Koolance Exos review in PCPro (sic)

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/?http://www.p...y.php?id=59390

"As any physics teacher will tell you, gold has better thermal conductivity than copper, plus it looks cooler too."

James Gorbold as fool of the day

the Koolance system uses proprietary 6mm inner diameter pipes.
proprietary ha

lol
Now who was it that had a sig quoting someone regarding the topic of gold being a thermal conductor....?
cant think of it darn.

BalefireX 07-21-2004 05:37 PM

Are the statements he makes about the Swiftech kit running 10-15C hotter than a Koolance kit complete nonsense as well? No comments on this?

AngryAlpaca 07-21-2004 05:44 PM

Can you anodize steel? I thought it was strictly aluminum.
Quote:

vThat's a pretty impressive claim for a waterblock, but believable, as the surface area of the waterblock is so large and the base is gold plated.
*COUGH* Large compared to what? How'd you measure? About the gold: So? There is so little gold that it doesn't really matter. Does plating add another thermal resistance (ever so tiny) to the block? Just wondering...

Rather than using 'standard' 0.5in outer diameter pipes
I can see why you'd put "standard" in quotes.

Now that I know what proprietary means, I find that comment amusing. Very amusing. I mean, 6mm tubing hasn't been used in Europe for years now, NA a long time ago (guess here) and in medicine for a really long time...
Quote:

The two blue external pipes are pre-fitted with quick-release nozzles which self seal when you pull them out of a socket,
Finally something good about the Koolance... Does anyone know where you can get these?
Quote:

The real unique selling point of this Koolance bundle, though, is the amazing Inertx PF5080 perfleurocarbon coolant
I never heard about that either... (not criticism)
Quote:

It took us just forty minutes to build and fit the whole system into our dual 2.8GHz Xeon PC.
Does this sound abnormally long to anyone else?
Quote:

These temperatures are a good 10-15 degrees cooler than with the Swiftech 22501 Extreme system fitted to the CPUs.
Can anyone confirm? That doesn't agree with anything I've ever heard, and this guy gives evidence that it shouldn't be superior...
Quote:

and it didn't leak all over our test PC
Yes. That's Swiftech's fault, not yours.

SlaterSpeed 07-21-2004 05:46 PM

Cathar came up with a theory that the guy left the main tap on the fill/bleed closed (he obviously does not know how to use the thing)

Guess we will never know for sure

what to do when a fool unfairly bashes a product ?
no idea at all, obviously PCPro is on my shit list - but the damage is done

"10 to 15 degrees", no specifics, no nuthin
effing amazing

pHaestus 07-21-2004 05:56 PM

But how was the delivery and tone? That's what's important, right?

Etacovda 07-21-2004 05:59 PM

"With the processors sitting idle in Windows and the fans set to mode 1, we measured CPU 1 at 36°C and CPU 2 at 41°C"

um... am i severly mistaken, or shouldnt they be at very similar temperatures?

I thought I used to, about cathar hittin' them with a flamethrower

I'll take the flamethrower over the voodoo doll

maybe they are, and the test equipment is that off...

bad mounting, normal diff is 1-3°

bigben2k 07-21-2004 07:27 PM

Wow, that's spectacularly bad!

Cathar 07-21-2004 07:27 PM

I think this just highlights the manifest difficulties that water-cooling (or any other for that matter) manufacturer's face when selling stuff, and that stuff ultimately being picked up for review.

Unless the kit is totally idiot proof, and yes these guys behind many of the print and web pages are in-fact total and utter idiots, then we'll always see idiots screwing up reviews of perfectly good hardware.

I guess the problem with water-cooling is that it is still a little bit mysterious for the average user, and unlike CPU's or motherboards where most people can fairly easily pick a poorly setup system that's been set up by an idiot reviewer, with water-cooling people are not as aware of the possible things that an idiot can do.

Truly we have an idiot here, full of shit spouting out nonsense information that only yet again leads to further confusion in the wider community, and further propogates misconceptions.

I'm just pressuring up the flame-thrower as I write this....

bigben2k 07-21-2004 07:32 PM

There's an opportunity to leave comments on the article. Should we do this poor fellow a favor? :D

BillA 07-21-2004 08:14 PM

pointless
a letter to the managing editor describing the author's incompetence would do more
but I cannot, as I would be percieved as having a vested interest

AngryAlpaca 07-21-2004 08:49 PM

How should I phrase it? I don't think my style of just bashing until I'm done works, as I'm fairly sure that they stop reading quickly when you start off with an insult.

greenman100 07-21-2004 08:55 PM

a link to this thread emailed to the managine editor wins for performance to time ratio

SlaterSpeed 07-22-2004 03:53 AM

I was planning to email the CPC editor about it (the review originated in Custom PC mag). Maybe i will do it today. (im lazy ;) )

BillA 07-22-2004 09:35 AM

Custom PC too ?
christ

pHaestus 07-22-2004 10:37 AM

hmm is it worth the effort to try and get a Koolance EXOS for the wcing kit reviews?

BillA 07-22-2004 10:57 AM

I'd like one too, just can't get enthused about giving them $

you should be able to get one 'for review'

HAL-9000 07-22-2004 11:12 AM

Its a good thing these people don't test airplanes. Perhaps we should imitate Koolance and send him a waterblock made out of rubber, or even better...space shuttle re-entry tile, tell him because its used for re-entry temps, its the best thermal conductor ever. Then wait and see if he stops appearing on the 'net in any capcaity, after the fool burns his house down.
