Is watercooling just the GPU safe? What about the RAM?
 

I've been harboring this question for some time now...

Is it beneficial to watercool a video card with only a GPU block? What happens to the RAM when the GPU block robs them of their airflow? I've heard that video card manufacturors specifically design the HSF so that the air gets passed over the GPU as well as the RAM.

I can't see video card cooling with only a GPU block as a viable or safe option...

Yes a GPU block will allow you to increase your core clock significantly over the stock cooler. For the ram, most people add ramsinks like the ones from Tweakmonster and have a case fan blowing over the card usually from the side panel. If you have a 6800 a new waterblock is coming out soon which cools both the core and memory.

But that's gotta easily top $100, right? Too bad ramsinks are so permanent... not great for selling off the card later on.

Yeah just attach the ramsinks with thermal tape. Cost is probably about 50 bucks.

Yes, that is true. If you can utilize both watercooler, and airflow setup it would be best. Or if you have good intake and exhaust airflow through your case will also benefit. Ramsinks, like the other members mentioned will help with the memory. Although, some would say ramsinks are just a waste of money.

What type of card is it? My 9800 pro runs just fine with a waterblock and no extra ram cooling, my casae airflow isn't even that great (most stuff is watercooled so I have few fans).

x800 uses DDR2... no need for ram sinks since they run so damn cool. My 9800pro.... defenitly getting ram sinks for them since it hits 70c+ :shrug:

70C on the ram? Er, how? Mine barely tops 35C...

No. X800 uses GDDR3 which run cooler than GDDR and GDDR2. GDDR2 runs much hotter than GDDR.
