If you have two ide controllers (M/S or CS) then its a 4000. The 4100 has 4 seperate ide controllers.

As for as the OS know is the number of drives( 1,2,4,12). My 2200 reports as a 2000.

I have a Snap 4100 running 3.4.770, 2.4.437 BIOS, Hardware rev 2.2.1. I too am looking for these magical updates that make the Snap happier with modern operating systems. Can anyone provide a clue?

The 4100 has OS stored in Flashram. It's a headless computer with limited hardware (cpu, ram, hd controllers and nic). No one has tried to load a different OS. There is no way to do it, with out having the developers test hardware and software. The flashram is soldered in place, so it can't be easly replaced. The Snap OS originated from the FreeBSD, unix flavor. We would be happy to figure away to get LBA48Bit support (hd >137gig). Which would require a BIOS upgrade to fix the raid controller firmware, which SnapAppliance will not do.

Unless you require MS 2003 AD, there is not a whole lot of options.

The price of these units keep coming down, making them attractive for home users.

Now for another OS question (while the Wiki is down). Other than for MS Active Directory (which I will need to do in about 4 months), is there ANY advantage to OS 4.xx.xx? If so, which version is best?

And, will the same 3.4.805 for a Snap 4000 work on a Snap 1000?

Mine must be a 4000 then. It is 2U and has 2 IDE connectors, not 4. Set up as Cable Select I think by the looks of the cables (rainbow with slots cut in them), but I dunno, it came with no drives...

If you drop the -004 off of the end it does come up in google, although there isn't a link to a product page or anything. The -00x seems to just be the revision number of the unit. Evidentally Adaptec doesn't have anything on their website that references the 4000 series by model number, only by product name.

Here is some more artifacts on the 4000's:

Models -002 were set as M/S = 40 connector
Models -003 and greater were CS and a 80 connector

Other than AD no other advantage for v4 since 3.4.805 supports HD >137gig.

It depends what MS active directory you using

If it is a Windows Server 2003, you will need OS v4, otherwise v3 is fine.

IF you are using 2003, you will need .860, as it implements security fix from MS (If the wiki was up, i could tell you what), but you will have installed it, so you will problbly need 4.0.860

The 4x00 runs fine with 4.0.860 if you have a min of 128meg, as normal more is better.

It came with 64meg in it, I changed it to a 128meg, and as soon as I find it, I have a 256meg I will be putting in. Now all I have to do is find the 4.0.860 (or a version I can upgrade with the adaptec download).

Curious, why does the 4.0.860 need the extra memory that 3.x.x doesn't?

With the extra demons that are required for MS AD and the large disk require a little extra ram inorder to run smoothly.

Makes sense to me. Besides, it has the letters MS attached, that always means more memory, more processor, and more crashes as a bonus. ;)

At the risk of saying "me too!"....

My Snap 4100 is serial # 500104, software 2.4.437, hardware 2.2.1, firmware 2.4.437. When I try to use Snap! Assist or the OSUpdate command-line tool to upgrade it to 4.0.860 (Snap_4_x.sup), I get the message "this file is not a valid upgrade for your server." Is there an upgrade path for my server, or is it just too old? Might it be possible to upgrade from 2.4.437 to an intermediate version line 3.4.805, and then go up to 4.0.860 from there?

I have a second 4100 (#570764) that upgraded from 4.0.854 to 4.0.860 with no hassle (so I have some confidence that I know how to do the "easy ones").

The 4.0.860 is an update patch, not a full OS. You need to have a 4.x.x already on the Snap Server to use the 4.0.860 Patch, which is why your 4100 had no problems using the update.

OS 3.4.805 is probably all you need, unless you need to use MS Active Directory. In which case, you need 4.0.860 for the MS AD.


FYI, I am not a Snap expert. I am just passing on the help that was recently given to me. Experts please correct me here if I have steered him incorrectly.

The 4.0.854 is a full version, use it, then move up to the 4.0.860

I need 3.4.805 as well. I've been running into problems with 3.2.671 and have no problems on 3.4.803, so I'm hoping 3.4.805 will fix them.

What kind of problems are you having?

803 to 805 has no bug fixes, it added hardware support.

Give me your snap vitals, Model, HW, BIOS versions. This info can be found by clicking on the SnapAppliance Logo on the admin page.

Where can I get a copy of the 3.4.805 OS? I heard it was Free to upgrade to it correct? I can give Serial number and all that if needed would just like to upgrade to new OS on Snapserver 2000. Considering Adaptec Takeover I cant find OS upgrade anywhere on there site.

Are you sure yours model is upgradeable.

Click on the SnapAppliance Logo from the admin page and post results.

V1 2000 have problem with hd >137gig, LBA48 bit support NOT.

You have a v2 2000, which has the DIMM memory. And is upgradeable to large disk with out any problem.

I'm so glad I found this forum. I've been bugging Adaptec for such a long time trying to get the latest firmware and I just can't get through to anybody who knows what they are doing over there....

I have 3 questions / problems:

1. I need to update the firmware to something that'll support bigger HD than 130GB. I think from looking at the forum, it's at least 3.4.805? Can someone PLEASE email me whichever version that will work with the big drives? I tried 2 300GB drives and it's coming out as something around 130GB... If you can send me the firmware, I'd be very greatful.

This is my Hardware settings:
Model: 2000 series
Software: 3.4.772
Hardware: 2.0.0
Server: 34999
BIOS: 2.0.252


2. Is there a clock battery in this thing? No matter what I do to make the IP address static, it keeps on reverting back to Dynamic. Have you guys seen this before?

3. What type of memory do I need to upgrade the unit? I've looked around the Wiki and the forum and bit and I couldn't see it... Is it a PC100 DIMM? Or something lot older?
