Using a car blower?
I'm thinking of using 'blowers" out of a car for running air through a condensor (I know it is phase change, but belive the question is more appropriate here). I'm planning to run it at around 5v. I would just like to know if anyone here has had any experinces with these blowers out of a cars airconditioning unit? The condensor is roughly, 30cm x 30cm.
Would I be better of just going for a 2x120mm fans? Any negative points about blowers? I had the following in mind (please correct me if I'm wrong.) -Power consumption -Noise Thanks in advance |

Works fine but they're usually brushed motors, and any brushless motor would be preferable, for longevity, and lower noise.

Yeah, bigben is working on something with a car blower motor in his setup.
Look for high noise levels and vibration. Also, the blower spins very slow at 5v, maybe it won't even spin at that voltage. You should try it out first before you set it in your case. You'll most likely have to make a shroud for it to direct airflow through the condenser. You can utilize the blower motor resistor found in all vehicles to control the voltage levels also. |
Mine runs just fine at 5 volts. Remember these are commonly undervolted (but don't ask me how).

I'd look into PWM, but you might have to "play" with the frequency to get it to work right.
It's not dead silent. If you can undervolt it enough, you might be able to get it to run really, really quiet. The main difference is that the noise (in my situation) comes mostly fron the wheel chopping through the air, where with an axial fan, I'd be complaining about the noise coming from the motor itself. It's a different kind of noise. A blower here makes a noise at a lower frequency, making it far more tolerable. |
