this snap server was in operation, so I ran the wiki procedure to clear all setting back to factory defaults (with the reset button/startup procedure). I recall reference to an application called "Assist" or "Assistant" - I believe this is required to do initial setup and assign an IP address - where can I find this app? I looked on Adaptec's support sight and found something called Snap Server Manager - is that it?

Snap Server Manager does not see anything on my network. I have a patch cable connected and the System light is green following the reset procedure (but none of the other lights are on). I also tried to ping "snapxxxxxx" (where xxxxxx = the serial no) but got no response, so wasn't really surprised when it didn't show up in the web browser under http://snapxxxxxx/config

Actually when I power up, the System light comes on and stays green/solid and the Disk light flashes orange 3 times slowely, then goes off, but I don't get a Link or Net light.

Plugged the HD back in and got better results - HD is spinning, System and Net flash, Link is green - got prompted for password at http://snapxxxxxx/config

Of course I don't know what it is...and it wouldn't accept blank...

I reran the reset procedure (clear all) with the HD installed and finally got into the Config Screen. I have the following version info:
Software: 2.2.393
Hardware: 3.1.1
Bios: 2.1.363

So which procedure do I follow for a HD upgrade?

Just noticed the internal fan is not spinning - is it supposed to come on with the power, or is it based on temp? The case is open right now.
