Snap server 2200 will not turn on

I need some help with my Snap Server 2200. Last time it was pluged in the power and ran fine. I usually remove the power while it's not in use to avoid transient surges. I recently plugged it in and it looks like something has gone worng and the LEDs do not come on nor do the drives spin up.

I called the folks at Adaptec and they would not speak to me unless I paid $137 http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/ima...ilies/mad2.gif
.
I will not buy any of their junk again but in the mean time, can some give me some pointers or hints?

Thanks in advance and god bless!

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Make sure the power supply is good with a volt meter.

On my 2200 I have to hold the button for 5-10 sec for it to startup.
Sometimes wiggling the power button helps, while holding.

There is a battery inside. If it fails the unit will not startup.

Thanks Blue!
I've done all except the battery. I will replace it and see if I can get it running again.
Blessings!

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

It's a standard 3V CR2032 lithium battery. Shouldn't be too hard to find if that is the problem Philip. Keep us posted.

I changed the battery and it still won't run.

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Time to whip out the multi-meter and check a few things:

- Check to make sure the jack on the motherboard where the power supply plugs in isn't loose, check the solder joints on the bottom with the meter to make sure that power is making it to the motherboard through the jack.
- Check to make sure the power button is good using the continuity test on your meter.
- I am not super familiar with the 2200, but it would stand to reason that there is some sort of +5V "power good" from the power supply, or some sort of secondary supply in the case. Make sure that it is present at all times when the unit is plugged in.

Just a few things that I would check right off the bat. Let us know what you find.

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

PS: I feel the processor gettig warm while it has power hooked up. But the LEDs won't turn on nor will the drives spin up.

Any suggestions?

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Still could be the power supply. Not putting enough amps out to spin up the drives or kick start the unit. Try this. disconnect the drives and power up. If you get activity on the LED's then you probably just need a new power supply. They are available on ebay. i BELIEVE the 1100 and 2200 use the same one. At least that's what some of the auctions say.

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Hello Shane,
I disconnected the drive and attempted to power o and the LEDs did not come on.
The Pentium and surrounding chip were getting warm. THe output voltage is to specification.

I am truly dumbfounded.

Philip

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

There should be the 3v round battery on the system board. disconnect your unit from power, remove this battery, and then press and hold the power button on the unit for 10 seconds, then release the power button, put the battery back in, and then plug it back into power and see if that makes a difference. That's a trick i always use.

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

No luck. Disks or the fans spin nor will the LEDs turn on.
THis is junk that has my data on it.

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Data is not lost. Sounds like a power supply problem.

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Well he said the voltage was to spec so it might be a bad motherboard. I'd give Adaptec a call at this point, see if the unit has any kind of warranty left on it.

Unfortunately Adaptec will not speak to me with me paying $132.
I don't think I'll ever buy their junk again.

What was the name of that place that had the snap parts for sale? Maybe they have something to get this beast going again.

You mean this place http://www.northwesttechnical.com/

I think they just bought old surplus parts that Adaptec was selling off to recoupe some revenue. It's a common practice.

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Philip, You might want to ask David (blue68f100) if he'd be willing to let you send him your drives so he can get the data off for you since he has a working 2200. I'd definately be interested in taking a look at the hardware itself minus hard drives if you're thinking of junking it.

Yep, that's them. Perhaps he could pick up a new mobo and get his snap on its feet again.

When i looked through their website i didnt see a 2200 mobo, saw some for 1100's and some other random parts, mostly power supplies. I wish i would have known about this site sooner. I would have bought that 4100 on ebay that didnt have the front bezel on it becauet ehey're only $25.

My Snap Server 2200 dead! Where can I buy 2200 w/o hdd?

blue68f100 05-16-2007 05:28 PM

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Did the PS die or did you loose your HD's the reason for it being dead.

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

I think motherboard die there is no leds i have tried unplug power/battery for less 1 minute then put back on still won't turn on

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Check the output on the ps. Should be 12vdc. Tese do fail from time to time. If I recall there is a fuse block on the mb. To the right of the power socket is a block 1/2" x 3/16" and around 1/2 tall. You should see 4 bare wires. This is the fuse block, check with meter, for a open. If failed just bridge the connection. Also if the battery is dead it will not start either.

Your best source for parts is eBay right now. Northwestern carries some older parts but has not had any of these 2200. They may in the future since Adaptec no longer sells or support them, unless it still in warranty.

Remember you must hold the power button for around 5-10 sec before it will start.

Can anyone repair on snap 2200 motherboard? like replace small parts?

blue68f100 06-01-2007 06:36 AM

Re: Snap server 2200 will not turn on

Northwestern carries some parts but none for the 2200. I do play with them a lot, but do not do board repair. I would be gald to check the unit out for you.

Some units are hard to start. I don't know if it the switch or the chip that controls the startup. I have a 1100 here right now, that is like that. It want start for days the next time it start up.

I do know is that startup does put a strain on the power supply. Close to 6 amp for the first 10 sec. Try starting it up with just one drive. It's possiable a HD is killing the 12v. If I recall if you try to start with NO drives it will give you and error code (led patteren).
