Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
Is this block any good?
I'm about to order two of them and was wondering if they would be a good performing block? http://www.vadim.co.uk/images/img_4615.jpg Any thoughts? |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
Please don't use that flowkiller...
|
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
It's it's combined with two MCP655's on the same loop as a Black Ice Xtreme II and Black Ice Xtreme as well as a Swiftech MCW5002-T and Criticool Waterplant... do you think the flow rate would still be significantly low?
|
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
Well I've bought two.
They will cool down my X1900XTX Crossfire rig once I get the X1900XT Crossfire Master card. |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
if two of those dont at least halve your flowrate, id be surpised.
edit - with two mcp655's it probably wont be halved but ouch.. |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
Do us a favour, hook it up with a short run of tubing to a single MCP655 and do the timed-bucket-fill flow rate test and let us know the results.
Then retest with two of these blocks and one MCP655. Then retest with both blocks and both MCP655s. Three points will give me an approximation of the PQ chart. |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
I'll do that as soon as they arrive.
They're coming from Germany and I'm in Canada.. a tad bit of a journey. |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
put in a separate loop, but pointless to WC ram
NO demonstration of efficacy that I have ever seen (e-penis stuff aside) |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
mod it!
Time to cut into some plastic. |

Though I do believe Ed's block has a much higher flow rate, with a somewhat similar design? And yes, I know watter cooling the RAM is more "Bling" then function. ;) |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
Selling the pair might be another option and picking up a better block if you dont want to mod it.
If you want to mod it would be to hard as the cover is very thick http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/8017/image0534ko.jpg http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/5581/image0568ey.jpg |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
increasing the passage size is about futile as velocity will drop,
need more copper in contact with the coolant; accept it for the bling |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
I might have them setup on there own 2 pumps.
I have heard from many sites that the performance difference between 1/2" and 3/8" and smaller is minimal so long as there is restriction above the VPU/GPU and enough power to keep a decent flowrate. Would this be true? |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
Actually with this block the tubing size wont matter much. It looks like it's very restrictive, and will kill your flow anyway. Most of the copper surface is totally useless...

Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
REviews show it keeping a GeForce 6800 Ultra at 57C under load when overclocked to 475/1260
This is on a loop using a Hydor L30 and the loop is also cooling the CPU. See with the stock cooler the overclocked settings made the GPU hit 85C... that's insane.. this block brought it down to 57C... pretty decent if you ask me. But before we get into talking about how it will perform.. I'll wait till I get it. I've ordered two more MCP655's so 3 of them total just in case. The case I'm using is Gigantic so space is not a problem (heck the Black Ice Xtreme II fits on the back of the case). http://www.xtremecomputing.co.uk/ima...s/image066.gif |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
I know watercooling RAM is not really needed but is that the same for gfx ram? Why do all GFX air coolers cool the ram if its unecessary?
Just wondering what people think as i have a GPU block and was looking into getting a full block like one of these that cools the GFX RAM as well. |

It does make a difference as does cooling high performance system ram with a heatspreader. When you've overclocking and running a product out of spec on either the clockrate or the voltages you generate more heat. Heat reduces the efficiency of electricity to move in a circuit. So by cooling it, you're able to somtimes stabilize the the RAM so that it can operate at a higher frequency. This is especially true with High performance video card RAM which is hot to begin with (Especially DDR-2 and GDR3). |
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
Cut a new one from inlet straight to center channel and do the same for the outlets.
|
Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
I have this block on my X1900XT and my idle temp is 37C and load is 45C. Its pretty good IMO.

Quick question... what does your watercooling loop consist of? |

That's pretty big...lol

Re: Alphacool 1/2" NVXP-3 ATI Waterblock?
just sell the blocks. Shallow the $20-40 you going to lose and get some mcw-60
