Should i part with my AXP and get an intel?

i dont know. this guy offered me 200 bux for an Abit KR7A-133 and an unlocked Athlon XP 1700+. should i sell him this and get an intel northwood 1.6a?

Ewwww AMD :D

Brad 04-06-2002 09:48 PM

I think 200 is probably a little low, but yeah, I'd go intel right now

SonixOS 04-06-2002 11:33 PM

i was thinking 220 cuz this box is basically new. i got replacement for the processor and mobo. mobo is 2 days old. brad do u have an intel? i just want to kno who actually have it and are speaking from experience. i am amazed that mkosem acheived 2ghz with stock cooling.

I build computers every day ;)

P4's are just easier. simple. most P4 1.6A's will run at 2.3 to 2.5 in my experience with stock cooling. One did 2.6.

SonixOS 04-07-2002 10:32 AM

looks good to me. looks like i'll get an intel if the person boosts up the price

brad, which cheap mobo do u recommend? i was looking at the i845d chipset. looks good to me but i dont know where to read reviews for intel processors

Intels are still gonna suck untill they up the FSB to 133.
And thats only if you pay for 533 RDRAM.

so at like 2.6 thats = to like an athlon 600 Mhz or so? :)

Haddy 04-07-2002 12:52 PM

i say wait a couple month on the t-breds and then make ur desion....oh and btw u would have to overclock that p4 just to get it to run a fast as an amd at its stock speed....

jag_e_fattig 04-07-2002 01:10 PM

overclocking is almost the only thing chipzilla has running for it...

SonixOS 04-07-2002 01:48 PM

DDR performs better in overclocking.

my 1.6a does 2.5 stable on the stock air cooling and 1.8v. I'm probably gonna do a voltmod when I get my alpha because this chip does 2.6 with the current cooling, it's just not too stable. I say go for p4 and ddr. I've been having good luck with intel for the last few months and I've yet to break an intel chip(heh no chernobyls either).

my old axia:

oh, and my p4@2.5 is very close in benches to Jason-Pro's XP @ 1.94 and my chip was significantly cheaper than his.

*edit* here's some linkage to benches:
cpu bench
multimedia bench
memory bench

RDRAM is crap, I've said it once, I'll say it again. Even though the memory BANDWIDTH of rdram is a tad higher(which I've managed to overcome) the rdram itself is just too slow to keep up.

Intel seems to be the best on the market right now, but AMD definitely gets the bang for the buck award... and my business. :)

mkosem 04-07-2002 08:08 PM

bang for your buck! my cpu costed $133 which is prety cheap for being as fast as it is. and my mobo was $103

ECUPirate 04-07-2002 08:15 PM

are intel's really that much easier to overclock? a simple FSB adj? 1.6@2.5 = 100bus @156mhz!!! how does the rest of the system handle such an increase? I'm assuming there's some sort of PCI multiplier...

my system now has a 1.33 athlon C at 1477... I haven't had time to do any tweaking. I just tried it and it worked. :) I only changed the multiplier though. Would I be better off if I had bumped up the FSB instead?

SonixOS 04-07-2002 11:39 PM

so since the multiplier is locked. is it locked from any adjustments at all? Can you clock it down?

Brad 04-08-2002 03:56 AM

if you can run at 100:133 ddr ratio, go ddr. but at the point where your ram speeds need to be slowed down, look at rdram

phreenet 04-08-2002 07:08 AM

No doubht that Intel is just using 2.0 GHZ + cores to satitisfy demand for their 1.6A models, which is good for overclockers, but don't you guys think that your CPUs are just posting, and when they get too hot like they might be that the chip is just clocking itself down again to protect it? Sure you would see the POST when you boot but does it stick? When you crank up on the voltage it has to go over 60W output, which is kinda of high for just some cheal AL heatsink and fan. Just my opinion though

Brad 04-09-2002 02:34 AM

use wincpuid to measure the real time cpu clock

Haddy 04-09-2002 03:10 AM

voltage doesnt give u more speed, it just gives u a more stayble system (if it can sometimes ur just plum outa luck)

Brad 04-09-2002 04:57 AM

my p3 500e didn't like over 700 at default voltage. at 1.95v it will do 885.

the p3 1000eb does 1230 at default voltage. it does 1335 with 2.05v

my p3 1100e's will do 1285 at default voltage. they do 1400 with 2.05v. with water they will get to 1450 or so with 2.05v

don't tell me voltage doesn't matter

hehe thanks for proving my point....in and over itself i does nothing to increase speed (its not like fsb or multiplyer)..its just gives u a more stable oc if ur computer wont oc with the original voltage...i in no way place shape or form said voltage doesnt matter

Brad 04-09-2002 01:54 PM

well yeah, you can hit the bios and select 3v if you want, the cpu won't automatically go faster, but the extra voltage enables you to get to much higher speeds

SonixOS 04-09-2002 06:33 PM

kids kids, cool it down and try some higher thinking skills and try to prove something that is not OBVIOUS! haha
