What cpu's you would most like in a dream system

Personally, I'd go for the Xeons, you can set them to 133mhz, and get any multiplier from 14 - 22x. So they probably would perform damned good

I was drawn... Either a Dual 2.2Ghz P4 Xeon, or 2Ghz MP's... I picked the MP's cause they will walk all over the P4's.

I dunno Joe, the northwood core xeon's are supposed to have SMT, which means 5-30% increase in speed, as well as 512kb cache, etc.

I think in stock form, overall, the Xeon's would match or beat the MP's

SMT isn't here yet in its true form. Northwood may have some minor abilities, but its just like saying the P4 is a 50% increase in speed over the P3.

Which we all know is BS, and the P3's at the same clock SLAM the P4 core. Bigger cache will only be a big advantage doing DB work or extremely memory intesive work. over 256K you wont see much of an overall increase in most apps.

the MP's dont need to be heavily coded for, and code you already have and existing will go much faster than the "special" enhancements needed for the P4 or Xeons...

SMT or not, if you aren't running some big Oracle server, or some big Term Services/Citrix server, you wont see a 1/10th of the added performance they are hype'n.

For practical power that you can USE, AMD or the Tualatins are the only options.

Yes I know, the P4 did suck, but once we can buy cpu's on the northwood core I do think that the P4 may be slightly ahead, and by the time the northwood hits 133mhz fsb, we can only hope AMD is running on .13, cause otherwise the northwood will be definately in the lead

A test between Xeon and MPs (about a month ago) mainly showed Xeon on top, but MPs weren't that far behind.

I'd just go with MPs because I could game on it until they were obsolete, and then turn it into a server.

I have seen 3 or 4 MP vs Xeon tests, only one which was 1900+ vs 2ghz. The MP won about 50% by a small amount. About 20% the MP won by a large amount. And the remaining 30% were big wins to the Xeon.

I think that once the Xeon is at 2.2ghz with 512kb cache, the MP will win 20% by a bit, the Xeon will win the rest

you may want to note the many thousand $$$ price difference between the Xeons and MP's. You could build 2 Dual MP boxes for the cost of a Xeon 2.2Ghz dual rig.

The best performance/cost ratio is the dual MP. With all the new 760MPX boards coming out it, your average computer user can build a dualie for a reasonable cost. Personally I have my eye on the ASUS A7M266-D.........but lately ASUS has had it's share of problems, may have to go ABIT or Tyan......can't wait for the reviews

hehe I know, the Xeon's have a huge cost.

I am looking to the asus, usb isn't an issue to me right now, and I can see the USB2.0 hub being more use to me in the future than I can now.

The Tyan one of course won't be able to overclock, but will be very stable (no reason why the other boards shouldn't be)

The Abit is going to take a while to get here, but will probably be the best for overclocking

I don't know, I would rather prefer 8-16 risc Chips for my sun box. But, that is just me. *wonders what the hell he would do with that much processor*

Yeh getting a Quad 733Mhz Alpha machine would be SWEET. In processing power it would hammer all existing CPU's easily. And still cost less than the Dual Itanium boxes...

Dualie fans, check out the first review on the ASUS A7M266-D at www.gamepc.com.....interesting comparison to a dual Zeon....notice that the mobo has the four holes around the sockets, but they are NOT DRILLED!......unless you want to drill the mobo, it limits the choice to clamp-on WB's, damnit!

yeah, thats a little annoying, I'd probably be using a maze2 with a maze1c clip though, so it wouldn't worry me.

Joe's little Quad Alpha would get its ass chewed against a Quad Sun UltraSparc III 900mhz with 8MB Cache per processor. But for the more practical Dual Athlons would have supperior ownage. But for the rich boy bling bling that can afford $500 per processor wholesale cost of the 2.0ghz Xeons, those would totally rock. But I don't think you can get much Overclockability out of them because of the boards they run on, Supermicro or Tyan don't really catter to overclockers. Then if your board comes with VRMs you have more stuff to hack up or worry about.

I'd take a nice IBM RS/6000 box with a nice 0.1 micron power4 chip... can you say 2 chips on one die :D

Butch: Have you seen IBM's expirmental quantum computer? They got some atoms to arrange themselves in an 8-Bit qubit and it solved a small scale encryption key in a matter of seconds, something that cannot be done by standard 2-Bit Supercomputers like ASCI White (world most powerful computer). This means that any encryption key can be broken now with a large enough quantum computer :) including keys that are 1024 Bits and 2048 Bits (NSA kinda of stuff)

RS/6000s are nice for current stuff though, used to do a lot of seti on the servers at work... they let me use 8 2-way 200MHz machines to myself... silly people :D

I am useing a rs-6000 here at the house, I like aix, I just have a 160 processor though. (its a 43p)

on all those xeon boards, you can select any multiplier lower than the stock intel one. like on a 2ghz, you have 20x100. You can select 8x - 20x.

you can select 100 or 133 mhz fsb. also, you can change the vcore up to 1.85v. So you can play a little bit

I've actually never used a 43P, these were a SP rack. I also had a quick play on a 24-way S80, now that's a comp :D

my last job got 2 16way RS6000 S80's in the IBM rack for them... That was some serious power. 4 GB of ram in each.

Cluster of 16 watercooled dual P2 Xeon 450 with 2mb of cache in a 19" full size rack...

Sweet Joe, this was a 24-way 32GB S80 in a bigass rack, didn't see it much it was in the 200ft by 200ft comp room which you needed special access to get into. One hell of a lot of machines there ;)

*drool* I would love to have one of those, or the sunfire systems sun is putting together. THe biggest machine I have ever got to play with is a HP visual workstation with 2 500 risc processors and a gig of ram. It was slick.
