A new ProCooling
Well with the release of Vbb3.0 Gamma the forum code is solidifying to the point that I can start the work to get the forum upgraded along with the associated scripts.
On top of that I am starting to work on a full site overhaul, basing much of it on borrowing script work I designed for MWL, and the MWL registration system, and some info from Wizzard from OCFaq.com . Lotsa worked involved with a full site overhaul. |
I am assuming this is all the result of "babe of the day" requests?
|
"babe of the day"?!?!
Where is she, I need someone with nice.... err presonality to wish me good (morning/evening/afternoon) everytime I log on. ~ Boli |
HEY
can you put the babes into a database so we can write the specs ? shit then we'll need a 'buy one now' button too |
Yea when we are doing cooling reviews and how tos then we can do things "the old fashioned way" but when dealing with female nudity then the latest and greatest in web design must be used posthaste :)
|
So whats the benifits with updating to vB3.0? New features?
|
free BJ's and such for admins of it.
and its 1 more than 2 which makes it better I guess :) |

I was talking to pH about this a while back, and one of the problems he mentionned, which would be inherent to fully converting the site over to aa PHP based system like we have at OCfaq, is all the existing content in the old format. I had a thought though... what if all the articles get converted to a new PHP format, etc.... and that everythign is fully integrated. Then, in order for all the linkage everywhere to still work, one could set up the existing article pages as automatic forwarding to the new location of the article, preserving old links.
|
yea but someone still has to convert 400 pages of content over to new system if we were to integrate old reviews.
I think we'll have to somehow graft the new system on top of the old to make it "go" without a huge amount of hassle. |
A database powered system that would allow the other members of the staff (pH, brians, etc.) to enter reviews/articles would also rock, but there is still the problem of converting the existing content to use the new system.
If you are wanting to stay with the static pages, a good CSS file could make the job of formatting stuff much easier for you. I thought that KE's suggestion is prety good, create a page that is just static links to "old" content, and enter the older atricles into the database over a long period of time. But what do I know about site design  |
We're talking basic text files for the articles, right? No Word, or PDF crap.
If that's the case just use lovely Perl or Python(Eck) to replace old links with new links. You've got a mix of relative and full-path links, I'm sure, so it would just be a matter of determining which substitutions need to be made for those two types of links. You can use the same script, with minor adjustments, on your img links as well. You could very easily script the whole process with a little time and thought put into it. It's no biggie, just thought I'd give you another avenue to look down, instead of trying to do it by hand. There is a good html parser for Perl, Html::TokeParser, that would allow you to split your pages into categorized chunks, like all the text, then font tags and finally any body tags and whatnot. What I said before about scripting the whole thing is still doable, just takes a bit of thought, and it would still end up taking less time than probably any other means. |
Hehe thanks for the help, but I already have a plan and a rouch idea how I am going to execute this ;)
Also perl is not lovely, perl is the antichrist of languages ;) |
perl.exe -e"($crap = shift) =~ s/\w*(.*?)\s\w{3}(\s.{20})\w*(\s.*)/No$1$2savior$3/; print $crap;" "Also perl is not lovely, perl is the antichrist of languages"
Now that's a bit better.... |
God I hate perl
hehehe |
That's just something I can't understand. I mean, Perl, is the God of jerry-rigged languages. I can do pretty much anything I want with it without having to follow rules, or structure what-so-ever. As an OC'er, Mod'er and Opensource-wiener Perl fits my personality the best. In my mind, if duct tape is everyone's best friend, then Perl is programming's duct tape. Anyways, PHP syntax-wise, is alot lot Perl anyways, but I don't really want to get ino a nasty heated discussion about this here. I was merely giving a suggestion about how to re-tool the old php pages so that they would work with/if the new design. I'm sure one of these days, I'll go put on a robe and sandals. I'll grab my walking stick and travel into the world preaching to the non-believers to lay down their Java, throw away their .NET and release themselves from the shackles of structured programming! So I won't start here. I'd be interested in hearing more about your plan, after it's finished. This could be a DO's/DON'Ts of site redesign, if you wanted to do that sort of thing. Anyways, best of luck, I know these things can get tricky fast.

Still looks like the old ProCooling?!? :D

ive been busy working on the other code changes first ;) Theres a good deal of work to be done, to incorporate the changes pH wants and the changes I want into the site.
|
I like the "post preview" in the e-mail notifications, quite handy :)
|
Heh, looking good. Was about to say there was no quote button, but all you have to do is hit the reply button on any of the posts and it quotes it. :)
|
I've got a request! I generally enter the forums via the "new posts" search, and am really fond of that button to go to the first unread post in a given thread. Problem is, if I reply to a message, all the threads are marked read and my favorite button disappears. :(
|
upgraded to RC2 today, let me know if it fixes any of your bitching ;)
|
Yup, I'm happy now! :)
Or at least happier....still no babe o' the day? And the 90 seconds timeout between between seaches can be a PITA, but I respect the intent. |
gunna drop it to 60, its pretty intense on the server and since most info is found on this forum via searches its a risky thing to leave wide open.
|
I understand completely. We regularly piss off people/forums; can't be giving 'em easy ways to bring you down.
|
A suggestion Joe
Can you make the links on front page open in a new window as it did before? I like to open several forum threads at a time from the main page :) |
damnit man, people bitched about that ;)
|
People need to learn of the superiority of the tabbed browser
